The NFL is serving up a double bill tonight as the postponed Patriots/Chiefs Week 4 game was moved to tonight, taking place at 7:05p on CBS, following positives COVID-19 tests for players on both teams. As a result, the Falcons/Packers MNF game on ESPN will now begin at 8:50p. “Further testing of players and personnel on both teams returned no new positives from Saturday and Sunday testing,” the league said in a statement. “The clubs also worked closely with the NFL and NFLPA and infectious disease experts to conduct contact tracing and post-COVID exposure protocols are now in effect for both teams.” Meanwhile, the matchup between the Steelers and Titans will now take place on Oct. 25 at 1p after an outbreak within the Titans organization. To make this possible, the Steelers’ game against the Ravens, which was originally set for Week 7, has been moved to Week 8, which had been the bye week for both the Steelers and Ravens.
PROGRAMMING
The pandemic is also prompting ESPN Events to cancel two of its 17 postseason college football bowl games for the 2020 season in the Bahamas Bowl and the Hawaii Bowl. Both of which were slated to take place in December. “We are disappointed that we aren’t able to stage events at these premier destinations this year,” said Pete Derzis, ESPN senior vice president of college sports programming & ESPN Events. “We are committed to bringing both games back in 2021, and we thank our conference partners, sponsors and the local communities for their ongoing support and understanding.”
The Pac-12 unveiled its abbreviated its 2020 football schedule, which features a seven-game conference-only lineup that kicks on Nov. 7 and runs through the weekend of December 18-19 with the Pac-12 Football Championship Game. Each team will play five divisional games and one crossover game against a non-division opponent, with these six games being evenly distributed between home and away for each team. The seventh and final week will feature all twelve teams in action highlighted by the Pac-12 Football Championship Game, presented by 76, on Dec. 18, which this year will take place in a home-hosted format. The schedule includes eight Friday games along with the Championship Game set to take place on a Friday evening. Every football game through the first 6 weeks of the season will be televised nationally by a combination of ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, Fox and FS1. Fox will televise the Football Championship game on Dec. 18.
On a related note, FOX Sports celebrates the return of Pac-12 football with the first ever West Coast Big Noon Saturday game of the week when USC hosts Arizona State on Nov. 7 with pregame show featuring USC legends Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart with Urban Meyer, Brady Quinn and host Rob Stone, originating from Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum that morning at 10a on FOX.
Wrapping up the football news, CBS Sports announced its college football Saturday showcase for Oct. 10 at 3:30p and will feature the SEC on CBS matchup between Georgia/Tennessee. Brad Nessler, Gary Danielson and reporter Jamie Erdahl will call the action from Sanford Stadium in Athens, Ga.
The New York Rangers hold the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, which will air on NBCSN tomorrow at 7p with top prospect Alexis Lafreniere (Canada) headlining the incoming class of future NHL stars. FOX Sports and The Spring League announced an extensive, multi-year agreement to televise TSL games beginning Oct. 27 and running weekdays on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings on FS1. As part of the agreement, FOX Sports also secures an option to acquire a minority equity stake in TSL. “As we’ve said time and time again, FOX is football. We’re excited to add TSL to our already robust football programming lineup complementing our NFL and college football coverage,” said Mark Silverman, President, National Networks, FOX Sports. “We believe in TSL’s mission as a developmental league and we are excited to grow with them in partnership over the coming years.”
Major League Baseball and TBS announced start times for the remainder of the ALDS. Following TBS’s ALDS Game 1 doubleheader coverage today, beginning at 3:30p, the network’s Game 2 coverage on Tuesday will start with pregame studio coverage at 4p, followed by the Houston Astros vs. Oakland Athletics at 4:30p, the New York Yankees vs. Tampa Bay Rays at 8p, and postgame studio coverage following New York/Tampa Bay.
MLB Network revealed coverage details for its two exclusive game telecasts of the National League Division Series presented by Doosan. Matt Vasgersian, Jim Kaat, Buck Showalter and reporter Tom Verducci will be on the call for MLB Network’s telecast of NLDS Game 2 featuring the Miami Marlins against the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday at 2:08p.
