Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 9, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Univision is launching its own sports awards show, appropriately dubbed Premios Univision Deportes, set to honor “top athletes and teams from the leagues and sports that Hispanics care about most.” The two-hour event will take place on UniMas and Univision Deportes Network on Dec. 18 at 9p. The honors show will look to celebrate sports figures for their accomplishments on and off the field across multiple sports, including soccer, basketball, baseball, football, boxing, auto racing and more. The show will also include musical performances by top Latin artists and a one hour red carpet pre-show to air on UDN.

ON THE AIR

A pair of series clinching matchups in the NLDS handed FOX Sports 1 with record-setting viewership on Tuesday night. The two games pushed the channel to the top spot among ad supported cable networks in prime time, marks the network’s most-watched total day, its most-watched program and its most-watched non-primetime show. From 8-11p, FOX Sports 1 averaged 3.443 million viewers. Overall, Tuesday ranked as FOX Sports 1’s most-watched day with an average of 1.171 million viewers from 3-3a. Game 4 of the Dodgers/Cardinals contest drew an audience of 3.267 million viewers, setting a new record as FOX Sports 1’s most-watched non-primetime program. Meanwhile, the Nationals/Giants NLDS Game 4 delivered 3.921 million viewers, eclipsing the channel’s four day old audience record of 3.595 million viewers initially set Friday for Dodgers/Cardinals NLDS Game 1.

TBS announced plans for the American League Championship Series between the Royals and Orioles, which begins tomorrow at 8p with Game 1 of the best-of-seven series. Ernie Johnson calls the series with analysts Ron Darling and Cal Ripken with reporter Matt Winer. In addition, TBS’ studio team of host Casey Stern and analysts Pedro Martinez and Gary Sheffield will be on site throughout the series.

Meanwhile, FOX Deportes announced that it posted the highest audience delivery of the MLB Divisional series in the history of Spanish Language television, averaging 109,000 HH’s and 134,000 total viewers for the channel.

NBC Sports inked Bob McKenzie, who has served as a TSN Hockey Insider with more than 35 years of reporting experience, to the team for its NHL coverage. In addition, TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger will join NBC Sports Group’s NHL coverage as a contributor. Both McKenzie and Dreger will continue in their respective roles for TSN in Canada. McKenzie will appear regularly across NBC and NBCSN throughout the NHL regular season and Stanley Cup Playoffs and will serve as an in-studio contributor to NBCSN’s Wednesday Night Rivalry telecasts.

Speaking of hockey, NHL Network revealed its programming lineup for the new season, featuring a boost of programs from Canadian partner Rogers. The new slate of shows will include a simulcast of midday hockey panel Hockey Central at Noon, featuring Daren Millard, Nick Kypreos and Doug MacLean as well as nightly re-cap show Hockey Central Tonight. Saturday shows will include Hockey Central Saturday Preview Show at 5p. Meanwhile, the network will bring back returning shows that include NHL Live, NHL On The Fly, NHL Tonight and a slate of live NHL games from around the League throughout the week.  

NASCAR on FOX pillar Steve Byrnes announced that he will take an indefinite medical leave of absence, effectively immediately, from his on-air work to focus on his health after receiving news he has suffered a recurrence of cancer. Best of luck to him on his recovery efforts!
 
The YES Network revealed that the channel has “expanded its lead as the most-watched regional sports network (RSN) in the country in both Primetime and Total Day delivery in third-quarter 2014.” The network’s Primetime delivery through Q3 2014 averaged 73,000 TV Households in the New York DMA, a 26% increase from the 58,000 TV Households it averaged through Q2 2014. In addition, YES’ Primetime delivery through the first three quarters of 2014 was up 18% over its Primetime delivery through the first three quarters of 2013. Yankees game telecasts on YES averaged 223,000 TV Households for the 2014 season, a 15% year-over-year bump over 2013.

ESPNEWS carries NBA preseason action on Oct. 11 at 5p featuring the Cavaliers/Heat from the HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.  Marc Kestecher and analyst Jon Barry will call the action with ESPN NBA Insider Brian Windhorst providing on-site reports. ESPN will also offer an NBA preseason doubleheader on Wednesday, Oct. 22 with the Cavaliers/Grizzlies at 8p.

Brazilian media company Globo is hitting Sportel Monaco with a diversified slate of sports rights for the first time with a catalogue that includes soccer, volleyball, beach volleyball and urban races, according to multiple reports. Soccer, of course, will include Brazilian League and Sao Paulo State League TV rights. Overall, Globo produces over 500 hours per year of output sports content, with shows distributed to more than 190 countries.

PwC released its US report – At the gate and beyond  which offers an outlook for the sports market in North America through 2018. In the sports rights category, the company projects the media rights will continue growing at a compound annual rate of 9.1% from an estimated $12.5 billion in 2013 to a projected $19.3 billion in 2018. On the sponsorship front, deals are projected to increase at a compound annual rate of 4.8% from an estimated $13.9 billion in 2013 to a forecasted $17.6 billion in 2018.

MMA promotion Bellator locked in Royce Gracie as an official brand ambassador for the Viacom-owned promotion. Gracie will immediately be involved with Bellator including promotion for Bellator 131, as well as host seminars, be involved in autograph and promotional appearances, and assist in the international expansion of Bellator around the world.

The Los Angeles Kings’ 2014 Stanley Cup Championship ring from Tiffany & Co. marks the second collaboration between the team and jeweler. The pair have now launched a larger partnership to introduce the 2014 LA Kings Championship Collection, available to fans at tiffany.com/LAKings with the deal including in-arena branding elements, a custom ‘making of the Championship Ring’ video, and an in-store viewing of the 2014 Championship Ring at the jeweler’s Beverly Hills location from Friday, October 10 through Sunday, October 12.

DIGITAL & TECHNOLOGY

NBC Sports Group announced that RotoWorld has struck a deal with RotoGrinders to provide fantasy players with deeper daily fantasy content. The agreement will see RotoGrinders supply exclusive daily fantasy sports content for RotoWorld’s new Daily section and consist of both columns and videos, and will serve NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL and college football daily fantasy players. In exchange, RotoGrinders’ content and its incentive packages will receive exposure to Rotoworld’s large fantasy sports audience.

ROSTER MOVES

Big news at Fox Networks Group, which announced that Claudia Teran, the unit’s Executive Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, will take on global business and legal affairs at FOX Sports to her list of responsibilities. Teran will now hold the additional title of General Counsel, FOX Sports and oversee a combined business and legal affairs team responsible for domestic and overseas sports rights acquisitions, including US professional teams and collegiate conferences and international sports properties across the globe.
