09/19/16: ESPN powers hockey’s return; College football drives weekend ratings; Twitter’s TNF run

CYNOPSISSPORTS
09.19.16

Good morning. It’s Monday September 19, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Last weekend saw more than 200 countries and territories – spanning six continents  gear up for the return of the World Cup of Hockey. Stateside, ESPN saw its own reintroduction to the sport as the official carrier of the tournament as Team USA tumbled to Team Europe on Saturday. The two-week span sees ESPN supplementing the world feed of 31 cameras with additional views/angles as well as player and puck tracking technology that leverages Sportvision’s infrared tracking system while John Buccigross and Kevin Weekes rotate games with Steve Levy and Barry Melrose throughout tournament play and Linda Cohn and Adnan Virk host studio coverage.

Cynopsis Sports spoke with Mark Gross, ESPN SVP, Production and Remote Events, about hockey’s return to the ESPN family, building chemistry and the company’s approach to the sport.

Gross on hockey at ESPN: We’re thrilled to have hockey back. We have a lot of hockey fans here at the company who are really devoted to it. We’ve been excited to be back in the business. Working with the league and the NHLPA. Big picture, we want to do more than just document the games. We want to give people an idea of what the World Cup of Hockey is, the history behind it, the pageantry behind it, and how it is being treated in Toronto. So we wanted to cover the event and not just game-to-game, so it becomes one broadcast window with one team.

On new elements: While we are taking the world feed from Rogers Sportsnet, which is great at covering hockey, you are going to see “more” throughout the tournament: more angles, more looks purely from the camera coverage inside the arena. This is being treated like a Stanley Cup Playoff game. Some of the other things you will see include a better feel for who the players are and the stories behind the players for the audiences who aren’t used seeing hockey on our channel.

On chemistry: We’ve put together a team of talent who are obviously not used to working together because we don’t do much hockey. So our staples are the experts who have worked here for years in people like Levy, Cohn, Buccigross and Melrose, but we are excited to be able to add some incredible names to the mix as well such as Hall of Famers Brett Hull and Chris Chelios, to name just a couple. The early pretournament games were terrific for us in that they allowed us to work together for both the game and studios units.

On competition: We have been working hard pulling together vignettes and more to drive interest in the games. We aren’t naïve and know that we will be competing against football, baseball pennant races while hockey is suddenly showing up on our networks for the first time in over a decade. We have our work cut out for us and this is a good opportunity for us.

ON THE AIR

A hot weekend of college football proved a boon for the primary networks. CBS Sports saw its Alabama/Ole Miss battle on Saturday generate an average overnight score of 5.4/12 for the SEC on CBS to mark the highest-rated daytime game and second highest-rated overall of the 2016 college football season. The matchup’s Nielsen numbers were up 100% over last year’s equivalent in metered markets.

College football’s first top 10 matchup of the season saw a Louisville blowout over Florida State to mark a 4.5 overnight score on ABC. In addition, ESPN’s stream of the Cardinals’ win had an average minute audience of 158,000 viewers and a total of 679,000 unique viewers, becoming a top 5 streamed regular season game ever for ESPN. Additional highlights: The company states that the 4.5 overnight number marks the second-best September noon kickoff game on ESPN’s networks on record and the best in 11 years.

Around the dial, NBC Sports is reporting a 3.22/6 for the Michigan State/Notre Dame upset. That number marks the highest rating for a ND football game on the channel since Michigan State/Notre Dame in 2013. Top markets were: Detroit 16.0/28; Indianapolis 9.78/18; Columbus 6.5/11; Cincinnati 5.7/11; Chicago 5.5/11; and Ft. Myers 5.5/11.

FOX Sports took home the title for its primetime telecast of Ohio State and Oklahoma, which notched a 3.8/8 in overnight numbers. That ranks as the top primetime college football telecast for the evening.

Meanwhile, the return of Thursday Night Football last week made headlines with the addition of Twitter to the mix. The game wasn’t able to top last year’s record numbers, but still drew an average minute audience of15.7 million viewers across all platforms, including CBS Television Network, NFL Network, Twitter, NFL Digital, and CBS Interactive. On TV alone, the game earned an average of 15.4 million viewers, with a national household rating/share of 9.5/18 in Nielsen Live + Same Day National ratings. In total, Twitter reached 2.1 million combined worldwide viewers for the game, averaging 243,000.

Speaking of the NFL, FOX Deportes lined up NFLEROS, a new NFL-themed show running on Fridays at 7p. The weekly show offers multiple social media components for viewers including NFL headlines, highlights and game previews with host Pablo Alsina along with Brady Poppinga, John Laguna, Valeria Marin and Jessi Losada. Some of the show’s key segments include “NFLEROS Opinan,” a platform for influencers to present their points of view on teams, players and coaches; “Thursday Night Game Analysis”, a segment for Losada, Poppinga, Alsina and Laguna to discuss and debate plays; and a tribute to Hispanic athletes.

News reports suggest that both WWE and musician Billy Corgan are looking to add Impact Ventures, the producer of pay-per-view TNA and Impact Wrestling, to their respective portfolios. The New York Post writes that Corgan is in talks to become the majority owner of the company after joining Impact as a senior producer in May 2015. He upped his commitment last August by investing in the company and becoming its president. Meanwhile, WWE and Sinclair Broadcast Group, owner of the Ring of Honor wrestling organization, are also rumored to be in the mix with recent bids.

Comcast SportsNet Chicago reports record numbers for its coverage of the Sept. 15 Cubs game, which drew an 11/19 Chicago market household score for the team’s game agains the Brewers. The marks its highest Cubs single game rating ever as well as a new record for the highest-rated regular season game telecast  for any team  in CSN Chicago history.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Anchored be the 2016 Rio Olympics, NASCAR, and the start of the Premier League season, the Yahoo Sports  NBC Sports Network drummed up 110 million unique users in the month of August to rank atop all sports digital site. In addition, according to the company, the number is believed to be the most ever in the sports category for any month, according to multiplatform data released by comScore. Numbers are up 247% versus August 2012 for the London Olympics (31.9 million), up 93% from August 2015 (57.3 million), and up 36% versus the previous record in October 2015 (80.9 million).

ESPORTS

WESA’s new Players Council determined that the ESL Pro League finals needed a shakeup, announcing that the event, which takes place from Oct. 26-30, will feature a new play format. The tournament will now see 12 teams instead of eight competing for $750000 with six from Europe and six from North America. “The initial plan for a LAN-final with 8 teams felt outdated," said Viktor ‘vuggo’ Jendeby, Players Council Chairman. "The scene is now more competitive than ever, and so it feels natural to extend a tournament of this caliber to enable more teams to attend the finals. We also suggested more guaranteed LAN-matches for the teams attending, and proposed a format with 2 groups of 6 – like it is used at IEM events. ESL listened and we, the WESA Player Council, are very happy with how the new format looks like, and I hope the community will appreciate it as well."

THE MAIN EVENT

Eagles/Bears on ESPN at 8:30p.
