Overwatch League is getting a shakeup at the top as Activision Blizzard announced that senior business operations manager Sean Miller will take on oversight of the league, which will play next year on an early build of Overwatch 2. Jon Spector, who had been running the league, will take on the role of commercial leader for the overall Overwatch brand. In his announcement tweet, Miller stated that he was looking to make “the 2022 season on [Overwatch 2] the most epic one yet.”
“It is hard to believe that it has been nearly 5 years since I joined Blizzard to help launch the Overwatch League,” Spector wrote in the announcement. “I have had a truly special journey from the day we opened Blizzard Arena in 2017 all the way to watching the Shanghai Dragons complete the ultimate redemption story a few months ago. I feel deeply fortunate to have shared countless, unforgettable experiences with all of you and an incredible group of coworkers, partners, teams and players.”

COMPETITION
The League of Legends 2021 World Championship delivered record numbers for the event, as the eleventh tournament for the sport (not counting data from Chinese streaming services) drew over four million concurrent viewers at peak, with an average number of nearly 1.3 million, up 16.5% over last year’s edition of the series, according to Esports Charts. Overall, viewers spent more than 174.8 million hours watching Worlds 2021, which was broadcast for 134 hours. This is the highest result among all tournaments. Worlds 2021 outpaced Worlds 2020 by almost 25%.
Meanwhile, the return of the PGL Major Stockholm CS:GO Major after a two-year void drew in a high audience of 2,570,144 concurrent viewers, according to Esports Charts, to set a record for the title. Na’Vi made history by being the first CS:GO team to win a Major without dropping a map, and they took home the lion’s share of the $1 million from the prize pool.
BLAST is aligning with Fortnite to produce and deliver this month’s FNCS Grand Royale across the weekends of November 11-14 and 19-21. The FNCS Grand Royale will be the final competition of 2021 and the year’s largest prized Fortnite event, with a share of just over $5 million up for grabs for players around the world. Two additions to the event include the introduction of player cams that will help bring viewers closer to the action, and a live hype show on Nov 19. The Hype Hour Show will host interviews with players, provide analysis from popular casters, and feature important Fortnite Competitive announcements for 2022.

DreamHack is cranking up the experience for Dreamhack Winter, running Nov. 25-28 out of Sweden, offering attendees four days of LAN activities, an expo, and main stage activities, such as music acts. The expo, mainstage and other on-site activities will be housed in the LAN halls, and feature performers that include Loam, DJ Mangoo and Wahlstedt. “DreamHack has always been a place where you can come to connect, explore, win, play, and be yourself — so to be able to offer our first in-person in Sweden, where DreamHack began, means alot to us,” said Marcus Lindmark, President DreamHack, SVP Project and Event Operations at ESL Gaming. “Gaming brought, and kept, us together over the last year and a half, so we know how much our visitors have missed these festivals and the community they offer. Krafton Inc., the holding company for PUBG Studios, announced details for the PUBG Global Championship 2021. The global tournament, set to run from November 19-December 19 will feature 32 of the world’s best PUBG esports teams and a prize pool of $2m (~£1.48m). The event will operate a LAN/online hybrid system hosted in Incheon, South Korea.
The NBA 2K League announced that Mavs Gaming won the NBA 2K League Draft Lottery and will have the first overall pick in the 2022 NBA 2K League Draft. Cavs Legion GC will have the second overall pick, and Bucks Gaming will have the third overall pick. The date of the 2022 NBA 2K League Draft will be announced at a later date.
GCN and Van Wagner unlocked plans for the second-ever Collegiate Esports Invitational Featuring Valorant, launching Nov. 13 with the top eight teams moving on to the quarterfinals on November 20. The championship rounds will begin on November 21 and will be streamed live on twitch.tv/CollegiateEsportsInv. The event is free to enter and open to all students from the 110 colleges and universities across the nation in the America East Conference, Big South Conference, Big West Conference, Colonial Athletic Association, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Southland Conference, Sun Belt Conference, West Coast Conference, Western Athletic Conference and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

Nerd Street Gamers revealed the completion of their new campus in Philadelphia, titled The Block, where the company will now claim as headquarters. The facility includes Localhost, the company’s dedicated esports arena, which will host esports events and be open to the public. “The future of esports depends on providing more gamers with affordable access to the expensive equipment required to compete,” said John Fazio, CEO of Nerd Street Gamers. “Sports and competition are a primary pathway to success for young kids, but unfortunately esports is inaccessible to most because of the high cost of equipment.
