CYNOPSISDIGITAL
10.22.15 Good morning. It’s Thursday October 22, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
YouTube’s subscription service is coming, and soon. Dubbed YouTube Red, it will feature several original series, which will begin rolling out early next year. Those include Scare PewDiePie, a reality series starring Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg, and Lazer Team, a feature-length action comedy from Fullscreen Films and Rooster Teeth. YouTube Red will also allow users to download videos and watch them offline. And the service includes a redesigned version of YouTube Music with improved discovery tools. Priced at $9.99 a month – the same as Netflix – YouTube Red debuts exclusively in the U.S. on October 28, along with a one-month free trial offer. The service will debut in markets outside the U.S. in 2016.
And to think, community college is supposed to be relatively inexpensive. Yahoo announced that its recent foray into big-budget original programming (namely, Community, Sin City Saints, and Other Space) has proven anything but lucrative. The company wrote off the cost of the three shows, taking a $41.7 million charge in Q3. “[W]e couldn’t see a way to make money [from original video] over time,” said Yahoo CFO Ken Goldman in a Q3 earnings call. “We’re not saying we’re not going to do these at all in the future. But…in three cases at least, it didn’t work the way we had hoped…and we’ve decided to move on.”
Yahoo also announced that it has signed a three-year search advertising pact with Google. The deal builds on Yahoo’s existing partnership with Microsoft, wherein Yahoo gets a percentage of revenue from ads displayed on its sites.
To The U.K…and beyond!!! Next month, Disney will launch DisneyLife, an online SVOD service available exclusively in the U.K. The service will feature Disney movies, TV series, music, and books. That includes Pixar’s entire catalogue, and classics such as Snow White and The Jungle Book. Disney also plans to launch in France, Spain, Italy, and Germany next year, though there are currently no plans to launch in the U.S.
This might be the first and last time you see Fargo and Batman and Robin mentioned in the same sentence: Those films, along with several others, are saying goodbye to Netflix come November 1. Other films getting slashed from the service include Scream and Saw. Meanwhile, Netflix will be adding new films to its service throughout November, including The SpongeBob Squarepants Movie and Anna Karenina.
Cinehost, a company specializing in building video-on-demand platforms for broadcasters and brands, has now launched a direct-to-consumer VOD platform. The platform enables creators to customize their own VOD stores, without having to go through a major consumer platform as an intermediary.
On Tuesday, production studio The Uprising Creative announced it is launching VEHICLEvr, a virtual reality content studio. VEHICLE will specialize in the production and direction of branded and original VR content. It will also provide production services to partner companies working in VR. Uprising co-founder Jeff Nicholas will serve as VEHICLE’s Managing Director and Head of Development. Uprising has previously worked on VR projects with multiple partners, including CBS Interactive.

Other YouTubers featured in the film will include Tyler Oakley, Joe Sugg, Laci Green, Ingrid Nilsen, Marcus Butler, and Alfie Deyes. The documentary will air later this year, though no date has been announced.
Content distributor The Orchard has reached a deal Nitro Circus, an extreme sports entertainment company helmed by filmmaker and former X-games star Travis Pastrana. The Orchard will distribute all of Nitro’s existing films, as well as its upcoming releases. Action Figures, Pastrana’s directorial debut, was the first new film to be released through the deal; it debuted yesterday along with the eight films in Nitro’s back catalogue. All of the films will be available on digital platforms such as iTunes, Vimeo On Demand, Google Play, Amazon, XBox and Vudu.

This week, Nielsen gave Adweek a look at its upcoming Total Audience Measurement service. (Yes, it really is coming.) The platform will account for all viewing across linear TV, DVR, VOD, connected TV devices, mobile, PC and tablets and roll out late in the first quarter of 2016, though Nielsen will begin to share its data with clients this December, allowing them access to the tool. Among other features, the tool will allow users to track overall performance within a selected date range, and can remove duplicate views by the same person on different platforms, revealing the total unduplicated audience. Details are here.

On August 27, Three Vice Media journalists were arrested on false charges in Turkey. Two were ultimately released, but one, Mohammed Ismael Rasool, still languishes in Turkish custody. Yesterday, Vice staged a two hour worldwide blackout of all its social media channels and homepages in support of Rasool. The company has also released a YouTube video about Rasool, and it’s very much worth watching. Check it out here.
