IN THE NEWS
Paramount has shifted VH1 to its BET Media Group, under the stewardship of BET President/CEO Scott Mills. Since its launch in 1985 as a music video channel, VH1 had been a sibling to MTV. “This strategic realignment will ensure that VH1 – a leader in multi-cultural programming and the second largest U.S. cable network for Black viewership – is best positioned for futures success as a key part of the powerful BET ecosystem,” wrote Paramount President/CEO Bob Bakish in a memo to staff.
The season two premiere of “Abbott Elementary” ranks as ABC’s highest-rated comedy telecast since April 2020. With 35 days of multiplatform viewing, the episode has risen to a 4.12 rating among A18-49 and 10.4 million viewers across platforms, up 44% from the comedy’s season one launch.
Fox News Channel reports its midterm election primetime coverage on Tuesday delivered 7.42 viewers, making it the highest-rated election night coverage in all of television in total viewers. MSNBC was second in cable news with 3.1 million viewers, while CNN counted 2.47 million. In broadcast, NBC had 3.09 million viewers, versus 3.03 million for ABC and 2.5 million for CBS.
Netflix has canceled freshman series “Partner Track” and “The Imperfects.” “Partner Track” peaked at #4 on Netflix’s weekly top ten list, while “The Imperfects opened at #3 but slid down the chart.
Local advertising will reach $120.7 billion this year and $121.5 billion in 2023, projects Borrell Associates. Digital ad spend is forecast to grow 5.2% next year, while print, broadcast, outdoor and cable are looking at a drop of 6.5%. But specifics are a challenge to gauge. “The source of local advertising is local business, and we’re seeing a dramatically different profile cause by businesses that collapsed or shrank, and by a record influx of new businesses that replaced them,” said Corey Elliott, EVP for local market intelligence. “Anybody trying to forecast 2023 based solely on past trends is going to have a tough time.”
Jamie Strayer, first-time producer of “Opportunity Knock$,” a not-for-profit TV series that uses technology to help Americans overcome the practical and mental elements of debt, explains how – and why – her show keeps it real, in Cynsiders.

SPORTS
Clinch announced its next Sports API. The enhanced platform will offer more personalized options to connect advertisers with sports fans, coinciding with the 2022 World Series and World Cup, and 2023 American Football Playoffs and March Madness. Said Oz Etzioni, CEO of Clinch, “It’s not enough to just have an omnichannel campaign strategy; you need to connect with fans on a deeper level to show that, as a brand, you truly understand how important a particular sport, team, or venue is to their identity, and how that translates to the products and services they’re most likely to buy.”
The BBC and ITV will share rights to the next two Uefa men’s European Championships. The two networks will split the rights equally, with matches divided between the broadcasters, and the final aired on both broadcasters. The deal has been signed ahead of this year’s World Cup in Qatar, which ITV and the BBC will also share.
CASTING
HBO and A24 have secured the cast for “The Sympathizer” with Robert Downey Jr. Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le and Alan Trong will star as series regulars in the drama series adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning thriller.
Steve Burton will reprise his role on Peacock soap opera “Days of Our Lives.” Burton will play Harris Michaels on the show where he made his daytime television debut in 1988.
