10/06/15: Jack Dorsey named official Twitter CEO; Oculus Rift likely to cost a pretty penny; Netflix to launch Italian-language series

CYNOPSISDIGITAL
10.06.15

Good morning. It’s Tuesday October 6, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TOP NEWS

It’s official: Jack Dorsey is a real boy. The word “Interim” has been lopped off the Twitter co-founder’s title; he will now serve as the company’s permanent CEO. Dorsey’s got quite the mammoth workload ahead of him: He’s also the CEO of the mobile payments company Square, and he plans to do both jobs simultaneously. Meanwhile, Adam Bain has been named Twitter’s COO. Previously, he served as the company’s President of Global Revenue.

AwesomenessTV is going international. The teenager-oriented digital media company has partnered with Endemol Beyond, the digital arm of the production company Endemol Shine Group. The multi-year pact will bring AwesomenessTV content to an international audience: Local-language content will launch in markets including the UK, France, Brazil, Spain, and Germany. Programming will include AwesomenessTV franchises such as Cheerleaders and IMO. |

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Speaking of international expansion, Netflix plans to release Suburra, its first Italian-language series. The Italian company Cattleya will produce, alongside Italian public service broadcaster RAI. Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah, The Series) will direct. Based on a novel by Giancarlo de Cataldo, the 10-episode organized-crime thriller will premiere globally in 2017. First, a Suburra film, also directed by Sollima, will kick off the story; its Italian theatrical debut comes next week, on October 14. Netflix will debut the film on its streaming service the same day in the U.S. and Latin America. Netflix officially launches its service in Italy on October 22.

SlingTV, Dish Network’s OTT service, is showing its college pride. Sling is adding Campus Insiders, a network that live streams college sporting events.  Campus Insiders is also available on Verizon’s Go90 service.

CONTENT PROGRAMMING

Yahoo has launched Going There with Ana Gasteyer, a new branded comedy series made in partnership with Chevrolet. The series stars titular Saturday Night Live alum Ana Gasteyer. Ellen Degeneres’s A Very Good Production produced the series in association with Blue Ribbon Content, Warner Bros.’ short form digital studio. The series is in part designed to promote the 2016 Chevrolet Traverse. The first of nine episodes debuted last week on Yahoo.com; episodes will be released weekly.

Yesterday, Time Inc.’s Southern Living brand debuted Building Hope, a new unscripted series documenting the lives of five American military veterans who have returned home and taken up residence in new homes across the American south. The homes are mortgage-free, the result of a collaboration between brand sponsor JCPenney, Southern Living, and Operation Finally Home, a non-profit org devoted to building homes for vets and their families. The series, consisting of five 15-minute episodes, to be released monthly, can be viewed on Time Inc. sites including SouthernLiving.com, Time.com, and People.com.

Univision Deportes, the multimedia sports division of Univision Communications Inc. (UCI), announced that it has partnered with the NBA to launch NBA.com/enebea, the NBA’s official digital Spanish-language destination. The website features live game updates, post-game highlights, and a range of stats on each player and team in the league. It also features exclusive content for Hispanic NBA fans, including interviews with the players and coaches most popular with Hispanic fans.

Even Broadway is going digital. The Araca Group, a Broadway producer and merchandising firm, has a new division: Araca Media & Entertainment will be devoted to developing and managing Broadway-related content across digital, TV, film, and, just for the heck of it, stage. Michael Barra, the former head of Stageworks Media, will lead the new branch of the company.  Araca Media & Entertainment will partner with studios, networks, and others to develop projects that will include scripted and unscripted programming for digital video distribution, featuring both Broadway and digital stars.

VC + INVESTORS

Not too shabby. The social live streaming platform YouNow has raised $15 million in funding from Comcast Ventures, Venrock, and Oren Zeev. That doubles the company’s fundraising to date, which now stands at $30 million. YouNow’s streaming platform allows users to interact with their fans via a chat room.

ADVERTISING

The Canadian Broadcasting Company is embracing programmatic. In a partnership with Index Exchange, the CBC’s display inventory – all of it – will now be available for programmatic ad buying. The CBC, which will use Index Exchange’s technology to provide advertising partners with effective reach and advanced targeting, will be the first Canadian media publisher to make its content offerings 100% programmatic.

VIRTUAL REALITY

Looks like the Oculus Rift might set you back a bit. According to Oculus founder Palmer Luckey, the Rift will likely cost a pretty penny when it’s launched. At the Oculus Connect development conference, Luckey said that the device will run more than $350, the general price that was often mentioned when the device was in its Kickstarter phase. (And that’s not counting the PC that’s necessary to power it.) “I’m going to be perfectly honest with you. We’re roughly in [the $350] ballpark… but it’s going to cost more than that,” Luckey said, according to the Escapist. The Oculus Rift ships in 2016.

RESEARCH

During Advertising Week, a variety of companies released some enlightening statistics. And Adweek (not to be confused with Advertising Week) has a chart illuminating some of those announcements. Here are some highlights:

1. Since February, Facebook has seen a 25% increase in ad buyers; its advertisers now total 2.5 million.
2. According to AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, AOL’s ad business grew to 500 million consumers after the company’s June takeover of Microsoft‘s ad sales – an increase of 200 to 300 million.
3. Nielsen says that consumers have more trust in TV advertising (63%) than online video advertising (48%).
4. JoyOfBaking.com CEO Rich Jaworski says that 10 percent of his site’s ads are being scrubbed as a result of ad blockers
5. 80% of Tumblr’s monthly users – that accounts for 550 million of them, for the record – view the platform on mobile.

Forrester Consulting has released a fascinating (if not exactly surprising) study. Commissioned by marketing technology company IgnitionOne, the report concluded that most companies that are trying to execute cross-channel marketing campaigns are being undermined by poor data integration. Among other key findings: While 95% percent of marketers surveyed say they have a collaborative relationship with IT, only 27% of them have unified measurement capabilities enabling them to understand consumer experiences across channels and devices. Learn more about the study here.

Consultancy agency Interbrand released its annual report of the world’s most valuable brands, and six of the top 10 are tech companies. Quick, can you guess what the top two are? (Hint: This isn’t a trick question.) Apple is in first place. Its value is 43% higher than it was last year; it’s now worth $170 billion. Google comes in second at $120 billlion dollars, an increase of 12 percent over last year. You can find the full list here.
