PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
 
Freeform ordered two additional, 10-episode seasons of The Bold Ones, based on the life of former Cosmopolitan editor Joanna Coles. Amanda Lasher (Gossip Girl) joins as executive producer/showrunner. Season one of the breakout show has garnered over 20 million views on Freeform and all digital platforms.
 
DIY is diving into Pool Kings with an order for 30 new episodes. The series wrapped its first season in September having given the net a 62% boost during its Monday timeslot. New shows are slated to arrive in May 2018.
 
Fox gave a script commitment plus penalty to Adam & Eva, based on the Dutch series, from Steven Levenson (Masters of Sex), Scripted World and 20th Century Fox Television.
 
A comedy starring comedian Trae Crowder (stage persona: “the liberal redneck”) nabbed a script commitment plus penalty from ABC. Based on Crowder’s life, the project comes from Warner Bros. Television and Spondoolie Productions.
 
ABC is also developing Suspects, a cop drama based on the UK series Unforgotten, from the original’s creator Chris Lang, Josh Berman, Sally Haynes, Laura Mackie, BBC Worldwide Productions and Sony Pictures Television.
 
Independent drama producer and distributor Reel One Entertainment acquired screen rights to Philip K. Dick novella “Second Variety,” and attached veteran showrunner David Titcher (The Librarian) to adapt.
 
Production has begun on Sonar Entertainment kids’ 6-9 series Go Away, Unicorn!. The series, produced by Sonar Entertainment for Disney Channel in the U.S. and YTV in Canada, will debut in fall 2018, and air on other Disney Networks in multiple territories.
 
Netflix gave a straight-to-series order to family superhero drama Raising Dion, based on Dennis Liu’s short film about an African-American boy with super abilities. Series comes from Liu; Michael B. Jordan (Friday Night Lights), who will also co-star; Carol Barbee (UnReal); Michael Green (American Gods); and MACRO.
 
 
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
A third season of grisly battles begins on Sunday, February 25 at 9p with the return of StarzAsh vs Evil Dead. Bruce Campbell is back as the chainsaw-wielding anti-hero, who this time around is joined by long-lost daughter Brandy, played by Arielle Carver-O’Neill (House Husbands).
 
Don’t try this at home: Discovery Family’s Zak Storm premieres Saturday, October 14 at 9a. Series follows a boy swept into the Bermuda Triangle while competing in a surfing competition.
 
Ed Stafford: Left for Dead follows the explorer’s attempt to escape from some of the planet’s most extreme environments, with a camera and nothing else, in under 10 days. Survival show launches on Discovery Tuesday, October 10 at 10p.
 
 
COMING UP
 
A Reno, Set Go! Thanksgiving special finds the Bradbury kids – birth, adopted and past fosters – teaming to renovate Sue and Glen’s house while the parents are on their first child-free vacation in 25 years. Reno, Set, Go!: All In the Family airs Monday, November 13 at 10p on Discovery Family.
 
Buzzr will air an encore of its tribute to game show icon Monty Hall on Saturday, October 7 at 11:30a. The edition will include an episode of Tattletales featuring Hall and his wife as contestants. The Let’s Make a Deal host died September 30 at age 96.
 
Telemundo Deportes and Combate Americas are partnering to produce the first-ever Telemundo broadcast of a live mixed martial arts event. Copa Combate will take place Saturday, November 11 at 11:30p, live from Cancun.

When it comes to short-form video, narrowing the focus is key. “We went to Colorado and interviewed a dozen people about how kids are benefitting from medical marijuana. Our plan was to distribute the doc as several short pieces,” recalls Mike Vainisi, head of editorial at ATTN and a juror at the upcoming Cynopsis Short Form Video Festival. “When we started to edit the footage, we realized that the only way it would work was to identify one narrow aspect of the story for each piece. Funny or Die’s No Activity premieres on CBS All Access Sunday, November 12, the same day Star Trek: Discovery wraps. Guest stars on the series, set in the world of a major drug cartel bust, include Will Ferrell, Andy Sedaris and J.K. Simmons.
 
FuboTV is out of Beta on Apple TV, iOS and Android devices and Chromecast. The sports-first live TV streaming service has begun the rollout of a new design, which can be seen on the new version of its tvOS app, and will be available on other devices later this year. The re-launched Apple TV app includes new features, faster navigation and a fresh user interface and user experience.
 
Discovery Communications announced a new VR project, Discovery TRVLR. The 38-episode travel docu-series from Here Be Dragons, which visits all seven continents, launches Friday, November 3 exclusively on YouTube, DiscoveryVR.com, and on the Discovery VR app, and can be seen via the new Google Daydream View, Cardboard, Android and iOS phones. 
 
 
ADVERTISING
 
AMC’s The Walking Dead will run a 6-second ad immediately before each new episode begins at 9p, starting with the second installment of season 8 (Sunday, October 29). Fox aired its first 6-second linear ad during the Teen Choice Awards in August, and has run short takes during sporting events, but AMC’s offering will be the first major 6-second test in a series.
 
Interactive video ads on tablets, desktop and mobile devices pack a punch with viewers, according to a report from Interpublic’s Magna and IPG Media Lab units, “The Interactive Effect: A Key to Surviving in the Attention Economy of a Mobile-First World.” In fact, interactive ads added 47% to the time consumers pay attention to a brand, says the study – making them comparable to good ole TV ads.

Gaumont struck a deal with StyleHaul and Verizon’s go90 for millennial social media drama series, Relationship Status, starring and executive produced by Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us), to media partners worldwide.

RATINGS
 
For the first time, ABC’s Modern Family tied Fox’s Empire as Wednesday’s #1 series among A18-49, with a 1.9/7 rating. CBS newcomer SEAL Team was, for the second week, the night’s most watched broadcast, with 8.01 million viewers.
 
The season 2 premiere of Fox’s Lethal Weapon rose +73% in Live+7 multiplatform viewers (to 7.6 million) versus Live+SD numbers, and saw a +58% boost (to 1.9/8) among A18-49. The season 2 debut of The Mick posted a+785 gain in viewers (to 4.8 million), up +20% from its season one finale.
 
Also touting Live+7 lifts was CBS, which saw NCIS add +4.13 million viewers (to 17.42 million), Bull boast a gain of +4.02 million (to 14.09 million) and NCIS: New Orleans tack on +3.94 million (to 12.72 million).
 
The season 4 premiere of Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet delivered 1.4 million Total Viewers P2+ in L+3, up +6% in P2+ viewers vs. the previous season’s viewership average, helping Animal Planet break into ad-supported cable’s Top Five among Total Viewers Saturday at 9p. The series premiere of My Big Far Pet Makeover at 10p averaged 946,000 Total Viewers P2+, up +20%)vs. the network’s P2+ viewership averages among freshman series 2017 to date.
 
The first installment of Travel Channel’s four-part Expedition Unknown: Hunt for Extraterrestrials on Wednesday saw a +37% increase over the prior 6-week timeslot average. The 10p debut of the after show special, Expedition Unknown: After the Hunt, also posted double digit gains – up 83 percent from its year-ago levels and 27 percent from the prior 6-week timeslot average. Both shows ranked among the top 20 cable programs for their timeslot with P25-54 viewers.
