Riot Games is using the ten-year anniversary of League of Legends to announce plans that could change the balance of esports, with new titles in development across the spectrum of genres, along with new content and platform plans. In addition to updates for the core League of Legends game, the company announced that autobattler, Teamfight Tactics, is coming to mobile in Q1 2020 as well as the company’s entry into the card genre via Legends of Runeterra, a free-to-play strategy card game set in the world of LoL. Meanwhile, League of Legends: Wild Rift will serve as a new 5v5 MOBA for mobile and console. Looking ahead, the publisher also revealed Project A, a “stylish, competitive, character-based tactical shooter for PC,” that is set on a beautiful near-future Earth and has a lethal cast of characters, each with unique abilities that create tactical opportunities for their gunplay to shine. More information to be revealed in 2020. Project L will become a fighting game set in the LoL Universe and Project F serves as a temporary name for a very early development MMO project that explores the possibilities of traversing the world of Runeterra with friends. Finally, Riot Games revealed release plans for LoL Esports Manager, offering players a opportunity to create and run their own versions of professional League of Legends teams.
On the content side, the company announced Arcane, a League of Legends animated series developed and produced by Riot Games releasing in 2020. Set in utopian Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun, the story follows the origins of two iconic League champions—and the power that will tear them apart. In addition, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Leslie Iwerks serves up League of Legends Origins, a feature-length documentary that explores the rise of LoL and the community that made LoL one of the most-played PC games in history and fastest growing sports in the world.
Speaking of League of Legends, Worlds 2019 is off to a rousing start, as preliminary rounds are up among peak and average viewers worldwide, as well as the hours watched, according to Esports Charts, notching 986,000 peak viewers, and topping by 37% the 719,000 it nabbed for the round in 2018. Hours watched are also up 33%. Among average viewers, play is averaging 501,000, up 81,000 over last year.
DreamHack’s return to Atlanta from Nov. 15-17 at the Georgia World Congress Center will offer competitors nearly $1.5 million in pro esports tournaments in partnership with Monster, Twitch, Chipotle, AT&T and Hi-Rez Studios. Tournaments are set to include the Hi-Rez Expo ($1.1 million featuring the SMITE and Paladins World Championships), the DreamHack Open (CS:GO), Fighting Game Championships, the DreamHack Halo Series, Madden NFL 20, the Magic Championship, and the DreamHack Boost Cup, along with collegiate tournaments and high school tournaments.
The Electronic Gaming Federation, a host of elite level national high school esports tournaments, is bringing Dota 2 and FIFA tournaments to the first Player Omega event in Pomona on Nov. 9-10. “We’re happy to join other tournament organizers to bring the best of our tournament experience to esports elite in California,” stated Tyler Schrodt, CEO of EGF. “Just as EGF member high school teams across the country are battling each week in Season V to qualify for our EGF High School National Championship at Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando in June, this is a taste of that championship experience for gamers on the west coast.”
Meanwhile, Player Omega also firmed up Nerd Street Gamers as a partner, and will host a National Championship Series Minor for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive at the inaugural event on November 9-10 at the Fairplex in Pomona. The NCS Minor for CS:GO will feature no more than 16 teams featuring some of the top-ranked players on the amateur esports circuit. Player Omega will also partner with Nerd Street Gamers across its unannounced 10-stop 2020 tour, with National Championship Series events at each stop. More details about the 2020 events will be shared at a later date. “Nerd Street Gamers has always put players first so they were a must to join us for our first event and to be a tour partner in 2020,” Player Omega CEO Jon Bukosky said. “We want to reach every skill level at Player Omega, and NCS hosting CS:GO and Apex Legends tournaments is a significant offering for competitive players.”
The Malta Football Association locked in a partnership with EA to launch the Malta BOV ePremier League, which will serve as an official qualifier for the EA Sports FIFA 20 Global Series. “EA Sports FIFA is one of the most popular video games worldwide and we’re very pleased to team up with Electronic Arts in this partnership which will lead to the creation of the first Malta BOV ePremier League,” said Dr Matthew Paris, VP of Malta FA. “Our partnership with Electronic Arts will provides some unique opportunities for local esports players and Maltese clubs, putting them on the global EA Sports FIFA map with all the potential benefits this will bring.”
Nerd Street Gamers entered into a partnership with Philly-based retailer Five Below to expand Localhost nationwide with Five Below leading its $12 million Series A financing round. They were joined by existing investors Comcast, SeventySix Capital, Elevate Capital, and angel investor George Miller. As part of the deal, Five Below and Nerd Street Gamers will build 3,000 square foot Localhost spaces connected to select Five Below stores beginning with a multi-store pilot in 2020. Rollout plans could include 70 or more locations over the next several years. In addition to the Localhosts connected to Five Below stores, Nerd Street Gamers plans to build 50 larger regional and university-based facilities.
The Red Bull Mobile Esports Open is back for a second season, with an eye “go bigger and better.” The event is already underway with Brawl Stars and Clash Royale from publisher Supercell returning for the tournament. In addition, Blizzard’s fast-paced Hearthstone makes its Red Bull M.E.O. debut. Red Bull has also teamed up with two new partners for M.E.O. Season 2- FACEIT and Paysafecard.
Last Sunday, Fortnite released an innovative marketing campaign tied to routine server maintenance, effectively shutting down the game to drive demand. The “Ad Campaign About Nothing” drove mainstream attention, with Lady Gaga tweeting, “What’s Fortnight”. ESL is partnering up with LG Electronics in a deal that designates LG as an Official Partner for Season 3 of ESL Mobile Open presented by AT&T. This marks the first-ever phone provider and second sponsor for the ESL Mobile Open in North America. As part of this partnership, finalists for Season 3 will use LG smartphones while competing in the finals at DreamHack Atlanta on Nov. 15. As part of the live broadcast of the Season 3 finals, LG’s newest smartphone, LG G8X ThinQ Dual Screen, will also be featured in a segment called “Hardware Highlight” that will showcase the smartphone.

DreamHack named OMEN by HP as the head partner for DreamHack Open and CORSAIR DreamLeague Season 12, live from DreamHack Rotterdam, Oct. 18-20, 2019. Nerd Street Gamers continues to notch up deals, unveiling a partnership with the MIKE AND IKE brand candies to serve as the Official Partner of the 2020 National Championship series. The National Championship Series serves as a multi-city tournament designed to offer casual gamers and aspiring esports athletes the chance to compete for cash prizes. This year, the contest will expand to 10 cities. Top players will earn the MIKE AND IKE Player of the Month award, marking their performance in the National Championship Series throughout the year. The MIKE AND IKE Brand will also be featured prominently in broadcasts and streams of National Championship Series events and incorporated into custom content across digital and social channels.
G2 Esports announced a strategic partnership with Hdac Technology, a blockchain technology company. As part of the partnership, Hdac will be a jersey sponsor of G2’s CS:GO and PUBG teams and collaborate with G2 to create future content. Additionally, the two companies have future plans to deploy smart integrations at the G2 office and gaming house to enhance player experience through IoT and blockchain technology.
ELEAGUE tied up a partnership with CDW, a provider of technology solutions and services, designed to create enhanced fan experiences across ELEAGUE’s properties on television, digital, social and in-arena. The partnership kicked in for Season 8 of the Rocket League Championship Series and will continue throughout the RLCS competitive calendar and ELEAGUE programming schedule in 2019 and 2020, allowing ELEAGUE to launch “marquee franchise and content moments” for fans. As the Official Arena Partner of ELEAGUE and RLCS, CDW will be implementing the latest gaming PCs and accessories, performing network capacity and speed assessments and designing rooms and spaces for the optimum player and spectator experience. For ELEAGUE specifically, CDW will outfit the brand’s studio and arena with Lenovo’s state-of-the-art Legion gaming PCs and accessories.
Meanwhile, G2 Esports unveiled a partnership with Domino’s revolving around the League of Legends World Championship in Europe. The deal with the German arm of the chain will include a viewing party hosted at G2 Esports’ headquarters on Oct. 18, with a campaign anchored by the slogan ‘#G2 Delivers.’ Domino’s and G2 will provide fans pizza, vouchers, contests and the chance to participate in a scavenger hunt that will reward the winner with a special G2 experience. This unique opportunity is geared towards local Berlin fans and is another step in G2’s mission to appreciate and give back to its local #G2ARMY.

Google will roll out its Stadia Pro subscription for its streaming service on Nov. 19. Founder’s Edition bundles (which include a Stadia controller, ChromeCast Ultra, three months of Pro and a buddy pass to give to a friend) will arrive for customers the same day on a first-preordered, first-shipped basis. The stand-alone version of the Stadia Pro subscription will be available at a later date.
CBS reportedly ordered a new comedy set in the world of esports, issuing a pilot order for the series, according to Variety. The single-camera series, if it moves forward, would follow the story of the recently retired pro basketball star who attempts to try and reconnect with his son by purchasing an esports team. If that sounds familiar, ask Rick Fox, who will serve as executive producer of the series.
Millennial Esports Corp. detailed plans to expand its global esports and motorsport content creation and distribution platform with the acquisition of a controlling stake in leading automotive YouTube channel, LetsGoRacing. The channel has achieved more than 40 million views from fans across the globe who have watched a 270 million minutes of content since 2013. “Adding LetsGoRacing to our pending purchase of DriverDatabase.com has the same intention – expand an engaged and passionate fan base by providing new products and content that blur the lines between esports and motorsports,” Millennial Esports President and CEO, Darren Cox said.
The Call of Duty League got its first official team moniker with its new London franchise announcing that they will be known as the London Royal Ravens. In the announcement, the team stated that “Our goal is to defend the honor of London and become the best team in the entire league, highlighting extraordinary talent with an exciting play style. While we fight for London, we welcome fans from around the world to join us!” The team is owned by ReKT Global, the company behind Rogue.
TSM is going big with League of Legends player Soren “Bjergsen” Bjerg, not only renewing his contract of the longest tenured player in TSM history but also giving him a stake in the team. “It was essential for us to re-sign Bjergsen,” says Andy “Reginald” Dinh, CEO and Founder of TSM. “Not only is he is one of the best players at his position, he is a great leader. Team Liquid is deepening its partnership with German software corporation SAP, which will now include the team’s League of Legends roster. SAP will work with Team Liquid at the League of Legends World Championship where Team Liquid will leverage SAP’s data knowledge by analyzing performances based on in-game data.
More than 5.5 million gamers watched the Fortnite map enter the void this week before the game returned with a new chapter on Tuesday. The marketing initiative subsequently saw hundreds of thousands of people watching a black hole on their screens waiting for what would happen next. The Fortnite Blackout, according to Streamhatchet, saw an average of 183,000 concurrent viewers across all platforms, led by Twitch’s 109k. Overall, the period drummed up 1.02 million total hours watched before Chapter 2 kicked in.
Comcast Spectacor and SK Telecom formally opened the doors to T1 Entertainment & Sports, a new global esports joint venture that was announced in February 2019. Joe Marsh was named CEO, where he will oversee global operations based in Seoul, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. The joint venture got the regulatory greenlight for a portfolio that includes the SK Telecom T1 League of Legends Champions Korea (LCK) team. In addition, T1 owns and operates teams that compete in titles such as Fortnite, Dota 2, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, Super Smash Bros., Hearthstone and Apex Legends. New CEO Marsh most recently served as Chief Business Officer for Comcast’s Spectacor Gaming division and the Philadelphia Fusion Overwatch League squad. John Kim, founder of Akshon Media and former CEO of Meta Gaming in Seoul, will become Chief Operating Officer.
Venture capital firm Hiro Capital is open for business, looking to drop $110 million into the esports and games industry, targeting the UK and Europe in particular. The company is reportedly specifically targeting companies in need of Series A and B funding, as opposed to seed finance.
Blizzard Entertainment released a statement that China had “no influence” in its decision to ban a Hong Kong video game player last week after he expressed support for Hong Kong protesters on an official Hearthstone channel. However, the company will now reduce the Ng Wai Chung’s suspension from a year to six months in addition to reinstating his $10,000 in winnings from the contest. “If this had been the opposing viewpoint delivered in the same divisive and deliberate way, we would have felt and acted the same,” said J. Allen Brack, president of Blizzard Entertainment.
Meanwhile, Riot issued their own statement about its approach to the issue, with Global Head of League of Legends Esports John Needham issuing a statement about Riot’s desire to “keep the broadcasts focused on the game, the sport, and the players.” “We serve fans from many countries and cultures,” he wrote. “We believe this opportunity comes with a responsibility to keep personal views on sensitive issues (political, religious, or otherwise) separate. These topics are often incredibly nuanced, require deep understanding and a willingness to listen, and cannot be fairly represented in the forum our broadcast provides. Therefore, we have reminded our casters and pro players to refrain from discussing these topics on air.”
