CYNOPSISDIGITAL
10.05.16

Good morning. It’s Wednesday October 5, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Audience segmentation: Audience segmentation is a process of dividing people into subgroups based upon defined criteria – for instance, media usage, product usage, demographics, psychographics, and communication behaviors. Audience segmentation is a vital tool in targeted digital marketing and programmatic advertising.

TOP NEWS

Google made several new announcements at its annual hardware event. As expected, the tech giant announced its new Pixel smartphones and, as Cynopsis Digital previewed yesterday, the new mobile-based Daydream VR headset. (Price: $79.) Also on the company’s agenda: The Wi-Fi-powered Google Home, a voice-operated personal assistant that will likely serve as Amazon Echo’s most formidable competition. The Google Home speaker was initially announced in May, but Google is out with more details. Google Home will cost $129, and will come with a free six-month subscription to YouTube Red. Google Home is on sale now, and will ship on November 4.

Also unveiled at the Google event: the Chromecast Ultra, a new addition to Google’s Chromecast family of connected TV devices. The new Ultra supports 4K ultra-HD video streaming, as well as HDR (high-dynamic range) picture. It’ll sell at $69 – $34 more than the most-recently released version of Chromecast.  Like Google Home, it will ship in November.

PROGRAMMATIC ADVERTISING

PushSpring, an app-based mobile audience targeting platform, announced a new partnership with comScore. Under the new pact, comScore wll help PushSpring introduce new mobile audience segments based on PushSpring’s App Graph data and comScore’s Mobile Metrix. (In other words, the new program makes use of PushSpring’s app analytics and comScore’s mobile demographic data.) The new segments are designed for use in programmatic ad-buying.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS

A Series of Unfortunate Events had its day on the big screen back in 2004. Now Netflix’s long-in-the-works TV version looks set to reach some smaller screens. According to an announcement from Netflix, the series will debut next year on January 13. Like the 2004 film, the show is based on the children’s novels by Lemony Snicket (the pen name of author Daniel Handler). Netflix initially greenlit the series in November 2014. The service is out with a new trailer, which you can check out here.

RESEARCH

Pre-roll ads are still more widely used than mid-roll ads, but mid-roll ads are on the rise. That’s the takeaway from Ooyala’s new study, which finds that mid-rolls ads (i.e., ads that appear in the middle of a digital video) comprised a 24% share in the digital ad space as of April 2014. That’s up from 19% in February of 2015. Meanwhile, pre-roll ads (ads that appear before the start of a video) made up a 60% share as of April. But that’s down from a 75% share in February 2015. Post-roll advertising, meanwhile, makes up the smallest share, growing from 3.5% to 7%.

To determine the TV ads generating the most digital response, iSpot.tv measures digital actions across Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all major search engines. Shown below, a look at the marketers that generated the most buzz by advertising during the season premiere of NBC’s Saturday Night Live: Old Navy (with a high-energy spot starring a crew of dancing skaters), Marvel (for Doctor Strange), General Electric (with a couple of comic spots supporting its "The industrial company. That’s also a digital company" campaign), Columbia Pictures (for Inferno) and Jack Daniel’s (with a visit to the brand’s hometown of Lynchburg, TN). NBC honored its promise to cut back on commercial interruptions during SNL, reducing ad load during the season premiere by nearly 5 minutes. – iSpot.TV

The ListenFirstTelevision Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating capture organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

Streaming Series (9/26/16 – 10/2/16)

Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The Publicis-owned digital agency Razorfish has a new resident data wiz. Kevin Mercurio has been hired as Director of Data Science for Cosmos, the agency’s digital intelligence platform. Razorfish first rolled out Cosmos this past summer; the platform is designed to monitor online and offline behavior. Mercurio, who holds a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics from Harvard, most recently worked at the consultancy Insight Data Science. He also spent three years at CERN, the famed particle research lab in Geneva, Switzerland. At Razorfish, Mercurio will develop deep learning algorithms for Cosmos, with the aim of improving the platform’s ability to predict the needs of consumers along the path to purchase.

Pinterest has named Todd Morgenfeld as its it first-ever Chief Financial Officer, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal. Morgenfeld joins the company from Twitter, where he served as VP of Finance. For months, there has been widespread speculation that Pinterest may be moving toward an IPO. Morgenfeld’s hire will likely kick that speculation into hyper-drive.

The sports-centric internet-based TV service fuboTV has named a new exec. Michael Smith will now serve as Chief Product Officer, overseeing product management from the company’s New York office. Before joining fuboTV, Smith served as VP of Product Management at SwiftKey, a company that develops smart prediction technology for mobile typing.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT

They really do make all the best stuff in Japan. Toyota has unveiled Kirobo Mini, a talkative pint-sized robot that can detect human emotions by reading facial expressions. It’ll be sold in Japanese Toyota dealerships starting next year. And it won’t come cheap: Kirobo Mini will run Japanese buyers the equivalent of 400 U.S. dollars. (Then again, if you’re already buying a car, it might seem less daunting by comparison.) Toyota is out with a quick video demonstrating the bot. You can check it out here.

See you on tomorrow,
David Teich
