Riot Games is using the ten-year anniversary of League of Legends to announce plans that could change the balance of esports, with new titles in development across the spectrum of genres, along with new content and platform plans. In addition to updates for the core League of Legends game, the company announced that autobattler, Teamfight Tactics, is coming to mobile in Q1 2020 as well as the company’s entry into the card genre via Legends of Runeterra, a free-to-play strategy card game set in the world of LoL. Meanwhile, League of Legends: Wild Rift will serve as a new 5v5 MOBA for mobile and console. Looking ahead, the publisher also revealed Project A, a “stylish, competitive, character-based tactical shooter for PC,” that is set on a beautiful near-future Earth and has a lethal cast of characters, each with unique abilities that create tactical opportunities for their gunplay to shine. More information to be revealed in 2020. Project L will become a fighting game set in the LoL Universe and Project F serves as a temporary name for a very early development MMO project that explores the possibilities of traversing the world of Runeterra with friends. Finally, Riot Games revealed release plans for LoL Esports Manager, offering players a opportunity to create and run their own versions of professional League of Legends teams.
On the content side, the company announced Arcane, a League of Legends animated series developed and produced by Riot Games releasing in 2020. Set in utopian Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun, the story follows the origins of two iconic League champions—and the power that will tear them apart. In addition, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Leslie Iwerks serves up League of Legends Origins, a feature-length documentary that explores the rise of LoL and the community that made LoL one of the most-played PC games in history and fastest growing sports in the world.
