Rich Media: In online advertising, a rich media ad is a webpage ad that uses advanced web technology. That can include streaming video, ads that change when a user’s mouse passes over them, or downloaded applets that interact instantly with the user.

TOP NEWS

Twitter has opened Moments to the public. The feature, which creates slideshows out of tweets related to recent news and pop culture events, had been curated only by Twitter (and sometimes by select advertisers and publishers) since debuting last October. Now everyday users — along with all brand and publishers — can produce their own Moments slideshows. Twitter’s announcement that it intended to make Moments widely available initially came last month.

For a once-canceled series, The Mindy Project is doing pretty well for itself. The sitcom, which has aired on Hulu since its 2015 termination by Fox, just clinched a major syndication deal. Episodes from all five seasons of the series will air on Viacom‘s VH1 and Disney‘s Freeform. The arrangement comes as part of a pact with NBCUniversal Television and New Media Distribution. Hulu will still retain full SVOD rights to all five seasons. Season 5 debuts October 4; VH1 and Freeform will begin airing past episodes the same month.

BRANDED CONTENT

Time Inc. keeps on devoting resources to video content. In a new deal with digital comedy network Jash, Time Inc. creative lab The Foundry will create comic projects for advertisers. According to Time Inc. exec Erik Moreno, the project will take the form of "a new content vertical" for clients.

PLATFORMS + DEVICES

The Holiday season isn’t all that far off, and some of the major connected TV device manufacturers seem to have noticed. The same week that Roku announced major updates to its line of streaming devices, Amazon is making its own upgrades. The company is improving its Fire TV Stick, adding a voice-responsive remote control and a more powerful processor. The stick call can’t stream 4K video (Amazon loyalists will need the Fire TV set-top box for that), and the price will remain at $39.99. It debuts October 20.

LIVE VIDEO

According to Nielsen, Monday’s presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump raked in 84 million sets of TV eyeballs — the largest debate audience in American history. But those numbers don’t even tell the whole story: YouTube says that it received nearly 2 million live concurrent views, which is a record for a live-streamed political event. And CBS‘s CBSN digital news service says that said it garnered 1.4 million unique views. Other platforms got in on the streaming game as well, though some of them — including Facebook and Twitter — haven’t released unique viewership metrics yet.

OTT + SVOD

Alpha, the upcoming SVOD service from Legendary Digital Networks, now has a launch date. The platform, initially announced in June, combines fantasy, sci-fi, gaming, and comedy programming from the Nerdist and Geek & Sundry brands. It’ll debut on November 3 – though users who sign up at alphainvite.com can get early access starting October 3. LDN is pricing Alpha at $4.99 per month.

AUDIO

According to a report from the Financial Times, Spotify is deep into talks to acquire rival music streaming service SoundCloud. Spotify and SoundCloud haven’t commented publicly on the report. The Financial Times writes that an announcement of the acquisition might be made soon.

Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming from Sept. 21-27 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Insights from the 11,373,827 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– 59% of people who said they just saw something crazy on TV were tuned into, you guessed it, the first Presidential Debate, simulcast across multiple networks.
– 10.3% of viewers who said they saw something ‘badass’ on TV were watching ABC, with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. the biggest driver of the network’s badassery.
Fox brought the beauty, delivering 5.6% of all beautiful reactions among viewers across networks, driven mostly by the return of Empire.
– 8.8% of viewers who said what they were watching on TV made them happy were watching ABC, with nearly half of that happiness driven by the return of Grey’s Anatomy.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

YouTube looks set to take itself very, very seriously as a music platform. Google‘s video giant has hired industry vet Lyor Cohen as Global Head of Music. Cohen formerly served as CEO of Warner Music Group, one of the three major music labels. The hire is a clear signal that YouTube would like to mend its sometimes-testy relations with the music industry, which has accused the site of failing to combat piracy. "I hope that together we can move toward a more collaborative relationship between the music industry and the technologies that are shaping the future of the business," wrote Cohen in a memo to the YouTube music team.

Video advertising software company Tremor Video has named Jennifer Catto as its new Chief Marketing Officer. Catto joins Tremor from Evolve Media, where she served as SVP of Integrated Marketing. As CMO, Catto will oversee Tremor’s marketing, communications, and research. She’ll report directly to Tremor CEO Bill Day.

Redbox has a new CEO. Galen Smith, the CFO of Redbox parent Outwerwall, will take the helm at the DVD kiosk operator just as the company is testing a new digital video-on-demand product. (Called Redbox Digital, the service will focus on transactional VOD and EST.) Out is Erik Prusch, who had been CEO. The moves come just as Outerwall has completed a $1.6 billion deal to be taken private by the hedge fund Apollo Global Management.
