IN THE NEWS

Much-admired television executive David Lyle died September 22 after a long battle with cancer. He was 67. The one-time geologist and high school chemistry teacher went on to what he said at the time was a “dream job” as CEO of National Geographic Channels, where shows like Wicked Tuna, Brain Games and Bill O’Reilly’s Killing series were born under his watch. Later, as chairman of PactUs, he led a merger with the Nonfiction Producers Association, to create NPACT. “David Lyle was a rare breed, in our industry and in our world,” said John Ford, GM of NPACT. “A true bon vivant, he brought light and life into every room, along with a passion for the creative of this business.”

Nielsen filed a lawsuit in New York on Friday, seeking an injunction to stop the launch of comScore’s Extended TV. Nielsen claims the service uses Nielsen’s People Meter in violation of an agreement between the companies that “explicitly bars comScore from using PPM data for ‘individual and stand-alone services’ like linear television measurement services,” said the suit, adding that if comScore proceeds with Extended TV, Nielsen would “suffer irreparable harm to its business through loss of important customers and decreased market share.” ComScore released a statement saying it plans to “vigorously contest Nielsen’s actions,” adding that it believes its contracts with Nielsen require matters to be resolved through arbitration.

Showtime snatched the rights to adapt to series the upcoming novel The President Is Missing, by President Bill Clinton and bestselling author James Patterson. The thriller, arriving in 2018, tells the story of the disappearance of a sitting U.S. president. “Bringing The President Is Missing to Showtime is a coup of the highest order,” said David Nevins, president and CEO, Showtime Networks, promising “a kinetic experience, one that the book world has salivated over for months and that now will dovetail perfectly into a politically relevant, character-based action series for our network.”

The background drawing of a penis that forced Netflix to pull an episode of kids’ show Maya the Bee was an artist’s “very bad joke,” explained production company Studio 100, adding that legal action has “already been started” as technical measures are being taken to remedy the situation.

WAPA America, the U.S. cable arm of the Puerto Rican broadcast net, is making its signal available to all U.S. residents free of charge as it covers Hurricane Maria’s aftermath. The network, which is available on the Hispanic program packages of every major cable, satellite and telco provider in the U.S., is also available for free live streaming on WAPA.tv.

CBS’s The Price Is Right gave away a record $80,000 on the Wheel last week. It wasn’t just luck – in honor of Drew Carey’s 10th anniversary as host, contestants got hefty bonuses if they spun $1.

Some details about NBC’s Will & Grace revival were spilled at the Tribeca TV festival over the weekend. For starters, the reboot won’t pick up where the 2006 finale left off, with Will and Grace parents of grown children (by other people). Shelley Morrison won’t be playing Karen’s maid, Rosario, because the actress has retired. And no more “Just Jack” from Sean Hayes’ character – “I got sick of it for him,” said series co-creator Max Mutchnick. And Will (Eric McCormack) will have a much younger boyfriend. As for Vince, who Will ended up with in the finale? Bobby Cannavale “is magnificent – and expensive and booked,” said McCormack. Cannavale will, however, make a guest appearance. W&G is back Thursday, September 28 at 9p.

Speaking of, Cozi TV, NBCUni’s national multicast network, will be the exclusive digital broadcast network home for the first 8 seasons of Will & Grace. Leading up to launch of the new season on NBC, Cozi will offer the first 4 episodes of season 1 at 7p. W&G will run on Cozi weekdays at 10p starting October 2, after a weekend marathon starting Saturday, September 30 at 9a. Last week, Hulu struck a streaming deal for the red-hot show.
