Simon Cowell is heading back to the judges panel, this time on NBC’s America’s Got Talent – a format he created. “Simon knows this format better than anyone and he’s been producing the show with us since the beginning, so we’re thrilled to have him to step in front of the camera and take his rightful place at the head of the judges’ panel,” said Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.Cowell replaces Howard Stern for the 11th season; Stern left after a four-season stint.
Diminished immigration from Spanish-speaking countries has had an effect on Spanish-language television in the U.S., Telemundo president Luis Silberwasser said yesterday at the Hispanic Television Summit in NY. Although there has been a shift, “it has opened also the door, for the number of bilinguals are growing,” he said. “So for us, it’s an opportunity.”
The Whispers apparently was just not loud enough for ABC. After speculation, the network officially opted not to pick up the summer series for a second season. The alien drama series became the network’s highest-rated summer scripted premiere since 2010’s Rookie Blue in 2010, but ratings began to decline shortly after. The Whispers was created by Soo Hugh, and exec-produced by Steven Spielberg among others.
A+E Networks and iHeartMedia will present Shining a Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America (wt) on Friday, November 20, at 8p. The concert – featuring Zac Brown Band, Eric Church, Jamie Foxx, John Legend, Miguel, Pink, Ed Sheeran, Sia, Bruce Springsteen, Pharrell Williams and more – will be recorded at The Shrine Auditorium in LA on Wednesday, November 18. The two-hour special event will air across the entire A+E Networks portfolio and on iHeartMedia broadcast radio stations and the iHeartRadio digital platform. The concert will kick off A+E Nets’ campaign to confront issues of race and promote unity. Immediately following the concert at 10p, A&E will air one-hour special Shining a Light: Conversations on Race in America (wt).
John Malone’s Liberty Global is in talks to acquire Cable & Wireless Communications in a deal that could be valued at more than $5 billion. If a deal is reached, Liberty would gain reach into the Caribbean and Panama.

The team behind feature film The Interview – writer Dan Sterling and directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg – are reuniting for a politically tinged workplace TV comedy. The trio’s Citizen Floyd landed at Fox with a put pilot commitment. 20th Century Fox Television (home of Sterling’s overall deal) is the studio.
Shondaland is developing another project for ABC. The network snagged rights to Romeo and Juliet epilogue Still Star-Crossed, from writer/exec producer Heather Mitchell (Scandal). The action follows the rift between the Capulets and the Montagues in the wake of their children’s deaths. Mitchell executive produces with Shondaland’s Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, along with Michael R. Goldstein.
Elizabeth Banks will make her Saturday Night Live hosting debut on November 14. Disclosure will also make their SNL bow as musical guest that night; the English electronic music duo will be joined by Sam Smith and then Lorde for their first TV performance from their album.

Taking the live television event to paranormal places, Destination America will air Exorcism: Live! on Friday, October 30, at 9p. Sixty-six years later, the group will attempt the first-ever live televised exorcism.
Starz is set to stage its first worldwide same-day premiere for original series Ash vs Evil Dead, based on the classic Evil Dead horror films. The company sealed agreements with broadcasters and digital platforms representing more than 100 countries and territories for the October 31 launch.

TV One is bringing the romance with the premiere of original movie Stock Option on Saturday, November 7, at 8p. The story centers around a homeless former stockbroker who life takes a big turn after he rescues a model from an attempted attack.
Instructions Not Included (No Se Aceptan Devoluciones), the highest-grossing Spanish-language film ever released in the U.S., will premiere on Spanish-language network Cinelatino on Sunday, October 25, with back-to-back showings at 9p and 11p. Cinelatino has exclusive U.S. Spanish-language pay-tv rights.
As part of ABC Family’s 13 Nights of Halloween programming event, the network will air exclusive interstitials from Monday, October 26-Friday, October 30 featuring Demi Lovato performing her new single “Confident.”

But wait… there’s more. Caitlin Jenner will continue to find her “new normal” on a newly OK’d second season of I Am Cait on E! The Season 1 premiere ranked as the most-watched unscripted series launch among A18-49 across all cable for 2015 with 2.3 million viewers in the demo, and was the biggest launch in over a decade in the demo for E!.
Bravo will premiere the second season of Untying the Knot on Sunday, November 8, at 10p. Celebrity divorce attorney and expert mediator Vikki Ziegler will return to help couples “divorce with dignity” through mediation. This season, the eight episode series expands to an hour-long format.
The Browns are back. Discovery is returning the series Alaskan Bush People on November 11 at 9p. With close to 5 million viewers per episode last season, the show was the No. 1 original series on all of television on Friday nights across A25-54, M25-54, A18-49, and M18-49.
Small-town living continues for the Rose family in the season two premiere of Schitt’s Creek, Wednesday, March 16, at 8p on Pop. The half-hour scripted comedy, starring Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara and Chris Elliott, will return with two back-to-back new episodes on its season two premiere night.
Talk about a solid lead-in: CNBC today announced a special early premiere for the network’s hit series The Profit. The all-new extended episode will debut with limited commercial interruption on Wednesday, October 28th following the net’s telecast of the Republican Presidential debate. The premiere will also air as originally announced on its regular day and time beginning Tuesday, November 3 at 10p.
Tony winner Nikki M. James (Book of Mormon) joined the cast of CBS’s BrainDead, a new comic-thriller set in the world of Washington, D.C. politics, to be broadcast in summer 2016. The series comes from Robert and Michelle King, creators and exec producers of The Good Wife.
Joey Lauren Adams will star opposite Billy Ray Cyrus in CMT’s upcoming comedy Still The King. The show is about a washed-up one-hit wonder who, after being booted out of country music, emerges 20 years later as an Elvis impersonator.
Production is underway for a premiere in 2016.
Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) nabbed a recurring role in Epix original series Graves, opposite Nick Nolte and Sela Ward. The political satire, about a former President determined to right all the wrongs he wrought while in office, is produced by Lionsgate.
David Marciano (The Shield) joined USA Network drama pilot Shooter in a recurring role opposite Ryan Phillippe and Emily Rios. The show follows a former Marine sniper who reemerges to help thwart a Presidential assassination and is framed for the attempt.
Sesame Street is adding an autistic Muppet, Julia, to the neighborhood, and launching new initiative Sesame Street and Autism: See Amazing in All Children. The initiative aims to quash the stigma of autism and includes a free app with materials for providers, organizations and caregivers.
Entertainment Studios purchased indie film distributor Freestyle Releasing for an undisclosed price. Entertainment Studios owns eight 24-hour HD cable networks, including Pets.TV,Comedy.TV and Recipe.TV, and produces and sells advertising for almost 40 television programs.

After three weeks of ratings declines, Fox’s Empire came back with one tenth rise in A18-49 last night, according to Nielsen data, its first uptick of the second season. Audience-wise, Empire is dead even with last week’s 12.2 million viewers.
TBS’s exclusive presentation of the National League throughout the MLB Postseason – Wild Card, Division Series and League Championship Series – averaged 6.3 million total viewers and a 3.9 US HH rating for 14 game telecasts to deliver the network’s most-viewed postseason coverage of all time, according to Nielsen fast nationals. This year’s MLB Postseason on TBS is up 48 percent in total viewers and 44 percent in HH ratings over the network’s postseason telecasts in 2014.
Through six weeks of the 2015 NFL regular-season, The NFL on CBS is averaging 18.9 million total viewers, up 6 percent from last year’s 17.8 million viewers. This year’s audience is the largest for the first six weeks of the season for the AFC television package in 29 years.
Season 3 of Bounce TV original series Family Time has grown in audience for the third consecutive week. The third ep in the season’s Tuesday telecast was the show’s most-watched ever among HH (264,000) and total viewers (445,000).
Fox Business’ Varney & Co eked out its first viewer and demo win over CNBC’s Squawk Alley on Tuesday, averaging 192,000 viewers in the 11a hour versus 176,000 for Squawk, and 24,000 among A25-54, versus 23,000 for CNBC.
Food Network’s Worst Cooks in America: Celebrity Edition on Wednesday delivered a .8 rating (750K imp) A25-54, up 28 percent versus year-ago and ranking 3rd in the 9p timeslot among cable. In A25,-34, the show earned a .8 rating (250K imp), up 59 percent and ranking 2nd in demo and timeslot.
