PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Big Law, based on the Colombian format from RCN, is in development at ABC. From Ellen Pompeo‘s studio-based production company, Calamity Jane, David Marshall Grant and ABC Studios, the project is written and exec-produced by Grant and is a modern look at an LA law firm and what it takes to survive and thrive.

An untitled comedy from The Real O’Neals co-creators Casey Johnson and David Windsor, and ABC Studios is also in development at ABC. The project, written and exec-produced by Johnson and Windsor, involves a woman who, at her tipping point, discovers something extraordinary about herself.

Lionsgate signed an overall deal with David Shumsky, co-creator of YouTube series Kevin Hart: What the Fit. Shumsky is set to create original nonfiction programming for TV and digital platforms through his Shumsky Productions. Lionsgate will have exclusive rights to alternative and unscripted content produced by Shumsky Productions, including the new Hart fitness show.

Drama series Tapped is go at Freeform. The project comes from Paul Wesley, former star of The Vampire Diaries, and Pretty Little Liars developer-showrunner I. Marlene King. It’s written by Thomas Brandon and based on the unpublished memoir by Andrew Shaffer, How To Survive A Sharknado.

Weekends with Yankee, the public television travel and lifestyle series featuring New England, has been tapped for a second season set to air in spring 2018. WGBH Boston and Yankee magazine are re-teaming for 13 half-hour episodes that will explore more of the hidden gems and landscapes of New England. Emmy-winning explorer Richard Wiese returns as series co-host together with Yankee senior food editor Amy Traverso.

Suzanne Martin and Sean Hayes are reteaming for half-hour comedy series Like Family, set up at NBC. Universal TV, where Hayes’ Hazy Mills production shingle hangs, is the studio. Project centers on two twentysomething friends who met as foster children.

American Greetings Entertainment, in conjunction with Dentsu and OLM, have begun production of Tinpo, 78 seven-minute CGI episodes of a fantasy/construction kids series expected to debut in late 2018 in the UK and elsewhere around the world.

Lots of great insights during yesterday’s Cynopsis webinar, “Harnessing the Power of the Evolving Hispanic Webinar.” Adriana Waterston set the table with new research from Horowitz, including evidence that pay TV “is alive and kicking” for Hispanics. El Rey‘s Alma Derricks described the “El Rey lens” as programming that’s entertaining, aspirational, authentic and has grit. Derricks pointed to Rocky as a great example – just because the film doesn’t have a Latino star doesn’t mean it’s not a fit for the network. Dr. Jake Beniflah from mitu explained the science of in-culture marketing – how advertising for Latinos is more effective than it is with other groups if their culture is recognized. Discovery Comm.‘s David Tardio noted that Hispanics today are less focused on gaining the tools necessary to acculturate, but want content that informs and entertains. And NBCUniversal‘s Luis Romero tormented the audience with a photo of salsa and fries (it was lunchtime), then walked us through the “superfan cycle” that is driving live viewership and engagement at Telemundo. To register for the info-packed webinar on demand, go here.

All together now: Azteca America has partnered with “Somos Una Voz” to air the One Voice: Somos Live! A Concert for Disaster Relief telethon, tomorrow, October 14 at 8p. The star-studded event, hosted by Jennifer Lopez, Marc Anthony and Alex Rodriguez, will also be simulcast on Telemundo and Univision.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

E!’s peek into the lives of a group of women whose significant others are music-makers including Nelly and Eric Bellinger debuts this Sunday, October 15 at 10p. Docu-series The Platinum Life follows Asiah Collins, Alycia Bella, La’Myia Good and others.

Bushido Battleground, the 20-episode one-hour series showcasing elite fighters in Mixed Martial Arts, submission Jiu Jitsu, full-contact Kick Boxing and Muay Thai, will debut on El Rey Network on October 18 at 10p.

Cooking Channel is celebrating the season with a new series and season. Extreme Cake Makers premieres Friday, November 10 at 11p, while Patti LaBelle welcomes her friends into her home on a new season of Patti LaBelle’s Place, debuting Sunday, November 26 at 11a.

Premiering on Smithsonian Channel this Sunday, October 15 at 8p and 9p, respectively, are the ninth season of Air Disasters and new series Make It Out Alive. Of the latter, John Cavanagh, exec producer, Smithsonian Channel, tells Cynopsis, “It’s incredible to work on a series like Make It Out Alive. Everyday people caught in the middle of unfolding disaster – the drama is all there already. You just let people tell their stories,” he says. “What we did want to do a little differently with this series was put viewers in the shoes of those people as it happened – to be there in the wrong place at the wrong time when disaster strikes. Suddenly, you find yourself facing along with them the split-second decisions that make the difference between life and death wondering if, or how, they are going to make it out alive. For me, it’s the way these individual stories–emotional, harrowing, heroic, and sometimes tragic–are cast against the epic backdrop of these huge disasters that makes the series so compelling.”

National Geographic’s eight-part global event series The Long Road Home, a gripping look at the toll war takes on soldiers and their families, will debut with a two-hour premiere Tuesday, November 7 at 9p. The series moves to its regular date and time of Tuesdays at 10p beginning November 14. Series is based on the New York Times best-selling book by Martha Raddatz that details “Black Sunday,” when a small platoon of soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division was ambushed in Sadr City, Baghdad, in 2004. Radditz talked to Cynopsis about the series here.

ABC’s decorating competition series The Great Christmas Light Fight returns Monday, December 4 at 8p. Season 5 showcases more OTT Christmas displays, as four families compete to win the coveted Light Fight trophy and a $50,000 prize.
