10/26/15: Vice to launch TV channels in the U.S. and throughout Europe; Twitter launches Promoted Moments; ESPN forced to remove its YouTube videos

You didn’t really think the digital space could contain the Vice juggernaut, did you? CEO Shane Smith told CNBC and the Guardian that the media company will be launching a TV channel in the U.S., as well as a dozen throughout Europe, within the next 12-18 months. Smith wouldn’t say who Vice’s U.S. media partner would be, though as early as April some outlets reported that said partner would be A&E Networks. As for European partners, Smith says that Vice is in talks with Netflix, ITV, Discovery, Sky, and others. (“There’s a bit of a bidding war going on,” he told the Guardian, presumably while high-fiving his colleagues.) Vice already has one TV channel, in Canada, through a deal with Rogers Communications.
Thanks to YouTube Red, ESPN has gone pitch black. The Disney-owned sports net has pulled all 798 of its videos from its YouTube channel. Here’s why: The Google-owned video platform is forcing all content creators to sign onto YouTube Red, its new paid subscription service. And while all of Disney’s other properties have done so, ESPN can’t, since it has numerous preexisting distribution deals in place with other platforms. ESPN has 13 YouTube channels, and only 2 – X-Games and Nacion ESPN – remain unaffected on YouTube. The rest, including Grantland, have gone either completely or mostly dark. (First Take, for some reason, still has three of its 51 videos up. So at least there’s that.)
Well, that only took a moment. Twitter has already monetized Moments, its barely two-week old curated content feature. Just like Moments of the un-sponsored variety, Twitter’s new native ad format Promoted Moments consists of an aggregation of tweets centering on a certain topic or event, heavily employing photos and auto-play videos. (Promoted moments are clearly marked as ads.) Twitter told Bloomberg that it plans to debut one new Promoted Moment each day. Yesterday, the upcoming Rocky sequel Creed became the first brand to make use of the feature.

Does the U.K. even have badlands? Well, it does now. Amazon has acquired exclusive U.K. streaming rights for the AMC martial arts series Into the Badlands. It secured the rights from Entertainment One, which owns the U.K. rights to the series. Starting November 17, each episode will be available on a weekly basis to U.K. Amazon Prime members, debuting following their U.S. airings. 
American Girl has partnered with production company Driver Digital to launch AG Life, a new YouTube series. Hosted by five girls who discuss various aspects of girls’ everyday lives, the show premiered on the American Girl YouTube channel Friday. A new episode will debut on the channel weekly. The series will also be promoted on all of American Girl’s social and digital channels.
If you don’t catch Star Wars in theaters this December, you can always head up north. Netflix Canada has secured the 2016 streaming rights to Star Wars: The Force Awakens – the only territory where the streaming service has done so. In the U.S., a prior home distribution deal between Disney and Starz precludes any such arrangement with Netflix.


The Cartoon Network series Teen Titans Go! is making use of Comcast/Xfinity’s new remote, which enables voice commands. On the Teen Titans Go! homepage, users can now elicit responses from the show’s characters by speaking various commands. The feature will be active until December 22.

Breaking Bread with Brooke Burke, a food-centric lifestyle series starring the titular Dancing with the Stars personality, debuted Friday on the SVOD service Feeln. The first episode is available free to the public, and the second is available to Feeln subscribers. New episodes will be made available weekly.

For the first time ever, the NFL partnered with an ad sponsor on Snapchat – and the league decided to go bite-sized. Three Skittles ads, created specifically for Snapchat’s vertical video format, ran during the Live Story of last Thursday’s game between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers. The ads, which depicted a football game played between teams of Skittles candies, appeared between the videos shared by fans present in the stadium. The ads were 10 seconds in length – roughly twice as long as the 49ers’ total time of possession. 


Starz Play, Starz’s SVOD network, has launched on several Android-powered devices, including the Google Nexus Player, Sony Smart TVs, and Shield Android TVs. The service, available only to Starz premium subscribers, is already available on Samsung Smart TVs, Roku devices, Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick, Chromecast, and Xbox, as well tablets and desktop.


has launched its TV Everywhere App, WATCH FUSION, on Sony Smart TVs. The app offers a live stream of Fusion programming, as well as on demand content. WATCH FUSION is available to most customers who subscribe to Fusion through a satellite or cable provider. The app launched on Roku in August.



An old urban legend posits that Andy Kaufman faked his death. Next year, you might just believe it’s true. Tech firm Hologram USA has partnered with CMG Worldwide (a firm that manages the estates of numerous deceased celebrities) to recreate classic performances from Kaufman and fellow comedic legend Red FoxxFilmOn Studios – owned by Alkiviades “Alki” David, who also owns Hologram USA – will work with CMG to help create the shows. No specific performance venues or dates have been announced, though some Hologram USA productions will air on TV in partnership with Endemol Shine Group and stream live on FilmOn.com.


According to a new study from online security firm Distil Networks, fraudulent ad schemes using bots now account for 22.7% of all Web traffic. More troubling for advertisers: When it comes to online publisher traffic, that number rises to 32%. The study also found that 75% of publishers and 59% of advertisers either can’t (or don’t know how to) distinguish human from non-human traffic. The study’s small sample size should be noted; Distil surveyed 138 publishers and advertisers.


United Talent Agency (UTA) has tapped David Anderson to serve as an executive in its Digital Media department. He’ll be tasked with matching consumer brands to UTA clients and increasing UTA’s roster of corporate clients. Previously, Anderson served as Senior Vice President at MediaLink
Delia Rodriguez has joined Univision Digital as Deputy Managing Editor for Audience Engagement. She will help oversee Univision Digital’s editorial strategy to drive audience engagement. Rodriguez will report to Borja Echevarria, VP of Digital.
