The Hillary Clinton versus Donald Trump faceoff on Monday night was the highest-rated presidential debate in television history, garnering 81 million viewers. The total does not include PBS or C-Span, whose numbers are typically not included in those issued to commercial networks. Viewing also does not include people who watched outside their homes or online, which would drive up numbers significantly. The final tally is sure to surpass previous record holder: Ronald Reagan’s sole 1980 debate with Jimmy Carter, which garnered 81 million.
Ten years after ending its NBC run, Will & Grace returned Monday with a 9-minute video tied to the 2016 presidential campaign. Eric McCormack and Debra Messing were back as the title characters with Megan Mullally and Sean Hayes reprising their roles as Karen and Jack McFarland. The show’s main set – Will and Grace’s New York apartment was re-created for the moment. The four stars teased the reunion Sunday on social media, while the new clip was posted on YouTube today via the account “Vote Honey.”
The Strain will return for a fourth and final season in summer 2017 as Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan bring the thriller to its conclusion. Ending the series was a creative decision made by the producers, according to a statement released on Tuesday by Nick Grad and Eric Schrier,Presidents of Original Programming for FX Networks and FX Productions. Cuse added that the “original plan was for the series to last three years. Once we began telling that story, it expanded to be more.”
Starz is offering a free sample of Ash vs Evil Dead’s season two premiere episode, which began on Tuesday exclusively on IGN’s Facebook page. The preview comes in advance of the show’s premiere on Sunday, October 2 at 8p. A free multiplatform, nationwide sampling of the episode in its entirety will also be available online at Starz.com and through participating U.S. cable, satellite and Telco affiliates as well as participating OTT partners beginning Wednesday, September 28 at 12:01a through October 9. The episode will also be available to Starz subscribers via the Starz app and Starz On Demand.
The 71st Annual Tony Awards will be broadcast live from New York City on Sunday, June 11, 2017 at 8p on CBS. The ceremony, which honors theater professionals, has been broadcast on the network since 1978. Nominations will be announced on Tuesday, May 2, 2017.
The Television Academy announced the recipients of the 68th Engineering Emmy Awards, honoring development and innovation in broadcast technology. Liberty Media chairman John C. Malone will receive the Charles F. Jenkins Lifetime Achievement Award, which recognizes an individual “whose ongoing contributions have significantly affected the state of television technology and engineering.”
For the 17th consecutive year, Working Mother magazine named Discovery Communications as one of the “Working Mother 100 Best Companies” for its outstanding leadership in creating progressive programs for its workforce in the areas of advancement of women, flexibility, child care and paid parental leave. The 100 Best Companies are featured in the magazine’s October/November issue.
National Geographic Channel has launched a nationwide college campus tour for its new film Before the Flood to raise awareness during this election year about the need to address climate change. Directed by Fisher Stevens and produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, the film will tour at least 50 college campuses. The announcement coincides with National Voter Registration Day, a national effort to engage Americans to exercise their right to vote.
Viking Chronicles bows on Outdoor Channel on Wednesday, September 28 at 8:30p. The outdoor adventure series documents Kyle Lamb as he traverses North America and the globe.
Explorer returns to National Geographic Channel in a reimagined format on Friday, November 14 at 10p. Hosted by Richard Bacon, the documentary mixes field pieces, roundtable discussions and in-depth interviews. This new evolution of the series will air on a weekly basis on National Geographic Channel and in Spanish on Nat Geo Mundo.
The fourth season of Family Time debuts Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 9p on Bounce TV. The comedy chronicles the lives of the Stallworth family, headed by struggling general contractor Tony and his wife Lisa.
Lifetime is dedicating a full night of programming to mark the 20th anniversary of the day JonBenet Ramsey died. In addition to previously announced scripted TV movie Who Killed JonBenet?, the network has added two-hour documentary special, JonBenet’s Mother: Victim or Killer, that turns the lens on Patsy Ramsey, the person some believe killed the six-year-old beauty queen. Movie bows Saturday, November 5 at 8p followed by the documentary at 10p
Getting Ahead, a one-hour documentary from Tavis Smiley and WNET, airs Friday, October 7 at 9 p on PBS. (Check local listings.) The special reports on the consequences of the “Fight for Fifteen” for both wage earners and small business owners in California, the first state to raise the minimum wage.
Justin Timberlake + Tennessee Kids debuts Wednesday, October 12 on Netflix. The special features Timberlake’s20/20ExperienceWorld Tourand includesthe final show at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena.
DJ Khaled hosts the 2016 BET Hip Hop Awards on Tuesday, October 4 at 8p on BET. Entertainment icon Snoop Dogg will receive the “I am Hip Hop” award for 20-plus years of hits in music, television and film. Performances are slated to include Travis Scott, Lil Yachty, T.I., Gucci Mane, Young Thug, Desiigner, Young M.A., Lil’ Wayne and Kevin Hart.
In other BET news, The New Edition Story will air over three nights from Tuesday, January 24 through Wednesday, January 26. The six-hour event series follows the R&B boy band from their beginnings in Boston to global stardom.

AIM Tell-A-Vision Group’s syndicated television series Raw Travel debuts its fourth season this weekend in 159 cities, including 97 of the largest 100 U.S. markets. With an affiliate list that represents 105 million and 93 percent of all U.S. TV homes, the Season 4 (2016-17) debut represents the fourth straight year of growth for the independent adventure travel show.
Amazon ordered three series comedies: I Love Dick, Jean-Claude Van Johnson and The Tick. The trio will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in 2017 in the U.S., UK, Germany, Austria and Japan.
Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter have partnered with YouTube to exclusively live stream next month’s 6th Annual Streamy Awards. Vubiquity signed a deal with DCD Rights to bring Australian drama The Code to the Middle East, Africa, and Southeast Europe, including first-run rights for Season 2 in Israel. Series follows two brothers as they seek to uncover the truth behind a remote car crashthat killed two Aboriginal teenagers.
Sonar Entertainment teamed with Germany’s Bavaria Fernsehproduktion and Sky Deutschland to co-produce and distribute Das Boot. Sonar holds all global distribution rights to the series, with the exception of Sky’s five European territories, Germany, Austria, U.K., Ireland and Italy. The production is set immediately after the events of Wolfgang Petersen‘s 1981 anti-war film. Production begins in 2017 to air worldwide in 2018.
9 Story Media Group secured multiple international sales for animated series Nature Cat. New licenses include SVT (Sweden), TG4 (Ireland), SIC (Portugal), Canal Panda (Spain), Nick Jr (Italy) via Funwood Media, E Junior (Middle East), and Hop TV (Israel). The series premiered in November 2015 on PBS KIDS in the U.S. and on Family CHRGD in Canada this past July.
Public broadcaster Russia 1 commissioned seven prime time episodes of The Brain from Endemol Shine Group.The deal marks the eighth launch for The Brain, which following the debut in Germany has been produced in U.S, China, Brazil, Spain, Italy and France.
Australians in Film (AiF), a Los Angeles based non-profit organization that supports and promotes the Australian screen industry in Hollywood, and Qantas announced a major partnership. Qantas will be the Title Sponsor of the fifth annual AiF Awards on Wednesday, October 19 at NeueHouse in Hollywood. The top award of the night, presented to an Australian who has paved the way for others in Hollywood, has been renamed the Qantas Orry-Kelly Award. Orry-Kelly was a costume designer on Casablanca and Some Like it Hot and one of Australia’s most awarded film exports.
Turner’s Cartoon Network unveiled its first partners for The Powerpuff Girls. The EMEA merchandise roll-out kicks off with global toy partner Spin Master, who will launch its innovative toy range spanning plush, figures and playsets, dolls, role play and novelty items in spring 2017. A line-up of fashion, accessories, gifting, homewares, personal care, FMCG and back-to-school products will follow closely thereafter.
Entertainment One is expanding its consumer products offerings for series PJ Masks, which airs on Disney Channel and Disney Junior in the U.S. Among those developing products in support of the brand are Happy Threads as apparel partner, toy licensee Just Play and Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing. 60 Minutes began its 49th season making Nielsen’s Top 10, as it did 22 times last season. The CBS News magazine drew 14.36 million viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Sunday, September 25, finishing at #7 in premiere week. The broadcast also made the Nielsen Top 10 list in households, scoring an 8.9 rating and 15 share, placing #6 for the week.
Telemundo ranked as the #1 Spanish-language network Monday through Friday primetime among A18-49 for the tenth consecutive week, according to Nielsen. Fueled by the success of new lineup – Silvana Sin Lana, Sin Senos Si Hay Paraiso and Senora Acero 3, La Coyote the network delivered 876,000 A18-49. For the week of September 19, Telemundo also ranked as the #1 Spanish-language network among A18-34 during primetime with 413,000 viewers.
Dr. Phil (3.8 live plus same day national Nielsen, up 41 percent from the week before) began season 15 on a high note in the session ending September 18, hitting his best rating since November 2014 and topping the talk shows by a wide margin.Compared to his season premiere week a year ago, the talker shot up 23 percent with an exclusive interview with the brother of JonBenet Ramsey.
Harry (series premiere week 1.4), this season’s only nationally cleared newcomer, had the strongest debut of any talk show in three years, outperforming The Real in 2014 by 40 percent. Comparing the rookie to already established talkers, Harry tied Maury (1.4, unchanged), which has been on the air since 1991.
Judge Judy (7.0, up 3 percent) banged her gavel on season 21, jumping 6 percent from last year’s opener and ranking as the #1 strip in syndication overall for the seventh consecutive week.Second place Family Feud (6.3, up 2 percent) kick-started its new season, beating all game shows for the 21st straight week.
FOX Business Network (FBN) ended the third quarter with its highest ratings ever, narrowing the gap with CNBC to its smallest in history, according to Nielsen Media Research. The network’s Lou Dobbs Tonight and Varney & Co finished as the top two business news programs in cable, the first time FBN achieved the two highest rated timeslots in business news for an entire quarter. Varney & Co averaged 193,00 total viewers, while Lou Dobbs averaged 251,000.
Among metered market audiences, courtroom series Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court outperformed its year ago premiere week by 16 percent with homes and beat September 2015 performance by 28 percent in homes, 14 percent in A25-54 and 10 percent in women 25-54. The 1st week of the show’s new season averaged a 1.41/2 rating/share with Households.
