TODAY’S TOP NEWS

Google is now Alphabet Inc. Or at least, Alphabet Inc. now owns Google…Huh? Okay, here are the basics: Google had umpteen specialty projects, ranging from venture capitalism to self-driving cars, that had little to do with the company’s core business (search, advertising, YouTube, and Android tech, among other things). Now, the different areas of focus have been divided into separate companies, Google being one of them. They all have separate CEOs, and operate under the parent company Alphabet. For more specifics, check it out a helpful chart here. Larry Page, formerly CEO of Google, will now be CEO of Alphabet.

Adblock
(not to be confused with its rival, Adblock Plus) has been sold. Michael Gundlach, the founder of the well-known ad-blocking extension for Chrome and Safari, made the announcement to users via pop-up. The price wasn’t mentioned, nor was the name of the buyer, who reportedly requested anonymity. Gundlach’s pop-up announced another significant development: Adblock will opt in to the Acceptable Ads program, already used by Adblock Plus. Using strict guidelines, the program pinpoints ads not deemed intrusive or annoying, and allows them to be shown. Users, however, can still disable the feature and banish all ads.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Amazon’s getting a little more fashionable. The company picked up a new season of The Fashion Fund, an unscripted series from Conde Nast Entertainment. The show centers on fashion designers competing for a $400,000 grand prize and features Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, as well Diane von Furstenberg, Chair of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The Fashion Fund began as a Hulu original in 2012, before moving to Ovation for two seasons beginning in 2014. The new season will stream on Amazon Prime in 2016. And next year, Amazon will launch an online retail shop featuring Spring 2016 collections from this season’s finalists.

Last week, CBS and Amazon inked a deal giving Amazon exclusive SVOD rights to three new summer series. The shows will go live on Amazon Prime four days after linear airing. The deal kicks off next summer, with CBS’s comic thriller BrainDead, from The Good Wife producers Robert and Michelle King. The deal also extends and expands the CBS (and CBS-owned Showtime) programming available to Amazon Prime members, adding titles including The Tudors, The L Word, and America’s Next Top Model.

English YouTube stars (and roommates) Caspar Lee and Joe Sugg are taking their relationship to the road. Alongside Dom Smales, the Managing Director and Founder of social media management agency Gleam Futures, Lee and Sugg have created Raucous Productions, a new production studio. Raucous’s first project, called Joe and Caspar Hit the Road, well center on a European road trip taken by Lee and Sugg. BBC Worldwide is co-producing the project with Raucous.

APPS + GAMES

When you run the world’s most popular photo-sharing app, sometimes you have to talk about nipples. Last week, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom argued that Apple is to blame for Instagram’s habit of removing photos of topless women – but not topless men. The policy has drawn scorn from the #FreeTheNipple equality movement. Systrom says the company’s motivations boil down to one figure: 12+. That’s Instagram’s age classification on Apple’s App Store. With nudity – and Apple deems female nipples as such – it would be 17+, reducing the eligible downloader pool. “In order to scale effectively there are [some] tough calls," said Systrom.

Last week, Samsung Electronics America launched Samsung Kids, an ad-free mobile service for kids. The service, which was created alongside the children’s education and entertainment company Fingerprint, is available exclusively on the kid-friendly Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite tablet. Samsung Kids features interactive educational apps and games and includes content and characters from brands such as DreamWorks Animation, The Jim Henson Company, Highlights for Children, National Geographic and PBS KIDS.

DIGITAL CONTENT CREATORS

YouTube
vlogger Lizze Velasquez was born with a rare syndrome affecting her physical appearance, making her the victim of vicious cyber-bullying when she was in high school. Her response was to become a motivational speaker and activist. Now, just in time for National Bullying Prevention Month, the Women Rising organization has posted a video featuring multiple celebrities, each of whom recognizes National Bullying Prevention month with one simple message: “I Stand with Lizzie.”  Celebs in the video include the likes of Chris Hemsworth and Kristen Bell, along with YouTube stars including Michelle Phan and iJustine. A documentary about Velasquez was released digitally and in theaters on September 25.

YouTube stars Tyler Oakley and Lilly Singh (aka IISuperwomanII) are the central features of the company’s latest ad campaign. As part of that campaign, Oakley and Singh now have their own Someecards. Someecards, a brand of humorous e-greeting card, are designed for maximum shareability. You can see (and share) Oakley’s and Singh’s here.

CONTENT PROGRAMMING

It’s often said that movie and TV superheroes skew too heavily male. DC Comics, Warner Bros. Consumer Products, Mattel and Lego have joined forces to change that with the launch of DCSuperHeroGirls.com, a website showcasing superheroines ranging from WonderWoman to BatGirl. The site, which debuted late last week, will roll out globally later in October. The site’s features include stories, quizzes, games, and a new digital animated series aimed at girls six to 12 years old. The series’ first episode, Welcome to Super Hero High, premiered October 1, with new episodes to air weekly.

Season 7 of the hit British series Doc Martin will makes its U.S. debut today, October 5, airing exclusively on the streaming service Acorn TV. The series airs on ITV in the U.K.

ADVERTISING

That new Snapchat feature that can make you look like you’re vomiting rainbows? Snapchat’s looking to monetize it. Lenses, as the animated-selfie feature is called, will likely be pitched as an advertising unit. The company is looking to start selling lens-based ads to debut this Halloween. And sponsored lenses won’t come cheap: According to the Financial Times, we’re talking $750,000 daily on peak-usage days (holidays, for instance) and $450,000 on other days.

OTT + SVOD

US-based TV channel Eurocinema announced the launch of Eurocinema World, a live channel and SVOD service. The channel will feature acclaimed European films, as well as Euro-centric lifestyle content and launch in early 2016, in the US, Latin America, Asia, and Europe.

Season 2 of Showtime drama The Affair debuted Sunday. Immediately afterward, the season’s second episode became available a week early. Showtime subscribers can access the episode through Showtime Anytime, Showtime On Demand, and Showtime’s streaming service. Episode 2 officially premieres October 11.

RESEARCH

Ah, the coveted 18-34-year-old demo. It may not come as a surprise, but a lot of them have embraced digital – and a study from ABC backs that up. The company found that 28% of primetime viewing among 18-34-year-olds comes post-airing, from VOD and online streaming. Not surprisingly, the number is lower among older groups: 17% of 18-49-year-olds, and 11% of 25-54-year-olds are watching post-broadcast via VOD and streaming. Linear viewing still accounts for the majority of viewership among all age groups. The data was collected from September 21 2014 through May 20 2015. More info here.

According to German research company Statista, Netflix isn’t doing as well in Europe as it is in North America. Still, there are bright spots. Statista finds that in North America, roughly 67 million consumers are subscribed to paid video streaming services; in the U.S., 71% of those subscribers use Netflix. In Canada, it’s 68%. Meanwhile, the overall number of SVOD subscribers in Europe is about 12 million. Germany, France and the UK are the major markets. Statista finds that about 40% of German SVOD users use Netflix; in France it’s 37%. The UK? A whopping 80%. Full study here.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT

Felix
PewDiePie Kjellberg, the world’s most subscribed-to YouTuber, never gets censored on his own channel. But apparently it’s a different story when he curses on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert – even when he does it in Swedish. Courtesy of the The Late Show’s YouTube page, check out a clip of the interview, if only for the once-in-a-lifetime thrill of seeing PewDiePie in a suit. Watch it here
