IN THE NEWS

Paramount Network makes its official debut on Thursday, January 18 at 9p, with a live one-hour episode of Lip Sync Battle. Rebranded from Spike TV, the Viacom net promises stories that are “immersive, inclusive and deeply personal.” Later in January comes the premiere of WACO, a series based on the true story of the 1993 FBI siege of a religious sect.

Fox’s live production of Rent isn’t due until January 27, 2019, sandwiched on the Sunday between the NFL Conference Championship and the Super Bowl. The smash musical ran on Broadway from 1996-2008.

Raycom Media and Community Newspaper Holdings have agreed to merge. Raycom owns or operates 65 television and 2 radio stations in 20 states, while CNH owns over 110 newspapers, web sites and niche publications in 22 states. The merger, expected to be completed on September 29, would create one of the country’s largest privately-owned media groups.

Veteran NBC sportscaster Bob Costas was among the many who weighed in on the weekend’s controversy over the 200+ NFL players who knelt during the national anthem to protest police brutality. The surge in participants came after President Trump urged owners to fire players who wouldn’t stand. “This is no disrespect to the military,” said Costas on CNN’s New Day. “Martin Luther King was a patriot, Susan B. Anthony was a patriot. Dissidents are patriots.” On the flip side, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told ABC’s This Week, “It’s not about race. It’s not about free speech. They can do free speech on their own time.”

What do you think about athletes kneeling during the national anthem? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

Operation Puerto Rico Care-Lift, launched by Discovery’s Lara Richardson, and 2C Creative’s Chris Sloan and Carla Kaufman Sloan, had as of yesterday generated $30,000 in cash and supplies for victims of Hurricane Maria. On Friday, a plane will deliver supplies to the devastated island. Supplies can be brought by Thursday to 2C’s Miami office (305-672-8229), or funds donated on the Operation Puerto Rico Care-Life GoFundMe page.

FX Networks added 15 additional FX original series to its new ad-free FX+ service, for a total of 31 series. FX+ is available to Comcast Infinity TV customers, and will be available to Cox Contour subscribers for an extra $5.99/month starting in October. FX Networks is the first basic cable group to offer every season of almost every title in its original series library.

Gianni Caldwell is joining the roster of analysts on Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network. The Republican political analyst made a splash during a post-Charlottesville guest appearance when he said, “Mr. President, good people don’t pal around with Nazis and white supremacists.” Caldwell, who worked on Mitt Romney’s campaign, will continue as special correspondent at Extra TV

Game of Thrones grabbed the top spot in a Rotten Tomatoes poll asking fans what the best show was over the last 20 years. The HBO drama earned 11% of the vote. Rounding out the top 5 were Breaking Bad, The Big Bang Theory, Friends and Seinfeld.

She “is kind of done with politics for now,” Megyn Kelly told her first Today audience yesterday morning. “Some fun – that’s what we want to be doing.” Instead of tough talk, the former Fox News host, who famously tangled with Donald Trump during the presidential campaign, passed out mimosas and hosted the cast of NBC’s upcoming Will & Grace. Inspiring pieces are also part of the recipe – Kelly visited Chicago to report on a 77-year-old nun working to improve a rough neighborhood.

ADVERTISING

“Digital advertising is having a moment,” said analyst Brian Wieser in a new report, “and not a good one.” Beyond ad quality issues of viewability, brand safety, fraud and bots, all of which Wieser deems “relatively manageable,” is the fear that marketers will concern themselves with the trustworthiness of media owners, the ability to use personal data, and the general effectiveness of digital media. In the wake of Facebook’s recent issues, “Whether a collection of media and creative choices are actually the most effective is a subjective question, even in a world awash with data, which is why marketer trust matters,” said Wieser.

With advertisers increasingly calling for transparency and proof of purchase – and just in time for advertising week – Simulmedia expanded its partnership with Neustar to have Neustar’s MarketShare independently verify the results of Simulmedia TV campaigns. The goal is to give advertisers an accurate measure of ads’ impact on sales.

A new study from Adobe found that 38% of advertising execs plan to increase their programmatic spending, with 62% of that group saying the goal is to reach a more targeted audience. Of the ad execs already using programmatic, 84% said they would be likely to increase programmatic spending if they had access to first party data targeting.

Software provider Mediaocean and programmatic TV ad platform AdMore are partnering to integrate AdMore within Mediaocean’s media management platform, Spectra. The alliance allows an “unwired” network to be purchased in Mediaocean’s National Media workflow.

At its second annual BrandFront presentation yesterday, Meredith Corp. unveiled its 2018 slate of original cross-platform programming and video content to advertisers and marketers. The theme: “The Year of Doing,” with content pillars Form Good Habits, Start Something New and Fuel Your Passion. In addition to 12 new cross-platform initiatives, Meredith announced a new live video series with Rachael Ray; a new travel and fitness TV show with trainer Rebecca Kennedy; and shared results of a new accountability study form the pharma category. “The Year of Doing, and the various cross-platform initiatives that comprise it, speaks to a major evolution in consumer mindset calling for a return to the fundamentals of happiness, a wish to regain control, and a desire to make things happen,” said Jon Werther, national media group president.
