ESPN locked in Capital One to take on title sponsorship of the Orange Bowl in a multi-year deal, starting this year. The Capital One Orange Bowl will be played on December 31 and “builds on Capital One’s substantial support of college athletics by becoming the official credit card and bank of the new College Football Playoff.”

”As a major supporter of college sports for over a decade, Capital One is excited to be the title sponsor of the Orange Bowl, especially as this legendary bowl game takes on even greater significance with the College Football Playoff,” said Marc Mentry, Senior Vice President Brand Marketing at Capital One. “Like millions of other fans, we’re looking forward to seeing incredible competition and drama play out during this new chapter of college football.”

ON THE AIR

NBCUniversal’s Hispanic cable channel mun2 will now carry the NFL in Spanish; lining up a package includes the broadcast of the primetime Saints/Cowboys Hispanic Heritage Game in Arlington, Texas, on Sept. 28, as well as the NFL’s Thanksgiving night game on Nov. 27. In addition, mun2 will feature both a Wild Card game and a Divisional Playoff game followed by the exclusive Spanish-language telecast of Super Bowl XLIX on Feb. 1, 2015.

Sunday’s national doubleheader coverage of the NFL on CBS, anchored by a Super Bowl rematch between Denver/Seattle, ranked as the highest-rated NFL game of the weekend on any network, according to the network. The contest earned an average Nielsen household rating/share of 16.9/32, and was up 16% from last year’s 14.6/28. Early regional coverage earned an average HH rating/share of 11.1/24, up 44% from last year’s 7.7/16.

Speaking of CBS, the company announced its SEC on CBS football game for Saturday, Oct. 4 at 3:30p, selecting Alabama/Ole Miss. Verne Lundquist, Gary Danielson and reporter Allie LaForce have the call.

ESPN added two additional MLB Postseason Impact Games to its lineup. Tonight, the channel will spotlight Orioles/Yankees at 7p with Jon Sciambi offering commentary with analyst Rick Sutcliffe and reporter Doug Glanville. That will be followed by Giants/Dodgers at 10p on the network. Dan Shulman, analysts John Kruk and Curt Schilling, and reporter Buster Olney call the action.

Golf Channel’s next installment of its Legendary Conversation series runs tonight at 9p with a spotlight on Sir Nick Faldo and Paul Azinger. Hosted and moderated by Rich Lerner, the one-hour episode examines “the news and stories that have made the modern Ryder Cup one of the world’s must-watch sporting events, and what has made the competition a true rivalry since Europe joined in 1979.”

FIFA Executive Committee member Theo Zwanziger told Sports Bild that he doubts the 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar due to the extreme heat, according to Reuters. "Medics say that they cannot accept responsibility with a World Cup taking place under these conditions," he said.

BTN is set to carry 27 games from the Big Ten’s second season, including the Hockey City Classic and the entire Big Ten Hockey Tournament, which is set for March 19-21 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The action begins with Bemidji State/Minnesota at 9p on Oct. 24. Coverage includes eight straight weeks of “Frozen Friday” matchups beginning Jan. 9, and additional games on Thursdays and Saturdays. Postgame highlights and analysis will be included on The Finale, which airs on Fridays and Saturdays throughout the season.
 
El Rey Network is launching Lucha Underground, with Luchadores that include the likes of Chavo Guerrero Jr., "B-Boy" Benny Cuntapay; Cortez Castro and Konnan. Also announced were Dario Cueto (Luis Fernandez) as the Owner and Promoter; Vampiro and Matt Striker as Commentators; and Melissa Santos as the Ring Announcer. The series starts Oct. 29 at 8p.

NFL Network is set to offer Finding Giants starting Sept. 30 at 9p. The four-part series will run each Tuesday through October 21 and offer a look into the New York Giants organization. Each week on NFL Network, a first look of the new episode will air following the Thursday Night Football game, beginning Sept. 25. On NFL Now Plus, the full six-episode, “director’s cut” edition of Finding Giants will be available.

Syndicated series In Depth with Graham Bensinger announced that season five will launch with more than 20 new stations on board for the season, with several agreeing to multi-year deals. Network affiliate additions include: Los Angeles (KTLA-CW); Chicago (WFLD-FOX), Boston (WHDH-NBC), Washington D.C. (WUSA-CBS); Phoenix (KPHO-CBS); and Miami (WTVJ-NBC). Sponsors will include: Bud Light, Snickers, Subway, Bank of America, GEICO and Hugo Boss, among others.

The NFL named Dawn Hudson as the new CMO of the league. Hudson will oversee the development, direction and implementation of all marketing activities for the NFL. “We are looking forward to working with Dawn, whose experience as a leader and marketer will help further connect the NFL with fans,” said Commissioner Roger Goodell. For the past five years, she served as the Vice Chairman of The Parthenon Group and previously spent 11 years at PepsiCo, where she rose to President & CEO of Pepsi-Cola North America.

Rio 2016 struck a partnership with The Dow Chemical Company as the Official Carbon Partner of the upcoming Summer Olympic Games. The company will look to create “climate benefits to mitigate the direct greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from the organization and hosting of the event.” They also become the first partner of Rio 2016’s “Abraca (‘Embrace’) Sustainability” program, designed to promote and stage the Games with low environmental impact and a positive social legacy.

Legacy Agency announced the expansion of its properties and consulting division, which will be headed up by industry veteran Dave Bialek. Bialek will look to represent one of the media rights holders that sells the perimeter signage with nine clubs in the Liga MX and also bring the rights to the 3D Signs patent, a patented technology  that reshapes a logo to make it appear three dimensional on television, in the US.

The NBA, National Basketball Players Association, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks and New York City Mayor’s Office have launched a season-long effort to reach hundreds of thousands of youth in New York City’s five boroughs via fitness-related basketball activities as part of NBA All-Star 2015. "New York City is a mecca for basketball and this season’s NBA All-Star Game is the perfect opportunity to give back to the city that has meant so much to the game,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “Beginning today and throughout the season, we will celebrate the game by bringing to the youth of New York, across all five boroughs, community-based programs that focus on basketball, fitness, nutrition and healthy living.”

Bellator MMA has teamed up with technology partner Reality Check Systems to drive social media, integrating live MMA fan Tweets into to Spike TV’s Fight Night match broadcasts and allowing fans to react to comments from other fans in-real time and see those comments on-screen. The setup has already been tested in two live fights and is slated for use in eight more this year, as well as the season’s culminating Bellator 131. “Many of our fans are already engaging with the brand across our various social channels, so we wanted to provide them with even more connectivity to fight nights on Spike TV,” said Eric Burak, VP Digital, Bellator MMA. “Our partnership with RCS has enabled us to do just that. By elevating the social conversation to the broadcast, we’ve further expanded our offering beyond the television screen,resulting in a more immersive, interactive experience that encourages social engagement and connects audiences more closely to the sport.”
