IN THE NEWS

Tucker Carlson has landed the first interview with Kyle Rittenhouse, following the 18-year-old’s “not guilty” verdict on Friday. Rittenhouse was acquitted of shooting three men during protests in Kenosha, WI last year. A portion of the interview will air on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” tonight, November 22 at 8p on Fox News Channel. There will also be a follow-up “Tucker Carlson Originals” documentary on Fox Nation in December that will include additional portions of the interview as well as behind-the-scenes access to Rittenhouse and his defense team.

All-media investment volume reached a new year-to-date high in October 2021, leading into the holiday push. The market increased +9% vs October 2020 and +11% up October 2019, according to the October 2021 Standard Media Index US Ad Market Tracker. The report does not reflect the total market, nor small and medium businesses that are placing media buys. Among the key takeaways: OOH investment continued to grow, increasing by +60% vs last October. Digital continues to be the only media type to increase vs 2020 and 2019, although year-over-year growth has slowed to +17% for October compared to September’s +28% and August’s +36% growth.

NBC and E! announced that Halle Berry will receive “The People’s Icon” award at the 2021 “People’s Choice Awards.” Berry will be honored for her contributions to television and film, including her directorial debut in the film “Bruised.” Cardi B, who teamed with Berry to executive product the film’s soundtrack, will present the award at the ceremony, which airs Tuesday, December 7 at 9p on NBC and E!.

Nickelodeon, in collaboration with Ty Ty & Jay Brown Productions, has formed new girl group Good NEWZ Girls. Their debut EP, Winter Getaway, is available to stream on all platforms. There are no current plans for Good NEWZ Girls to headline a series for the network.

The TV Academy elected officers and governors for 2022-23. Frank Scherma was re-elected for a second term as Chairman and CEO. Joining Scherma for two-year terms beginning January 1 are Vice Chair Sharon Lieblein (Casting Directors), Second Vice Chari Rickey Minor (Music), Secretary Allison Binder (Professional Representatives) and Treasurer Ann Leslie Uzdavinis (Commercials).

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Let the horror continue. Travel Channel and discovery+ have greenlit second seasons of “The Haunted Mansion” and “Eli Roth Presents: A Ghost Ruined My Life.” Both series debuted on discovery+ in October, during the streamer’s “Ghostober” programming event.

Discovery+ will delve into Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s relationship breakdown in two-part documentary “Johnny vs. Amber.” From All3Media indie Optomen, the doc will present Depp’s side in part one, followed by Heard’s in part two..

Ample Entertainment is aiming to solve the mystery of Jimmy Hoffa’s disappearance. The production company’s filmmakers, Ari Mark and Phil Lott, have exclusive access to Hoffa expert Dan Moldea, and are developing a limited series that tracks the journey to find the notorious mob consort, who vanished in 1975.
Working with producer Beaux Carson, Ample Entertainment’s cameras have been following Moldea’s search to Hoffa, even leading the FBI to a possible unmarked gravesite.

Nikki Glaser is set to host her first comedy special for HBO. The comedian, host and EP of HBO Max reality dating series “Fboy Island” will write, executive produce and perform in the as-yet untitled project. “Nikki is a relentlessly ferocious comedian who takes on taboo topics in the most unassuming and hilarious ways,” said Nina Rosenstein, EVP, HBO Programming. “We loved everything about her ‘Fboy Island’ and are so happy to be doing her first HBO hour.”

BET is moving forward with Jinho “Piper” Ferreira’s pilot script “The Line,” from Mark Gordon Pictures. Inspired by true events, the project centers on Oakland activists Ricky and Angela Roberts, who have been longtime figures in the anti-police movement. However, when a close friend is murdered by police, Rick decides to become a cop and either transform the system or die trying.

CBS is developing workplace comedy “Fulfilled.” The project hails from writer Morgan Lehmann (“Bless This Mess”), Eric and Kim Tannenbaum’s The Tannenbaum Company (“Two and a Half Men”), and Lionsgate TV, where the Tannenbaum Company is under a deal.

Casting Notes: Jackson White (“Mrs. Fletcher”) will play the male lead opposite Grace Van Patten in “Tell Me Lies,” Hulu’s straight-to-series drama based on the Carola Lovering novel… Natasha Liu Bordizzo (“The Society”) has been cast opposite Rosario Dawson in “Star Wars: Ahsoka,” the Disney+ limited series and spinoff of “The Mandalorian.”

COMING UP

ABC and Disney Parks are spreading the holiday cheer with two specials.
Derek Hough, Julianne Hough and Ariana DeBose host “The Wonderful World of Disney: Magical Holiday Celebration” on Sunday, November 28 at 7p. The Hough siblings will also co-host “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Parade” on Saturday, December 25 at 10a.

“A Very Boy Band Holiday” is set at ABC, bowing Monday, December 6 at 8p. The special will feature appearances from members of *NSYNC, New Edition, NKOTB, Boyz II Men, 98 Degrees and O-Town, rocking classic tunes and their groups’ greatest holiday hits.

AccuWeather Network and AccuWeather.com will cover the busy Thanksgiving travel week with live and taped reports from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta, GA, as well as coverage from New Jersey’s Liberty National Airport in Newark. In-studio meteorologists will provide the latest forecasts for regions around the country.

Disney+ documentary “The Rescue” will debut Friday, December 3 in English-speaking territories, followed by a worldwide streaming release in most territories later in the month. From directors and producers E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin and National Geographic Films, the project chronicles the 2018 rescue of 12 boys and their coach from deep inside a flooded cave in Northern Thailand.

Tubi’s premiere of “The Freak Brothers” delivered the platform’s most-watched episode. The streaming service’s first-ever original animated series ranked #1 in total viewing time since it launched on Sunday, November 14. Additionally, it delivered +80% more viewers than the #2 series on the platform.

TCN (The Country Network) has expanded its reach to streaming. The net has launched on the Roku platform.

AMC Networks’ streaming services offer a collection of new films and specials, classics and family favorites for the holidays. Dark holiday feature “Silent Night” debuts Friday, December 3 in theaters and on AMC+, while special “Mary Berry’s Country House Secrets: Mary Berry’s Country House Christmas” bows Monday, December 6, on Acorn TV. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge join forces with Berry with four special visits in “A Berry Royal Christmas,” premiering Monday, December 20. Shudder is delivering holiday scares with “Joe Bob Ruins Christmas,” bowing Friday December 17 at 9p, and original film “The Advent Calendar” on Thursday, December 2.

TECH TALK

The Hulu+ Live TV package will cost $5 more beginning December 21. That increases the price to $70 with the ad-supported tier and $76 with the ad-free Hulu. Subscribers will now have access to Disney+ and ESPN+ at no extra charge. Notifications to subscribers were sent out Friday morning.

SOCIAL GOOD

BET has continued its investment in community recovery and wellness, distributing $100,000 in microgrants to ten Harlem Businesses and non-profits. The move expands on The Apollo and The 125th Street Business Improvement District 2021 Harlem Microgrant program, launched in 2020, with each Harlem business and non-profit receiving $10,000 grants to support their continued recovery from COVID-19, and to honor the entrepreneurial spirt of Soul Train creator Don Cornelius. These efforts lead up to the 2021 “Soul Trains Awards,” taking place at the World Famous Apollo in Harlem and airing Sunday, November 28 at 8p on BET and BET Her.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, NBC 4 New York and Telemundo 47 will match donations made to Tri-State Classroom projects through their Supporting our Schools/Apoyando a Nuestras Escueleas community appeal, hosted in partnership with DonorsChoose. The effort begins today, November 22. Featured projects benefit “Equity Focus Schools” across the Tri-State area, defined on DonorsChoose as “a school where at least 50% of students are Black, Latinx, Native American, Pacific Islander or multiracial, and at least 50% of student quality for free or reduced-price lunch, the standard measure for school economic need.”
