A day after ABC announced a season three pickup for Mistresses, Alyssa Milano took to the Internet to announce she won’t be returning to the summer drama, which is relocating shooting to Vancouver. “I have two babies under four,” the actress explained on her web site. “Being a wife and mother comes first…I will miss this job desperately and wish everyone the absolute best.”

IN THE NEWS

Also saying goodbye: Yvette Nicole Brown, exiting Community to minister to her ailing father. “My dad needs daily care and he needs me,” Brown told TV Guide. “It was a difficult decision for me to make, but I had to choose my dad.” Community moves from NBC to Yahoo for season six.

Netflix ordered CGI-animated series Kong: Planet of the Apes, set in 2050, from exec producer Avi Arad (Iron Man). A feature-length film will be followed by 12 half-hour eps in 2016.

Ahead of Tuesday’s announcement of an NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment reorg that put Frances Berwick in charge of a newly-created lifestyle group and left E! president Suzanne Kolb out of a job, Kolb sent a memo to staff expressing her appreciation. “I know the future for E! shines bright and I look forward to cheering you on as you reach new heights,” said the 10-year E! vet. “I am a better person for knowing you and a better executive for working with you. I look forward to our paths crossing again soon.”

Elisabeth Murdoch will leave the TV production company she founded in 2001, Shine Group, after its merger with Endemol and Core Media, both controlled by private equity fund Apollo Global Management, reported the Financial Times. Shine was acquired on 2011 by Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox (then News Corp).

If you’re in the Times Square neighborhood this morning, you can watch history in the making, sort of: TNT is attempting to break the Guinness world record for the tallest pancake stack. The stunt promotes the premiere of new cooking competition On the Menu, with show host Ty Pennington (Extreme Makeover: Home Edition) and chef Emeril Lagasse on hand. Flapjack reveal happens at 8a; show launches Friday, October 3 at 8p.

Shout! Factory acquired film and entertainment distribution company Westchester Films, Inc., with rights to a library of over 400 classic and first-run movies. “This acquisition is a terrific opportunity for us to further strengthen our broadcast, VOD, satellite and telco distribution businesses and to maximize the value of both classic film libraries across multiple entertainment platforms and territories,” said Shout! founders Richard Foos, Bob Emmer and Garson Foos.

As part of its “Connect the Dots” education initiative, Discovery Communications is airing a cross-channel public service announcement promoting science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and mentorship. The PSA, featuring MythBusters co-host Kari Byron, will air across all of Discovery’s 13 U.S. networks.

The NYTVF announced highlights of its tenth annual New York Television Festival, running October 20-25 in NYC. Included: creative keynote conversations with showrunners Carlton Cuse (Lost), Jenni Konner (Girls) and Beau Willimon (House of Cards), as well as special events from BET, FremantleMedia, MTV and Starz, and debut readings of three original sitcoms.

PBS and CBS were the big winners at the 35th Annual News and Documentary Emmy Awards Tuesday night in NYC. PBS took home 11 awards and CBS nabbed 10, including five for 60 Minutes. A complete list of winners is here.

MTV, FX and ABC Family all received excellent grades in GLAAD’s annual Network Responsibility Index, rating LGBT content during the 2013-2014 season based on their percentage of LGBT-inclusive hours of primetime programming. MTV and FX tied at the top 49 percent; ABC Family followed with 42 percent, and featured the highest percentage of impressions made by lesbians and LGBT people of color among cable nets. Among broadcast, NBC was first with 37 percent, followed by Fox (36 percent), ABC (34 percent), The CW (33 percent) and CBS (28 percent).

Sportsman Channel renewed its agreement to serve as official network partner of Alaska’s Iditarod. Coverage will include multiple hours of race programming and specials, culminating with the 2015 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race beginning March 7 in Anchorage.

Outdoor Channel has launched its eighth annual “Gear Up and Go!” sweepstakes, running through the month of October, designed to “encourage local affiliate opportunities by heightening existing audience engagement and creating interest from new viewers.” Since its inception, the initiative has enrolled more than 750,000 entries from outdoors enthusiasts. 

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Keshet International sold drama concept Prisoners of War (Homeland in the U.S.) for a Spanish-language version, to be broadcast in Mexico (Televisa) and Colombia (TBC). Univision will hold rights for the U.S. Hispanic market, to air on sister channel Unimas. The 70-ep series will come from Productions RTI Colombia (Queen of the South).

Discovery Studios signed a production deal with Rob Kerr (Iron Resurrection), to develop and produce original programming as executive producer. “Discovery Studios offers a fresh vibe and unique set-up that allows its producers to thrive both individually and collectively to generate the best content possible,” said Kerr.

IFC ordered a pilot script from Jim Serpico and Tom Sellitti of Apostle for Uncle Chubby’s, a comedy focused on friends on an amateur hockey team. Apostle partner Denis Leary is attached as exec producer with Sellitti and Serpico.

FX ordered a pilot for comedy Pariah, starring standup comedian Bill Burr, created by John Chernin and Dave Chernin (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) and produced by RCG Productions.

CBS bought drama C.H.A.O.S. – Downtown Division from K.J. Steinberg with penalty. Steinberg, who will exec produce with Lynda Obst, has an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television.

Kevin Falls (Franklin & Bash) signed an overall deal with Twentieth Century Fox Television, where he produced 2007 sci-fi drama Journeyman. Falls has already sold a workplace drama project, Castlebar, to Fox.

COMING UP

Eight young women compete for a job working with fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg in E! reality competition House of DVF, premiering Sunday, November 2 at 10p. The show will launch in 100 countries next month.

In support of National Bullying Prevention Month, UP is premiering two movies focused on teens overcoming bullying. Nowhere Safe, starring Natasha Henstridge (CSI: Miami), Jamie Kennedy (The Cleveland Show) and Danielle Chuchran (Little House on the Prairie) debuts Sunday, October 5 at 7p. If I Had Wings, with Richard Harmon (Continuum), Jaren Brandt Bartlett (Artic Air), Jill Hennessy (Law & Order) and Craig Bierko (Cinderella Man) arrives Sunday, October 19 at 7p.

Nat Geo’s Rafting Alaska (wt) will track boatman on the Yukon River, on their way to purchase supplies for the brutal winter. Gurney Productions docu-series set to premiere in summer 2015, and globally in 171 countries.

We’ll drink to that! Travel is going on what it dubs a spirit’ual journey with Booze Traveler, launching Monday, November 24 at 10p. Former bartender Jack Maxwell circles the globe exploring local cultures through the lens of alcoholic concoctions, in 15 one-hour eps from Karga Seven Pictures.

A music video for Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul will air at 7:15p on Sunday, October 5, during the final night of a two-month AMC’s Bad marathon. Saul is slated to premiere in February.

Fusion has acquired a series of half-hour JAY Z’s Life+Times Presents specials, launched by RocNation and IconicTV with content curated by Shawn Carter that covers art, sports, music, fashion and culture. Fusion will launch with episodes from the “Where I’m From” series.

NASCAR + anglers = Wheels & Reels, a new half hour reality fishing competition that has racers letting reels fly for charity alongside their biggest fans. Series from Texo Entertainment launches Sunday, October 12 at 12p on World Fishing Network.

Arts net Ovation will air the world television premiere of Kevin Spacey documentary NOW: In the Wings on a World Stage on Sunday, November 9 at 8p. Film chronicles the tour of Spacey and Sam Mendes’ production of Richard III.

RETURNING SERIES

Showtime set Sunday, January 11 as the premiere date for three returning series. Season five of Shameless launches at 9p, followed by the fourth season bows of House of Lies at 10p and Episodes at 10:30p.

NBC’s The Sing-Off will return for a fifth round as a holiday event, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Last time around, the Sony Pictures Television/One Three Media a cappella competition was a seven-night event ending Christmas Eve.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

A national TV campaign for Strongbow hard cider will be supported by “significant” spending, importer Heineken USA’s senior director for global brands Charles van Es told AdAge. “We feel like we have a great story to tell and television is a fantastic medium.” A “Slow Motion Horse” spot from Droga5 started airing Wednesday, with another ad arriving later in the fall.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Viacom struck a renewal agreement with Verizon Communications, covering FiOS’s carriage of 25 Viacom networks, that gives Verizon Wireless rights to distribute “marquee content” to its mobile customers. FiOS customers will have access to all of Viacom’s networks, live and on-demand, in and out of the home, starting in early 2015,via the FiOS Mobile app.

On the flip side, Viacom was unable to reach a carriage renewal deal with Suddenlink, which as of midnight October 1 lost Viacom channels; customers also were blocked from accessing shows on the cable net online. Suddenlink claims Viacom demanded a nearly 50 percent increase in payments; Viacom counters it agreed to a renewal proposal but Suddenlink backed out.

SSN TV (Soul of the South Network) launched on the primary channel of WMDE in Washington, D.C., following its July 15 premiere in 1.5 million Verizon FiOS households in NYC. The net, which bowed in May 2013, can now be seen in nine of the top ten African-American DMAs. “Local broadcasters are positively responding to what we have trademarked as our ‘NICE 24/7’ programming format,” said CEO Doug McHenry, “a daily lineup of news, information, cultural and entertainment.”

TV5MONDE USA has expanded its relationship with Charter Communications, resulting in the recent launch of two channels, TiVi5MONDE Kids and TV5MONDE Info. Charter customers in select markets will have access to three HD channels offering French language programming. Currently, TV5MONDE HD is available to in Atlanta, GA, Fort Worth, TX, LA, Long Beach and San Louis Obispo in CA, Madison, WI, Reno, NV and St. Louis, MO.

Music net Revolt struck distribution partnerships with Verizon FiOS TV and Suddenlink, adding reach across 46 of the top 50 U.S. markets-including NYC, LA, Chicago, Miami, Boston, Atlanta and D.C. on Verizon FiOS, and 16 states with Suddenlink’s U.S. footprint.

WeatherNation TV is partnering with WILX-TV 10 to broadcast 24/7 weather news on digital TV channel 10.2 across Lansing and Jackson, Mich., and on Comcast Channel 294 and WOW Cable Channel 151 across central Michigan.

RATINGS

Freshman grades: ABC comedies Selfie and Manhattan Love Story premiered Tuesday with A18-49 ratings of 1.6/5 and 1.5/5, respectively. In week two, CBS’s NCIS: New Orleans held 95 percent of its premiere viewers (16.4 million) and 92 percent among A18-49 (2.3/7).

OWN posted gains in 3Q14 across key demos in prime: up 7 percent among W25-54, up 12 percent in total viewers and up 18 percent among African-American W25-54) versus the prior quarter.

3Q14 was Nat Geo WILD’s best third quarter ever, delivering 85,000 P25-54 and 215,000 total viewers during Prime.Leading the charge: the net’s number one  series, The Incredible Dr. Pol, which resulted in a 5 percent lift versus last summer’s run. More good news: September 2014 marked Nat Geo’s 9th consecutive month of year over year ratings growth.

Tuesday’s season 10 finale of Little People, Big World brought TLC 2.3 million P2+ viewers, propelling the network to the top spot on cable with W18-49/18-34. The season finale episode was also the highest rated episode in nearly six years with W25-54. 

September was Bounce TV’s most-watched month ever in primetime HH (168,000, up 60 percent) and A25-54 (101,000, up 55 percent) delivery. For the quarter versus 3Q13, the net was up 45 percent in HH and 21 percent in the demo.

Tuesday A18-49 Analysis: NBC won the most A18-49 viewers Tuesday with 3.5/11, according to Nielsen. NBC’s The Voice was first at 8p with 3.8/13, followed by 2.7/9 for CBS’s NCIS. The Voice maintained its lead at 9p with 4.5/13 at 9p, versus 2.3/7 for CBS’s NCIS: New Orleans. Chicago Fire’s 2.3/7 kept NBC on top at 10p; CBS’s Person of Interest was next with 1.8/6.
