CBS Television Studios formed a new unscripted programming department with veteran reality programming producer/executive Ghen Maynard overseeing in the newly created position of senior EVP, alternative programming. The appointment marks a return to CBS for Maynard, who developed and launched Survivor, the U.S. version of Big Brother, The Amazing Race and America’s Next Top Model at the network. Recently, Maynard independently sold, produced pilots and series, and/or consulted on projects at several networks and production companies, including AMC, CBS, The CW, TNT and UP.
ION Television is launching a new graphics package including a new logo to accompany its established “Positively Entertaining” tagline. The launch coincides with ION’s fall programming debut, which kicks off this week with new seasons of Criminal Minds, Blue Bloods and Law & Order: SVU and the season 4 premiere of original series Saving Hope.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is building the team behind his Rock the Troops holiday event special. Johnson and his Seven Buck Productions is partnering with Spike TV, Casey Patterson Entertainment and Don Mischer Productions to create a music and entertainment experience created to honor, inspire and captivate the men and women of America’s Armed Services. Event will feature appearances by Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key and Rob Riggle; musical performances including Nick Jonas, Flo Rida, Tenacious D, Lynyrd Skynyrd; and stand-up performances from Jeff Ross and J.B. Smoove, among others. The special will air in December on Spike.
Veteran marketing executive Peter Martin, formerly of Fox and Disney, launched Burbank-based Flex Creative, a creative services agency specializing in promotional and in-show content across television, streaming and other platforms. Client roster includes 20th Television, Disney and Scripps Networks Interactive.
In the largest civil penalty the FCC has ever assessed a cable operator to resolve an agency investigation into charges for services and equipment that consumers did not request, Comcast will pay a $2.3 million fine, and implement a five-year plan to end what the FCC says was “negative option billing,” which placed the burden on subscribers to opt out when Comcast charged them for premium channels, set-top boxes, or DVRs they didn’t order. Comcast says its billing procedures were “mistakes,” not company policy.

ABC and Mattel Creations are producing a primetime series that brings to life the excitement of the toy invention process. The Toy Box, hosted by Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), will provide designers the opportunity to bring their toy concept to life with Mattel. Series was co-developed with Hudsun Media and Electus, and will premiere during the 2016-17 season on ABC.
NBC ordered six episodes of new half-hour comedy series Common Sense, where real people from all walks of life offer their honest opinions on the week’s news and buzzworthy events – unfiltered and completely real. Each week a cast of reoccurring characters will express their opinions on the most talked about news of that week in the series, produced by Studio Lambert/All3Media and Universal Television Alternative Studio. Exec producers are Stephen Lambert, Tania Alexander, Alex Katz, Greg Lipstone and Greg Goldman.
CBS is developing legal drama Exhibit A, from former Castle co-showrunner Alexi Hawley, Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-0) and Jane The Virgin producer Ben Silverman. Written by Hawley and based on the South Korean series My Lawyer, Mr. Jo, the series centers on a disgraced Korean-American prosecutor who finds redemption as a defense lawyer. Hawley is co-exec producer for Exhibit A, along with Kim through his 3AD banner and Silverman through his company Propagate and Lindsay Goffman.
In more Daniel Dae Kim news, Anonymous Content and Paramount TV are teaming with the actor/producer to adapt Re Jane, based on the Patricia Park novel. The half-hour comedy is housed at TV Land.
Oxygen Media greenlit original docu-comedy series Unprotected, about a family leaving the witness protection program to start a new life; the network also ordered a new season of Bad Girls Club, which pits “bad girls” from the East Coast against their West Coast counterparts. Production is under way for both series and each are set to premiere in 2017.
Destination America is back in production with Pilgrim Media Group on Ghost Brothers, its series that takes a humorous and good-mannered approach to ghost hunting. Series is slated to return in early 2017, again following best buds and budding paranormal enthusiasts Dalen Spratt, Juwan Mass and Marcus Harvey.
Lifetime’s Little Women franchise is expanding as it heads to The Lone Star State with Little Women: Dallas, premiering Wednesday, November 2 at 10p.
History will return new seasons of its series The Curse of Oak Island – the network’s top nonfiction series across all key demographics – and Hunting Hitler its No. 2, on Tuesday, November 15 at 9p and 10p, respectively. Additionally, a one-hour preshow, The Curse of Oak Island: Drilling Down, will serve as a recap of last season and a crash course for new viewers beginning immediately before the premiere at 8p.
Hillary Clinton will sit down with Ellen DeGeneres for DeGeneres’ show Friday, October 14. Clinton’s appearance will be her first interview since Sunday’s second Presidential debate with GOP nominee Donald Trump.
Showtime’s The Circus returns early to the big top this week to cover the fallout from the latest dramatic developments in the Presidential race. The docu-series is cutting its two-week break in half and will air all new episodes on Sundays at 8p through the election.
CMT named Carrie Underwood, Chris Stapleton, Florida Georgia Line, Luke Bryan and Thomas Rhett as the premiere country artists of 2016 to be celebrated at the seventh-annual CMT Artists of the Year special, premiering from Nashville on Thursday, October 20 at 8p.
Disney Channel’s upcoming original TV movie Elena And The Secret Of Avalor premieres Sunday, November 20 at 7p on Disney Channel and Disney Junior with Jane Fonda as the raven-haired evil sorceress Shuriki. The movie tells the back story of the Elena Of Avalor series, and its voice cast also includes Ariel Winter, Sara Ramirez and Chris Parnell, among others.
To mark the 20th anniversary of AMC FearFest which provided a launching pad for The Walking Dead when the show premiered in 2010 – this year will feature more than 400 hours of horror and genre programming, including a full 88-hour six-season catch-up marathon of every episode of The Walking Dead, a new two-hour retrospective special and the season 7 premiere on October 23. Movies to be featured during the promo, which runs Thursday, October 13 through Halloween night, include Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Amityville Horror and The Exorcist.
Destination America’s inaugural Ghostbuster promo, featuring 31 nights of fright all month long, will include eps from season 1 of Ghost Brothers, with features including social media extras and new footage, and more. Series marathons will air Wednesday, October 26 and Wednesday, November 2 from 8-11p.
TV Land has found the leads for its pilot of the rebooted, modern-day Heathers, a dark comedy series based on the 1988 film. Newcomer James Scully and Grace Victoria Cox (Under the Dome) are onboard as the male and female leads, J.D. and Veronica.
Amy Seimetz (The Girlfriend Experience) is in for Showtime’s half-hour comedy pilot Mating (working title), from Jason Katims and Stu Zicherman. She joins series leads Taran Killam and Jim Belushi in the series about a recently divorced guy who married young and now finds himself completely unprepared for the brave new world of dating.
Basketball Hall of Famer and Boston Celtics legend Kevin McHale will return to Turner Sports in a multiyear agreement to provide analysis for NBA TV’s Fan Night, along with select NBA on TNT game telecasts. McHale, who most recently held positions as an NBA front office executive and head coach, previously worked for Turner Sports from 2009-11.
Some shuffling at ESPN. Michael Smith and Jemele Hill, who have led ESPN 2’s weekday His & Hers show for two years, are headed to ESPN as co-anchors on the 6p edition of SportsCenter, per new multiyear contracts. They’ll continue on His & Hers until taking over the new SportsCenter gig on February 6… In related news, Cari Champion, co-anchor of ESPN’s 11a edition of SportsCenter, re-upped her contract in a new multiyear deal to remain on that program and contribute content to espnW, including her podcast Be Honest with Cari Champion.
Digital SVOD service CBS All Access is now available on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation4 console. The service offers two subscription options reduced commercials for $5.99/month and commercial-free for $9.99/month.
Monumental Sports & Entertainment and CSN Mid-Atlantic, part of NBC Sports Group, extended CSN Mid-Atlantic’s exclusive media rights for the NHL’s Washington Capitals and NBA’s Washington Wizards. The extended partnership also includes an investment by NBC Sports Group in Monumental Sports Network, MSE’s digital sports and entertainment platform. The agreement is pending NHL and NBA approval.
Entertainment One’s new 2D-animated comedy series Winston Steinburger and Sir Dudley Ding Dong are headed to TV screens in the UK (POP), Poland (Teletoon), the Middle East (MBC Group) and North Africa (MBC Group) this fall.
Nat Geo People recently acquired Asian territorial rights to select episodes of AIM Tell-A-Vision Group’s production Raw Travel. The series began broadcasting on Nat Geo People in a variety of Asian territories earlier last month. The show recently debuted its fourth season in syndication in 159 US cities representing more than 93 percent of US television households.
Freeform released some key consumer insights on dating and young adults, timed to the premiere of new series Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After?, which premiered last night (October 11) at 8p. Partnering with Kantar Futures on ethnographic interviews with couples and singles in the US, ages 14-34, the network found among results that the online dating game is impacting social interaction, with 36 percent of young adults saying it’s now more acceptable to go on Tinder in a bar than approach someone you find attractive and actually talk to them.

Saturday Night Live hit a 12-year high for a second telecast of the season for its second episode of the season on October 8, featuring host Lin-Manuel Miranda and musical guest Twenty One Pilots. The telecast averaged 7.14 million viewers, Live + SD, the highest for the second SNL of a new fall season since October 9, 2004. It’s also a jump of 1.4 million persons over SNL’s average for original telecasts last October.
Fox’s new series Pitch was up 43 percent in three-day Total Multi-Platform Audience vs. Live+SD (5.0 vs. 3.5 mil P2+), while the network’s Rosewood grew 38 percent in three-day Total Multi-Platform Audience vs. Live+SD (5.1 vs. 3.7 mil P2+) and retained 100 percent of its week two Total Multi-Platform viewership.
In other Fox news, on Sunday, October 2 in L+7, The Simpsons was up 67 percent (3.0/10 L7 vs. 1.8/6) and Son of Zorn was up 36 percent (1.9/6 L7 vs. 1.4/4), the biggest week-over-week increases for any returning or new broadcast entertainment show airing the week of September 26 (in ratings points).
Hallmark Channel’s Fall Harvest programming event continued to deliver strong program performances as the network’s most recent original movie Autumn in the Vineyard became the No. 1 HH rated non-sports cable program of the day on Saturday, October 8. The movie is the second of four new, original weekly movies scheduled during the four-week programming event. According to Nielsen, Hallmark Channel was the top non-sports cable network among HH rating and delivery on Saturday, October 8, in primetime; Autumn in the Vineyard averaged a 2.0 HH rating and 2.2 million Total Viewers.
For the week of September 26, ABC’s Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with Chris Harrison built week to week in Households (up 7 percent), Total Viewers (up 6 percent, for the third straight week) and W25-54 (up 17 percent). On Wednesday, September 28, Millionaire scored its most watched single-day telecast in 10 months.
CBS’ 60 Minutes drew 12.4 million viewers Sunday night to finish the week at No. 5 on Nielsen’s Top 10 List; it’s the second time the news magazine joined the list in three weeks. Sunday’s episode featured a Charlie Rose story on artificial intelligence, Steve Kroft’s profile of actor Bryan Cranston and a Lara Logan report on veterinarians who track and treat gorillas in the wild.
Food Network’s Halloween Baking Championship posted a .7 rating P25-54 (610K impressions), up 61 percent over last season. Overall Monday night, Food Network saw an 87 percent increase versus year-ago and ranked #9 for the night across all ad-supported cable. Sunday night’s Halloween Wars also posted a .7 rating among P25-54.
The third week was a charm for Harry, with a 1.3 Live +3 same day national Nielsen rating, up 8 percent from the prior session. Compared to the already established talk shows, this season’s only nationally ranked first-run newcomer equaled or beat the long-running Rachael Ray (1.3), Steve Wilkos (1.3), Jerry Springer (1.3) and Dr. Oz (1.2).
In other syndication news, Dr. Phil widened its lead over other talkers, growing 10 percent from last year – the biggest annual increase in the genre.
Unimas last week averaged 440,000 Total Viewers 2+, 208,000 A18-49 and 77,000 A18-34 for the entire week during prime.
