Game on: Richard Plepler is launching a production company to be based at Apple . The former HBO chief, who exited the premium net in February after nearly three decades, was wooed by Apple TV+ heads Jamie Erlicht and Zack Van Amburg to deliver series akin to the dynasty he leaves at HBO, which includes Game of Thrones.
 
Disney+ yesterday experienced a bumpy takeoff of technical issues that included customers being unable to log in to the digital service, use select streaming devices or access specific content—and wait times of more than an hour for some who tried to reach customer service. Nevertheless, Wall Street is keen on the concept, and Disney stock closed up 1.35 percent. 
 
Media mogul Byron Allen’s racial discrimination lawsuit against Comcast Corp. heads to the Supreme Court today (November 13). Allen filed a $20 billion lawsuit in February 2015, arguing that Comcast discriminated against his company Entertainment Studios by refusing to carry its seven lifestyle cable channels. Comcast has maintained the move was purely a business decision.
 
CBS scored rights to air Champions League soccer beginning in 2021, with a package including more than 400 matches a year. All matches will stream live on CBS All Access; select games will air on the CBS broadcast network.
 
In other CBS news, the company’s Q3 revenue of $3.3 billion, up 1 percent YoY, didn’t meet Wall Street expectations of $3.37 billion. Its earnings per share of 95 cents on an adjusted basis slid by analysts’ forecast by just two cents. Adjusted operating income fell 21 percent to $581 million from $736 million for the same period in 2018 resulting from costs related to the Viacom merger and increased spending on programming. Ad revenue slid 5 percent compared with Q3 2018.

The Eshmun Protocol, a conspiracy thriller from Jason Keller, Rina Mimoun, Craig Turk, Dan Lin’s Rideback and CBS TV Studios is in development at CBS. Drama follows a combat engineer who returns home for the funeral of his estranged father and starts unwinding the mystery of his father’s death and secrets of the bio-tech company he inherits.
 
BET Networks announced a season 2 pickup for drama Games People Play. First season followed a desperate basketball wife trying to protect her family, a tenacious journalist struggling to rebuild a tarnished career and a scandalous groupie looking to become a star—who all find it is murder trying to stay on top.
 
Nicole Richie is bringing her Nikki Fre$h rapper alter ego to short-form service Quibi. Richie and Jax Media are developing comedy series Nikki Fre$h, which will deliver socially conscious and educational rhymes. As well as starring, Richie will exec-produce with Michael Baum and Carrie Franklin. Joel & Benji Madden’s MDDN will oversee music.
 
HBO Max is developing Point Fear , a series based on Scholastic’s Point Horror book series by R.L Stine. Based at Picturestart and Lionsgate Television, project is an anthology series that reveals the horrors of being a teenager. Each ep will be inspired by one of the books in the series.
 
British comedian John Bishop is developing a topical entertainment show for ITV. John Bishop At The Weekend will be based at Bishop’s production company, Lola Entertainment, and feature the comedian looking back over the week’s news alongside a spate of guests.
 
Undercover Boss producer Studio Lambert inked a development deal with The Masked Singer showrunner Izzie Pick Ibarra, who will develop and produce new shows with the All3Media-backed production company. Former BBC exec Pick Ibarra has been showrunner on Dancing With The Stars and worked on series including Ladies of London and Breaking Pointe and Skating with the Stars.
 
Production house 41 Entertainment is creating a new version of Roswell Conspiracies , expanding its move into the YA animation space. The Skylanders Academy producer’s eight-part series draws on the 1999 BKN series created by Kaaren Lee Brown and is slated to drop in 2021. It follows secret multinational organization Alliance, which hunts and imprisons menacing extraterrestrials.
 
Serial Box, an audio platform that works with authors to craft original stories for mobile audiences, will see its original serial First Street developed into a TV series by 2929 Entertainment. Drama follows four recent law graduates as they embark as clerks for the US Supreme Court.
 
Order up! Digital platform OUTtvGO signed on to millennial sex comedy Avocado Toast , with production under way for release in Canada, New Zealand, Australia, India and South Africa in 2020. Avocado Toast was created by screenwriters and stars Heidi Lynch and Perrie Voss, and will be directed by Sam Coyle (Hazy Little Thing, Darkside).
 
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
A new season of Craig Ross Jr.’s Monogamy bows today (November 13) on AMC Networks’ UMC streaming service. Series follows four married couples who undergo an unconventional form of therapy that requires them to swap spouses with each other, all with the hopes of reviving their failing relationships.
 
In a deal with All3Media, Ovation acquired nonexclusive US broadcast rights for seasons 7-11 of Midsomer Murders, which bows Thursday, November 14, and seasons 7 and 8 of Travel Man and two seasons of Gordon’s Great Escapes, which both will bow in 2020.
 
On-demand platform CuriosityStream will launch Hi$tory, described as “an irreverent romp behind some of the greatest myths of American history,” on Monday, November 18. Four-part series is hosted by Peter Sagal (NPR’s Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!) and spotlights four defining chapters in American history via the lens of money: Watergate, the Civil War, Transcontinental Railroad and the Cold War.
 
DC Universe dropped a trailer for original series Harley Quinn, which bows on the digital subscription service Friday, November 29. Quinn has finally broken off with the Joker and attempts to make it on her own as the criminal Queenpin of Gotham City in the adult animated action-comedy.
 
IFC will debut Toast of London , one of British comedian Matt Berry’s first series, Wednesday, December 4 at midnight with two eps airing back-to-back weekly. Series is part of the lead-up to new Berry-starring IFC original Year of the Rabbit.
 
New Acorn TV premieres include seasons 1-3 of UK dramedy Mount Pleasant this month, followed by the season 4 debut December 2. Then, season 4 of The Heart Guy (December 9), season 3 of Slings & Arrows (December 16), Italian saga From Father to Daughter (December 23) and a new season of Canadian series Murdoch Mysteries (December 25).
 
Corus Entertainment net Global will debut original medical drama Nurses on Monday, January 6 at 8p. From eOne and ICF Films, coming-of-age series follows five young nurses working on the frontlines of a busy downtown Toronto hospital.
 
Season 3 of Ellen’s Game of Games will premiere on NBC on Tuesday, January 7 with back-to-back eps starting at 8p.
 
Paramount Network dropped a trailer for season 13 of Ink Master: Turf War, which debuts Tuesday, January 7 at 10p. This season, contestants from the East, West, South and Midwest will represent their “turf”; host Dave Navarro and tattoo artists Chris Nunez and Oliver Peck return to the judges table.
 
Second season of WGN America’s comedic procedural series Carter will premiere Monday, January 20 at 10p. Jerry O’Connell. Sydney Poitier Heartsong and Kristian Bruun will all return for season 2; Andy Berman (Psych, Rosewood) joins as the showrunner and exec producer and series creator Garry Campbell returns as an exec producer and writer.
 
Aidy Bryant is back in the second season of Shrill , debuting on Hulu on Friday, January 24. New eight-ep season begins with Bryant’s newly empowered Annie on a high after having just quit her job and locked in boyfriend Ryan. But she quickly realizes it’s not so easy to get what she always imagined she wanted in life.

Will Ferrell will return to Studio 8H for his fifth appearance as host of Saturday Night Live, airing November 23 on NBC. Ferrell was a member of the SNL cast from 1995-2002. King Princess will be musical guest.
 
The 2019 edition of NBC’s annual Christmas in Rockefeller Center will air Wednesday, December 4 at 8p. Special includes performances by Chicago, Brett Eldredge, Derek & Julianne Hough, John Legend, Idina Menzel, Lea Michele, NE-YO, Gwen Stefani and more.
 
Fox is gifting viewers of The Masked Singer with two consecutive nights of a holiday-themed event of its December 18 season finale. The singing competition will air Tuesday, December 10 with six of the remaining masked contestants competing, and then on the following night a second ep will “unwrap” not one, but two masked celebrity singers.

As the holiday shopping season begins, Google is expanding ways it’s helping local stores connect with customers. Among new efforts: Expanding Local Campaigns with new ways for smaller businesses to showcase their locations across Google Maps, the ability for shoppers to explore a curated selection of products a store carries in a visual, catalog-like experience called a local product feed and advancing store pickup visibility.
 
Smart speaker maker Sonos inked a deal with Spotify to stream Spotify’s free tier to its users. Once enabled, Sonos owners can access Spotify’s entire catalog, and can shuffle among songs and access personalized playlists.

Scholastic Entertainment is unleashing the reboot of Clifford the Big Red Dog on Amazon Prime Video on Monday, December 6 and PBS Kids on Tuesday, December 7. The new Clifford remains focused on kindness and empathy, and features a stronger and more independent-minded Emily Elizabeth.
 
Wow! Unlimited Media’s Frederator Studios plans to double its digital library , kicking off with the introduction of 13 new new Wow! Wow! Wubbzy e-books. Library currently comprises nearly 50 titles.
 
Monlove and Warner Bros. Consumer Products announced first dates for live tour Scooby-Doo! and The Lost City of Gold, which kicks off in March 2020.

Discovery Inc. partnered with Vizio subsidiary Inscape , a provider of Smart TV viewing data, to enhance TV measurement across Discovery’s TV footprint in the US. Partnership enables Discovery to use screen-verified, opt-in viewing data from more than 12 million Smart TVs for a variety of measurement and campaign optimization use cases, including enhanced ratings, holistic cross-platform audience insights, and tune-in measurement.
 
PODCAST POSTS
 
The National Lampoon Radio Hour podcast will bow on Thursday, December 19, with guests including Rachel Dratch and Amy Sedaris. The new, 11-ep scripted podcast in partnership with comedy hub Forever Dog Podcast Netwwork builds on a storied history. When National Lampoon first released the National Lampoon Radio Hour in 1973, it broke ground in audio sketch and introduced a cast of fresh young talent including John Belushi, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner and Harold Ramis. National Lampoon will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2020.
 
In more FD news, a new partnership will make available early, ad-free content from the comedy podcast hub’s Q4 slate to premium-tier subscribers of podcasting network Stitcher. FD shows, including Conference Call, F**k Hut Music School for Teens and A Woman’s Smile, will debut on the platform throughout November and December in multi-ep sets rather than via the traditional weekly model.
 
Canadian broadcaster CBC released true crime podcast Hunting Warhead. Six-ep series, a co-production between CBC Podcasts and Norway’s Verdens Gang (VG) newspaper, follows journalists, white-hat hackers and police on a mission across borders to uncover the man behind username Warhead who ran Child’s Play, a site on the dark web with more than 1 million users trafficking child abuse material.

T.R. Knight (Grey’s Anatomy) joins as a series regular in HBO Max’s thriller series The Flight Attendant Ricardo Chavira (Desperate Housewives) and Gabriel Chavarria (The Purge) are set as leads in Netflix’s upcoming Selena: The Series. Also newly cast are include Noemi Gonzalez (The Young and the Restless), Seidy Lopez (Training Day) and newcomer Madison Taylor Baez. Christian Serratos was previously announced to play Selena Quintanilla.

Piers Morgan is getting extra morning half-hour in the UK as British broadcaster ITV’s latest daytime schedule extends the show following the cancellation of The Jeremy Kyle Show.
 
Netflix’s The Devil Next Door got the attention of Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, who penned CEO Reed Hastings asking the him to correct a “mistake” in the doc series. Letter, published on Morawiecki’s official Facebook page, seeks correction of a map used in the series that depicts Nazi concentration camps as located inside modern-day Polish borders.

Awards Gala Taking Place February 6th in NYC
RATINGS
 
The 2019 E! People’s Choice Awards, which aired Sunday, November 10 , reached more than 4.3 million Total Viewers and 1.7 million A18-49 across NBCU cable nets including E!, Bravo, Syfy and USA Network. On E!, telecast was up 41 percent vs. the previous year and averaged 821,000 Total Viewers and 337,000 A18-49, up 12 percent. The growth among total viewers marks the biggest entertainment awards show gain of the year across all of television.
 
Hallmark Channel’s most recent “Countdown to Christmas” original movie premieres, Picture a Perfect Christmas and The Mistletoe Secret, were top performers over the weekend, averaging a 3.0 HH rating, 3.0 million Total Viewers, and 514,000 W25-54.
 
In syndication, Dr Phil (2.6 live plus same day national Nielsen rating, up 4 percent from the week before) hit a new season high for a second straight week in the session ended November 3 despite preemptions in California markets for the fires, which left millions without power. Other talkers moving up included Live with Kelly & Ryan (2.1, up 5 percent), which jumped a hefty 32 percent for its annual Halloween show and matched its season high, and third place Ellen DeGeneres (new season high 2.0, up 11 percent). Top-rated Judge Judy (seven-week high 6.7, up 5%) widened its lead over the field as it blew away all syndicated shows for the 14th consecutive week.
 
The most improved magazines were the recently renewed Extra (1.0, up 25 percent), which made up a ton of ground despite preemptions for the final two games of the World Series and Thursday Night football, and Daily Mail TV (0.9, up 13 percent), which equaled its highest rating of the season. Entertainment Tonight and Inside Edition (both 2.8, steady) continued to lead the category.
 
Week one of a five week tryout that began November 4 for magazine wannabe Central Ave (0.8/2 weighted metered market average) dropped 27 percent from both its lead-ins and year-ago time periods. Among newcomers, leaders The Kelly Clarkson Show (1.4, steady) and Tamron Hall (1.0 steady) both continued add viewers. Among the freshman gavelers, Jerry Springer’s Judge Jerry (0.9, steady) was the high court by far. Personal Injury Court (0.5, unchanged) and Protection Court (0.3, unchanged) followed.
