IN THE NEWS
Fallout from allegations of sexual harassment, and worse, in the media industry continues unabated.
A spokesman for former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly slammed a New York Times article that appeared Saturday. The Times “printed leaked information provided by anonymous sources that is out of context, false, defamatory, and obviously designed to embarrass Bill O’Reilly and to keep him from competing in the marketplace,” said Mark Fabiani. The Times reported that the month after O’Reilly struck a $32 million agreement with a longtime network analyst to settle sexual harassment allegations, Fox News gave him a 4-year contract extension.
Fox News parent 21st Century Fox responded to Times the story as well, saying O’Reilly’s new contract was made at a time typical for renewals, and “added protections for the company specifically aimed at harassment, including that Mr. O’Reilly could be dismissed if the company was made aware of other allegations or if additional relevant information was obtained in a company investigation.” Fox News exercised that clause in April.
As for the Times, editor Dean Baquet said, “Mr. Fabiani addresses everything but what the story actually says. This article, like our previous reporting on the subject, is accurate and deeply reported and we welcome any challenge to the facts.”
The Television Academy voted “overwhelmingly” to initiate disciplinary hearings against Harvey Weinstein in the wake of the dozens of sexual harassment and assault allegations against him. The Producers Guild, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and BAFTA have already taken action to rid themselves of the disgraced producer. “Sexual harassment in any form is abhorrent and totally unacceptable. Television is a collaborative industry and we fully support those who have been affected by these allegations,” said the Academy in a statement. A hearing has been set, per the group’s bylaws, for early November.
The Director’s Guild of America has also started disciplinary proceedings against Weinstein. “The DGA has a long-standing practice of not commenting on internal union matters,” said guild president Thomas Schlamme on Saturday, “but has decided to make an exception in this case to acknowledge the filing of charges.”
An open letter to the animation community, with 217 signatures from women and non-conforming people, demanded “clearly and enforced sexual harassment” policies, as well as punishment for offenders. The letter went to execs at Disney, Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon and Warner Bros., among others. “When sexual predators are caught at one workplace, they seem to easily find a job at another studio, sometimes even following their victims from job to job,” said the letter. “We are tired of relying on whisper networks to know who isn’t safe to meet with alone.”
Shonda Rhimes may be gone from ABC after signing overall deal with Netflix, but she’s not forgotten. Or even really gone. Speaking at USC’s Institute on Entertainment Law and Business, Disney/ABC TV president Ben Sherwood said, “ABC will always be Shonda’s broadcast home. In fact, she’s told me, told colleagues, she hopes Grey’s Anatomy runs as long as General Hospital does – for another 40 years and beyond.”
Responding to online speculation about why she left Chicago P.D. after 4 seasons (“it sounded like they cut her not she cut them,” read one post), Sophia Bush posted, “took me a long time and a lot of hard work to get out of that show…I left because I wanted to. End of story.” Bush now has a talent holding and development deal with 20th Century Fox Television.
Dr. Jennifer Ashton has been upped to Chief Medical Correspondent for ABC News. Ashton, who was most recently Chief Women’s Health Correspondent, fills the shoes of ABC News Chief Health and Medical Editor, who announced he was leaving to become president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
The Scripps Howard Foundation is launching a year-long postgraduate fellowship program for four people aiming for journalism leadership positions in the media industry. The program is offered in partnership with the Scripps News Washington Bureau, Newsy and ProPublica. In addition to immersive newsroom residencies, participants will convene for a series of workshops on leadership, project management, innovation and the business of journalism.
Fox Sports is dropping the mic for the World Series – and dropping it deep. Fox is placing 14 underground microphones around the paying field, and will use 8 motion cameras. At-bats and close plays will be captured at 1500 frames per second.
