Tonight’s Premiere:

IN THE NEWS

Comedy Central, which has a special starring Stephen Rannazzisi scheduled for Saturday, is considering its options now that the comedian has been outed for lying for years about being at the World Trade Center on 9/11. “We just learned about this last night. We are very disappointed to hear about Steve’s misrepresentations and are currently determining how we will move forward,” said the net. FXX, home of The League, in which Rannazzisi stars, was none too pleased, either, saying, “It is upsetting that he would fabricate a story about having survived that horrible tragedy. It is also unfortunate that he did not admit to the truth sooner.” Rannazzisi apologized in a series of tweets. “This was inexcusable,” he offered on Wednesday. “I am truly, truly sorry….I made a terrible mistake.”

ABC News becomes the first major news net to go the virtual reality route with a project in collaboration with VR tech company Jaunt that will explore historical sites in Damascus, Syria. The story, an extension of a Nightline report, is available on Jaunt’s mobile app and by visiting ABCNews.com/VR.

A reboot of Hart to Hart, the 1979-1984 detective series starring Robert Wagner and Stefanie Powers, is in the works at NBC and will focus on a gay couple, reports Deadline. Project from Carol Mendelsohn and Sony Television has a script commitment.

Discovery Communications is hosting its inaugural Investor Day on Tuesday, September 29 in NYC. Discussing the company’s strategy: David Zaslav, president & CEO and Andrew Warren, CFO. JB Perrette, president, Discovery Networks International; Bruce Campbell, chief development & digital officer and general counsel, and Rich Ross, group president, will also be on hand. Event starts at 8:15a.

Late night’s not for loners anymore. A new study from cultural insights agency TruthCo., “Talking Late,” reveals that the role of late night is shifting away from fostering an isolated, escapist viewing experience. These days, late night talk shows serve as a virtual clubhouse for like-minded communities,” said Linda Ong, CEO and founder of TruthCo. “It’s increasingly becoming a collaborative medium fueled on viewer input and insight, cultivating kinship as a new form of escapism.”

Stephen Rannazzisi lying about being at the World Trade Center was a disgrace, but he’s clearly contrite. Should he be forgiven? Let us know what you think in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

Univision-backed UniMas grabbed a slate of series from Fusion, owned by ABC News and Univision, to air in Spanish in a Sunday night branded block, “Fusion Presenta.” Programming launches September 20 with docu-series Drug Wars.

Changing viewing habits aren’t an issue for AT&T, said SVP and CFO John Stephens at an annual Goldman Sachs conference. Unlike others, his company can deliver video over broadband, satellite or wireless. “We can do it all,” said Stephens. “That’s a different position.”

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

Judd Apatow will direct and produce Crashing for HBO. Comedy pilot stars comedian Pete Holmes as a man who crashes on fellow comics’ couches after his wife leaves him.

Dimension Television is developing a drama series based on Stephen King’s The Mist, later a 2007 film. Project comes from writer Christian Torpe. “The terror and drama in Stephen King’s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth,” said Bob Weinstein, co-chairman, The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films.

NEW SERIES

Linear’s just the beginning for Univision telenovela Antes Muerta Que Lichita (I’d Rather Be Dead than Ordinary). The story about a woman struggling to advance in the advertising industry will span digital and social platforms, including a character blog and a telenovela-within-a-telenovela on UVideos.com. Drama debuts Tuesday, September 22 at 8p.

Daily morning show Expresso will be a “signature series” for The Africa Channel, Narenda Reddy, SVP, programming and production, tells Cynopsis. But it was no small feat getting the program, which will air live in South Africa and on tape the next day in the U.S., off the ground. “Delivering Expresso to our audience in the U.S.on a fresh, same-day basis was a tremendous logistical challenge involving the creation of a digital post-production workflow transporting the daily, three-hour program in HD from Cape Town to L.A. inside a six-hour window,” says Reddy. “Technical teams on both continents worked for a year on bringing this to fruition.” Launch date: Monday, September 28, the same day South African native Trevor Noah debuts as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.

COMING UP

Late Show’s Stephen Colbert welcomes a special guest tonight: Jon Stewart’s Daily Show replacement, Trevor Noah, who starts his Comedy Central hosting gig Monday, September 28 at 11p. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon also stops by.

Arts net Ovation nabbed U.S. premiere rights to eight documentaries hosted by actors and musicians, including War Art with Eddie Remayne, Vivaldi: Mystery of the Four Seasons, Rene Magritte: The Man in the Hat, The Genius of Roald Dahl and Jane Austen: The Unseen Portrait?, among others. Specials will premiere in a doc block in early 2016.

Also arriving on Ovation: British competition series Portrait Artist of the Year. The net will air two seasons in its “Ovation Spotlight” slot, Sundays at 12 noon starting October 18.

Something to chew on: Documentary Edible City, about the Good Food movement, makes its broadcast premiere on Pivot Wednesday, September 23 at 9p. The film is part of Pivot’s “Food for Thought” month.

The Big Interview: Nashville Special Edition airs on AXS TV Tuesday, September 22 at 8p, with the ABC drama’s stars, Connie Britton and Charles Estan. Episodes of Nashville start airing on AXS Saturday, September 26 at 8p.

RETURNING SERIES

WE tv’s Marriage Boot Camp Reality Stars won renewals for seasons four and five. Season three was the highest-rated so far, averaging 1.2 million viewers, up 32 percent versus season two.

Pop picked up another run of Rock This Boat: New Kids on the Block. While season one focused on starry-eyed fans who took a cruise with the boy band, this time around cameras will capture more backstage footage of the guys. The fan perspective will still be key – five “Blockheads” have been hired as consulting producers.

TLC’s 90 Day Fiance is back for a third go-round on Sunday, October 11 at 10p. A special “Where Are They Now” ep airs the week before, updating viewers on the most buzzed-about couples from the prior season.

Champion boxer Laila Ali and chef Vic “Vegas” Moea are back as hosts for season two of fyi competition series Late Nite Chef Fight, launching Thursday, October 15 at 10p.

The Amazing Race will get a little more amazing this season, with teams traveling for the first time to Zimbabwe and the city of Rotterdam, Netherlands. New season premieres Friday, September 25 at 8p on CBS.

SundanceTV’s eerie thriller The Returned will be returning for season two, appropriately, on Halloween, October 31 at 10p. The net gives viewers a chance to catch up with a marathon of season one on Sunday, October 18 starting at 6a.

Billy Eichner is joined by Tina Fey in the season four premiere of Billy on the Street. Their mission? Find Fey a friend, on Thursday, October 8 at 10:30p on truTV.

First challenge for chefs on Food Network’s next run of Holiday Baking Championship: Nuts. Hopefuls must incorporate one into a chocolate confection when the series returns Sunday, November 1 at 9p.

CBS game shows The Price Is Right and Let’s Make a Deal start their new seasons with theme weeks on Monday, September 21. Price launches season 44 featuring a different decade each day, while on Deal it’s all about the benjamins, with a record $500,000 worth of prizes.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

AMC Networks, home to AMC, IFC, WE tv, BBC America and SundanceTV, said a percentage of its ad inventory will be made available for programmatic buys. The initiative “addresses our clients’ desire to apply their own data to more effectively target our networks’ valuable audiences,” said Arlene Manos, president, national ad sales at AMC Network.

Samsung and Toyota are onboard for the release of the next feature from NBCUniversal Hispanic Group’s Fluency Productions, sci-fi thriller Reversion, October 9 in LA, New York and Chicago, with a wider national release to follow, including multiplatform distribution on mobile, web and VOD. The film, produced in English and available with English or Spanish subtitles, will also air on Syfy, Telemundo and NBC Universo. “Reversion is another testament to NBCUniversal’s commitment to creating original programming with a focus on aspirational new heroes for multicultural audiences that is accessible across multiple platforms,” said Peter Blacker, EVP, digital media and emerging businesses, NBCUniversal Hispanic Group.

Thirty-second spots during NBC’s Sunday Night Football are commanding upwards of $665,000 per, sources tell AdAge, from $625,000 last year. Fox is expected to rake in $689,225 per ad for its “America’s Game of the Week,” while CBS is asking about $547,000 for its eight-game Thursday Night Football.

CASTING

A+E Networks Roots reboot will star Forest Whitaker (Lee Daniels’ The Butler), Anna Paquin (True Blood), Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors), Anika Noni Rose (Dream Girls), Chad L. Coleman (The Walking Dead), Erica Tazel (Justified) and Derek Luke (Antwone Fisher).Mario Van Peebles and Bruce Beresford have been set as directors for nights two and four. Andrew Buchan (Broadchurch) and JoBeth Williams (Dexter) have joined the cast of TNT pilot Home, from Jerry Bruckheimer, about family with ugly secrets.

GLOBAL GOINGS-ON

Fox series Empire and Scream Queens will launch internationally on Fox International’s 300+ channels within 24 hours of their U.S. premieres. “Hollywood is waking up to how instrumental it is to harness the collective voices of outspoken international fans, especially for water-cooler shows,” said Fox International Channels president Hernan Lopez. It makes for a big splash: the Fox channels reach about 244 million homes in 126 countries.

Tricon Films & Television acquired multiplatform rights to two travel series, Jason Down Under and Stopover, from pan regional lifestyle channel Life Inspired, based in Asia, and food series Cook, Eat, China! from MediaCorp’s OTT channel Toggle in Singapore.

9 Story Media Group licensed over 183 half hours of children’s programming to Discovery Kids Latin America, including new seasons of Peg + Cat and Wild to air on the network’s pan regional pay TV feeds in Mexico, Colombia, Brazil and the rest of Latin America.
