IN THE NEWS

Facing backlash after the announcement that it was shutting its popular Writers and Directors Workshops amid cutbacks at Warner Bros. Television, WBD moved quickly to change course – and go even bigger on the initiative. Warner Bros. Discovery’s DEI pipeline programs will be now housed with the company’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion unit. The rebranded Warner Bros. Discovery Writers and Directors Workshop will build on the program initiated by WBTV and expand across the entire WBD content portfolio. “Including the Writers and Directors Workshop within the scope of our current DEI pipeline programs, which include development opportunities for music supervisors, comedic voices and showrunners among others, will allow for a broader and more intense DEI focus and yield an even larger pool of cohorts to benefit from the experience and exposure we provide,” said Warner Bros. Discovery DEI US Lead Karen Horne. “We are encouraged by this chance to house this long-standing WBTV effort to impact the industry with emerging talent within the DEI team.”

Netflix has been selected as the top bidder for a 289-acre parcel of land on a former army base in Fort Monmouth, NJ, where the streamer hopes to build a state-of-the-art production facility near the Jersey Shore. “If our plans are approved, we hope to build a facility that will create significant economic impact and job growth for New Jersey, a state loaded with creative talent and technical expertise,” said the company.

TNT has acquired new scripted action thriller, “The Lazarus Project,” with plans to air it in early 2023. Acquired from NBCUniversal Global Distribution on behalf of Sky Studios, the series will be the first new scripted drama to appear on TNT since the April 2022 merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia. “Acquiring the US rights to ‘The Lazarus Project,’ a series that already has a strong following in the UK, gave us a runway to reset TNT’s scripted and unscripted development filters and quickly deliver fresh content for fans of big, scripted drama,” said Kathleen Finch, Chairman and Chief Content Officer, US Networks Group for Warner Bros. Discovery.

The Pac-12 Network is suing Dish Network, claiming Dish withheld payment during the COVID-19 pandemic in violation of its carriage agreement. According to Pac-12 Network, the agreement requires it to provide a certain number of college football games during a season. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Pac-12 Network only aired one game, so offered Dish a rebate. The lawsuit alleges Dish claimed it was entitled to a refund for 2018 and 2019 as well, despite Pac-12 Network’s having provided the agreed upon amount of college football during those seasons. “Dish’s baseless position—that the shortened Pac-12 Conference football season during the 2020-2021 contract year, caused entirely by an unprecedented and unforeseeable global pandemic, allows it to claw back license fees for the two years prior—is contrary to the plain language of the parties’ agreement,” reads the complaint.

Chance the Rapper and former One Direction member Niall Horan join returning coaches Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton for season 23 of NBC’s “The Voice,” for what will be Shelton’s last season. “I’ve been wrestling with this for a while and I’ve decided that it’s time for me to step away from ‘The Voice’ after season 23,” said Shelton, the only original coach still onboard. “This show has changed my life in every way for the better and it will always feel like home to me. It’s been a hell of a ride over these 12 years of chair turns.”

EarthxTV, the Dallas-based television entertainment network dedicated to environmental sustainability has signed distribution deals with Charter Communications and the National Cable Television Cooperative in the US, Sky and Freeview in the UK, and M7 in Europe. TECH

FreeWheel announced the launch of a new, enhanced unified yield set of capabilities for publishers, which includes the ability to give non-guaranteed, programmatic demand the opportunity to compete with “healthy,” direct sold guaranteed deals. “We developed this newly enhanced unified yield capability to address several current industry needs,” Katy Loria, CRO, FreeWheel, tells Cynopsis. “First, as programmatic advertising continues to grow, publishers need fluidity across their sales channels and to be able to boost programmatic demand over guaranteed, while honoring those guarantees. At the same time, we sought to simplify and reduce many of the inefficiencies in the overall TV ad buying process by unlocking new and previously inaccessible sources of premium video ad inventory for programmatic activation.” A+E Networks has adopted FreeWheel’s unified yield solution and seen positive results, including a +35% increase in cost per thousand across replaced impressions, while all guaranteed deals still delivered in full during this period.

Innovid and Fox Corporation are teaming to measure cross-platform viewing consumption across Fox’s portfolio of news, sports, entertainment, and streaming properties. Fox plans to use InnovidXP, Innovid’s cross-platform TV measurement solution, to further accelerate its efforts to unify and facilitate new ways of measuring ad delivery, impact, and performance across its portfolio. “As more viewers engage with content across multiple screens, it remains vital that we continue to work with our ad partners and provide them with the necessary data and insights that further display the value of converged TV and the engaged audiences and concentrated impact FOX delivers,” said Dan Callahan, SVP, Data Strategy & Sales Innovation, Fox. “Our partnership with Innovid is another step forward in expanding and delivering cross-platform measurement solutions that further align with our advertisers’ objectives.” The deal is an expansion of the partnership that Innovid and Tubi, FOX’s streaming service, launched last year.
