Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard is considering boycotting the October 15 debate airing on CNN. In a video to her supporters, Gabbard slammed the Democratic National Committee and the media for “holding ‘so-called’ debates which really are not debates at all, but rather commercialized reality television meant to entertain rather than inform or enlighten.” Gabbard said she will decide in a few days whether to participate in the event.

Speaking of, some Democratic debate stats from the first two events, courtesy of data from 605:
  • 5% of 605 TV Households that watched the first round of debates watched any amount of either night of Democratic Debate #2.
  • 82.2% of 605 TV Households who tuned in either night watched for more than 15 cumulative minutes
  • Households in key swing states (Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin) were 1.03X more likely than the average to tune-in. However, these households were also even likelier to watch the Bachelorette too (1.36X more likely to watch some of both the debate and the Bachelorette, 1.24X more likely to watch exclusively the Bachelorette)
Holly Hunter will play former Attorney General Sally Yates in the CBS Studios event series based on former FBI director James Comey’s book, A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership. “Though I’d never met Holly before, this part was written for her. There was no one else who could play it,” said Billy Ray, who adapted the book and is directing. “In my first phone call with her, I spent 10 minutes just telling her how much I loved her in Broadcast News.” CBS has not announced the when (air dates) or where (Showtime? CBS All Access?) of the miniseries.

HBO is adding mental health awareness notifications ahead of some of its shows and movies, to identify mental illnesses that appear in the episode and provide information on how to get help. HBO has always been at the forefront of telling stories featuring complex characters, some of whom deal with mental illness, from The Sopranos to Euphoria, encouraging more conversation around the different facets of mental health,” said Jason Mulderig, VP of Brand & Product Marketing at HBO. “We are not saying ‘viewer discretion is advised.’ We are saying ‘viewer conversation is encouraged.’” The disclaimers are part of HBO’s “It’s OK” initiative, aimed at destigmatizing mental.

In another initiative to help viewers – in this case the pint-sized variety – Sesame Street has muppet Karli tackling the issue of her mother’s addiction during the show’s 50th season. The story is part of the Sesame Street in Communities project, which also offers materials to providers to help them discuss addiction with children.

The wrongful death case against AMC brought by the family of late The Walking Dead stuntman John Bernecker will go forward to trial, ruled a Georgia judge. Bernacker suffered fatal injuries in a stunt fall in 2017. “This was a tragic accident,” said AMC after the ruling. “While we continue to believe our motions for summary judgment were appropriate and supported by the facts in this case and the law, we respect the Court’s decision – without making any determination on the merits of either side’s arguments – to allow the case to proceed.”

The new version of OpenAP, the advanced audience targeting platform owned by Fox Corporation, NBCUniversal and Viacom, is now open to all advertisers. OpenAP Market is an open marketplace with premium video advertising inventory and audience-based buying across linear and digital TV programming. “Two years ago, OpenAP was founded on the thesis that the only way for advanced advertising to truly scale was for TV networks to come together and collaborate to create new standards that would push our industry forward,” said OpenAP CEO David Levy. “This launch marks a significant milestone that we believe will fundamentally change the way TV advertising is bought and sold.” WarnerMedia pulled out of the consortium due to its acquisition of Xandr home AT&T.

Hulu has told advertisers it is moving to a first-price auction for its programmatic private marketplace, starting next week. “Hulu’s invite-only auction gives advertisers more control over their automated buys, and with this change, advertisers will now pay the actual price they bid,” said Hulu. “By moving to a first-price auction, we’re cutting down on complicated rules, increasing transparency in the value exchange and giving advertisers even more control over their buys.”

Google is rolling out a feature in Display & Video 360 that uses machine learning to help advertisers manage ad frequency in a way that respects user privacy when third-party cookies are missing, with plans to bring the capability to its display offerings in Google Ads. “Using traffic patterns where a third-party cookie is available, and analyzing them at an aggregated level across Google Ad Manager publishers, we can create models to predict traffic patterns when a third-party cookie isn’t present,” said Rahul Srinivasan, Product Manager, Ads Privacy, in a blog post. “This allows us to estimate how likely it is for users to visit different publishers who are serving the same ads through Google Ad Manager. Then, when there is no third-party cookie present, we’re able to optimize how often those ads should be shown to users.”
