The minds that launched MLG are now turning their attention to Vindex, launching with initial funding of $60 million in a move to build a “first-of-its-kind global esports infrastructure platform” in addition to announcing the acquisition of Next Generation Esports and the launch of Esports Engine.
The venture was founded by Mike Sepso and Sundance DiGiovanni, co-founders of Major League Gaming, along with Bryan Binder and Jason Garmise, successful fintech entrepreneurs and private investors. The company will be led by CEO Sepso, with the company looking to the talents of more than 100 employees, proprietary broadcast technology and competition management software to equip partners with the industry-leading services and technology needed to scale to an increasingly mainstream global audience. The $60 million Series A round is backed by investors across the hedge fund and private equity world and the company is supported by an industry-leading Board of Directors. Initial board members include Steve Bornstein, former CEO of ESPN and the NFL Network, and Joel Greenblatt, founder of Gotham Asset Management. ”

Activision Blizzard Esports mapped out the debut of the Call of Duty League, which is slated to kick off with the Call of Duty League Launch Weekend taking place at the Minneapolis Armory from January 24-26, 2020, in Minneapolis. Hosted by the Minnesota Røkkr team, operated by WISE Ventures Esports, the weekend will serve up all 12 professional Call of Duty League teams competing across three days. The opening weekend of the regular season will feature additional fan and player experiences to celebrate the launch of Activision Blizzard Esports’ new city-based league. Launch Weekend will also feature the season’s first Call of Duty Challengers Open, pitting amateur players from around the world who can compete as teams in an open bracket tournament format.
ESL, in partnership with Intel and Blizzard Entertainment, is bringing StarCraft II back to Intel Extreme Masters Katowice in 2020. The tournament will mark the 10th anniversary of StarCraft as a leading title on IEM as players compete for a share of a $400,000 prize pool. The tournament takes place starting on February 24, culminating in the Spodek Arena on March 1st.
Speaking of StarCraft II, BlizzCon gears up this weekend with a slate of championships on the line. For the Overwatch World Cup, 30 teams will compete in the World Cup preliminaries on Thursday, fighting for five available berths in the main group. The main group stage starts Friday, followed by the Ceremony of Nations, the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals on Saturday. The $500,000 Hearthstone Global Finals will feature eight players who emerged from Grandmasters competitions around the globe with competition starting on Friday at 3p. The $600,000 StarCraft II World Championship Series Global Finals will continue with the eight players advancing from the opening week in Seoul, as the quarterfinals start at 3p on Friday, with the semifinals (5p) and finals (6p) taking place on Saturday. The World of Warcraft Arena World Championship and the Mythic Dungeon International Global Finals will each feature record $330,000 prize pools. The MDI competition will begin immediately following the opening ceremonies on Friday, with the AWC running through Saturday.
With its first event taking place from Nov. 9-10 in Pomona, Player Omega unveiled its full list of partners for the “participatory tour celebrating the passionate lifestyle of esports and gaming.” In addition to previously announced events featuring Super League Gaming, who are hosting events for Fortnite, Minecraft and League of Legends, and Nerd Street Gamers, who will be hosting tournaments for CS:GO and Apex Legends, other partnerships include the Military Gaming League, HADO USA – Techno-Sport Tournament + Open Play, GENESIS, the Electronic Gaming Federation, Subnation Station, and Collegiate StarLeague
The Electronic Gaming Federation is launching two preseason national collegiate tournaments for competitive Division 1 esports teams. The EGF BIG EAST Esports Invitational tournament will pit esports teams from selected schools in the BIG EAST Conference on December 7-8 in NYC, including Butler, DePaul, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Villanova and Xavier. The EGF Power Five Esports Invitational, will be held January 18-19, 2020 features schools from the athletic conferences of the SEC, ACC, Pac 12, Big Ten, and Big 12. Scheduled Power Five participating teams include: Florida State University, University of Illinois, Louisiana State University, Ole Miss, and Washington State University.
ESL opened the doors to The ESL Academy delivered by DHL, set to provide Dota 2 talent with the “opportunity to display their ability on the big stage.” In cooperation with DHL as founding and presenting partner, the program will implement a system to develop and foster potential Dota 2 talent, accelerating their path to professional esports. The ESL Academy season features over $240,000 in combined prize-pools throughout year one.
Summoners War World Arena Championship 2019, held by Com2uS and presented by Google Play, saw its best performing finale ever. The event took place on Oct. 26, reporting that play hit 1.25 million views during the live broadcast – 10 times the cumulative views from last year. The broadcasting video on the official Summoners War Esports YouTube channel hit nearly 2 million views within 24 hours after the tournament.
Last Thursday, the highly anticipated Call of Duty: Modern Warfare took over digital marketplaces & game streaming platforms selling $600M in its first three days, and generating over 20M streaming H. Watched. Stream Hatchet’s latest report focuses in on distributor platform market share, and the top influencers:
- Twitch leads CoD viewership. The platform hosted 4 out of the 5 top CoD streamers and generated 80.2% of the total CoD H. Watched.
- Top streamers share of distributor platforms: Shroud accounted for 64% of the 1.5M H. Watched on Mixer, whereas DrDisrespect generated 9% on Twitch.
- Influencers vs platforms: The DrDisrespect generated 38.7k more CoD hours than all CoD streamers on Mixer
Gaming peripherals and accessories brand SteelSeries is teaming up with RFRSH Entertainment’s BLAST Pro Series activating at BLAST Pro Series Copenhagen from Nov. 1-2. “SteelSeries has been a proud and invested member of the community since our humble beginnings,” said Tony Trubridge, Director of Esports at SteelSeries, “from being the sole sponsor of the world’s first CS:GO Major to our latest partnership with the BLAST Pro Series in Copenhagen. Mixer nabbed another big fish with the announcement that professional streamer and former competitive gamer Michael “Shroud” Grzesiek is teaming up with Microsoft’s interactive livestreaming service to stream games and video exclusively on the platform. Shroud teaming up with Mixer was supported by Loaded, Shroud’s management company. “As my career has progressed since retiring from competitive Counter-Strike, I did not imagine I would be here today sharing the next chapter of my story,” said Shroud. “I am incredibly grateful and honored for the success I’ve had and that’s thanks to my community. With that, the next chapter is here and I am excited and motivated to deliver the best livestreams yet for me. The move to Mixer allows me to focus on what I love: gaming. I hope you all continue to be a part of my community in this transition, I can’t wait to show you all the things we have in store!”
In addition, Cory ‘KingGothalion’ Michael also announced his move to Microsoft’s streaming platform. “I sat down thinking this was gonna be a tough decision, but it was actually kinda easy,” he said on the announcement on Twitter. “It is my belief that working closer with Xbox and Microsoft is not only gonna help us propel what we’re doing but also propel what’s also has been important to the channel, which is doing good in gaming.”
Ubisoft is partnering up with Mediapro’s The Liga de Videojuegos Profesional, the largest Spanish-language esports organization, to produce Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege competitions in Mexico. LVP and Ubisoft will join forces to organize the first edition of a new tournament called Mexico Challengers, to be held between October and early 2020, and which is open to both professional and amateur teams.
TV Azteca and Allied Esports announced that Azteca Esports will carry the Gears 5 Pro League in Latin America via a new alliance with Gears Esports. Starting today, Azteca Esports will produce live, weekly coverage of the four-team Latin America region, including a live finale on November 25 at TV Azteca Studios in Mexico City. “Mexico’s incredible passion for the Gears franchise has resulted in fans expressing their love of Gears through everything from Gears Ink tattoos to themed weddings,” said Rose Gunson, Esports Creative Program Manager for Gears Esports at The Coalition. “This enthusiasm extends to the games themselves, as the player base in Mexico produces some of the highest activity for Gears titles and features more players playing Gears of War 4 at the highest professional skill levels than anywhere else.”
Live streaming platform Huya inked a three-year China-exclusive streaming deal with Riot Games to carry the LCK, League of Legends’ top pro competition in South Korea. Huya will represent the LCK in all potential partnerships/sponsorship negotiations for the league’s Chinese streams.
Lots more banners were revealed for the upcoming Call of Duty League. For the Atlanta franchise, the team announced that it would be partnering with FaZe Clan for the team, working with Atlanta Esports Ventures to run the squad. Subsequently, the team would be known as the Atlanta FaZe. “We found partners that we love, which is not easy on both sides,” said FaZe Clan CEO Lee Trink. “I wanted to look for a creative way to maintain our long-standing relationship with Call of Duty.” Cox Enterprises purchased a 13,237 square foot warehouse that will serve as the new home of the Atlanta Reign and the Atlanta FaZe.
Misfits Gaming announced that its Call of Duty franchise will be known as the Florida Mutineers. In the announcement, the team stated that the choice was “inspired by the history of pirates off the Florida coast, the Florida Mutineers are relentless, unapologetic, determined and always play their own way in pursuit of victory. Our crew is everything to us, we stand together united, throw shoulders or get thrown overboard.”
The Toronto team, meanwhile, will be known as the Toronto Ultra. In addition, Toronto unveiled its mascot: Tilt the squirrel. “When we were thinking through what to call ourselves, our minds travelled through a galaxy of possibilities,” the team said in the announcement. “Animals, historical connections, tough guy references, and even deep sounding monikers. But in the end, we felt we were just trying too hard. We’re Ultra, and like Toronto, we love that what we mean is whatever you represent. Proud, humble, smooth, or loud — whatever you are, Ultra is just the beginning of it. You fill in the rest.”
Finally, in the least surprising announcement, Immortals Gaming Club confirmed that its team would be known as OpTic Gaming Los Angeles. The company acquired OpTic earlier this year, and opted to maintain the historical branding of the team.
Echo Fox issued an official release formally announcing that Rick Fox had given up all management responsibilities and his financial stake in the team as part of a settlement agreement. That agreement resolves lawsuits between the two parties.
EA announced that EA Access is coming to Steam, where it will become the first gaming subscription service made available on the platform. Additionally, EA will begin selling its games on Steam again, as part of the new deal, after it moved its titles off the marketplace and hosted them exclusively on the Origin store in 2011. The agreement kicks in with the launch of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order on Nov. 15 and will subsequently see titles such as The Sims 4 and Unravel Two also be available on the service. Multiplayer titles such as Apex Legends, FIFA 20 and Battlefield V will be available next year, and will include cross-play – allowing players on both Origin and Steam to play together.
Activision reports that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare opened with more than $600 million in sell-through worldwide in its first three days of release. The title sold more units in its first three days than any other Call of Duty game sold in the same period in this console generation, to rank as the top-selling new premium game release of 2019. Modern Warfare also established a new record as the top-selling digital opening in Activision history.
New Wave Esports announced that common shares of the company began trading on the Canadian Securities Exchange under the stock symbol “NWES” as of yesterday. Dubai-based W Ventures announced plans to invest $50 million to develop a local esports and gaming ecosystem in the Middle East and North Africa. The project will see the funding invested into a new business model that aims to improve gaming in the region.
Former Microsoft exec Mike Ybarra was named as the new executive VP and GM of Blizzard Entertainment. “We will work with all our energy to serve gamers with incredible content and experiences,” he tweeted. “I can’t wait to be part of this team.”
