TODAY’S TOP NEWS

 
Makeup guru Michelle Phan has almost eight million YouTube subscribers. Now multiply that number by 12: That’s about how many dollars her subscription makeup delivery service just raised. And it’s quite a leap forward. The company, called Ipsy, had previously raised a grand total of roughly three million dollars in VC since its founding in 2011. “It’s a silent little company that grew aggressively off the back of YouTube influencers,” one anonymous investor told Fortune. Investors included TPG Growth and Sherpa Capital.
 
The Empire has descended upon Chinese computer screens. And no, that’s not a metaphor for government censorship. Chinese Internet and gaming giant Tencent Holdings has signed a deal with Disney to become China’s exclusive online distributor of all six Star Wars films. This month, Tencent subscribers can order the movies for 2.5 yuan per view (about 40 cents). But from October on, the films will simply be included in monthly subscription packages. And even non-subscribers can get the films on demand for 5 yuan a (about 80 cents). No word yet on the deal’s financial terms.
 
More on the Creative Arts Emmys: Netflix and Amazon both performed well. Transparent won three awards, including Guest Actor in a Comedy (Bradley Whitford) and Original Main Title Music (Dustin O’Halloran). Meanwhile, Netflix’s House of Cards won two awards, including Music Competition for a Series (Jeff Beal). Another digital winner was FunnyOrDie.com: Zach Galifianakis’s Between Two Ferns won the Emmy for Outstanding Short-Form Live-Action Entertainment.
 

 
VIRTUAL REALITY

 
Leave it to Facebook to try to develop headset-free virtual reality. According to the The Wall Street Journal, the company has begun working on an app that would allow for the creation of “spherical” videos. In other words, viewers would be able to change their viewing perspectives with a simple tilt of their devices. The app, which is in the very early stages of development, would work on both iOS and Android devices. Facebook declined to say when when­or even if­the app will become available.  
 
Canon introduced a virtual reality headset at the Canon Expo in New York. It’s just a prototype, but here are a few details: For one, the device delivers multi-directional sound. It’s also a handheld device, featuring two handles in lieu of a head strap.
 
 

DIGITAL ANALYTICS

 
Media analytics company comScore is launching Xmedia, a cross-platform audience measurement service that combines linear and digital audience metrics into a single tool. The product is now available to any U.S. syndicated research subscriber. comScore says that the service measures the combined audience reach of linear TV and digital properties without any duplications.

 

 

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

 
U.K.-based Curated VOD service MUBI has signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Paramount Pictures. A selection of Paramount titles, including Zoolander and No Country for Old Men, will be added to MUBI’s library, which is available in more than 200 countries. This is MUBI’s second major licensing agreement since it inked a deal with SONY only two months ago.
 
Josh Elkin’s caloric concoctions finally got too big for YouTube. The digital cooking star is leaving Epic Meal Time to host Sugar Showdown, a baking competition show on the Cooking Channel. The show debuts October 1. 
 
Movie and TV OTT site Popcornflix has added several kid-friendly TV shows. The new programming includes Inspector Gadget, Sonic the Hedgehog, Strawberry Shortcake, and The Legends of Zelda. Popcornflix is available online and on mobile devices, as well as Roku and Sony PlayStation PS4 and PS3. The series were licensed to Popcornflix by family-friendly content producer and distributor DHX Media.
 
 

OTT + SVOD

 
Not so fast, Chicago. Users of popular streaming services, including Netflix, Spotify, and Amazon, have sued the city in an attempt to prevent it from continuing to implement a recently enacted 9% tax on streaming entertainment sites. The plaintiffs argue, among other things, that the tax should have required a vote of approval from city officials before it went into effect.

Video advertising platform SpotX launched a new “in-content” ad unit. The unit will allow publishers to place adds within the content of their sites­for instance, in between paragraphs of text, instead of within the publishers’ video players.  “With viewability a current concern for advertisers, this new ad unit allows publishers to charge a premium as well as boost their inventory availability,” said Allen Klosowski, Vice President of Mobile and Connected Devices at SpotX.

Condé Nast
has a new CEO. The media company announced that in January 2016, Condé Nast President Robert A. Sauerberg Jr. will take over for current CEO Charles H. Townsend. Townsend, who has been CEO since 2004, will become chairman of Condé Nast U.S. Over the past decade, Townsend and Sauerberg helped oversee Condé Nast’s foray into premium digital content creation.
 
Fitting that Nintendo would announce its new CEO just one day after Super Mario’s 30th birthday. Two months following the death of longtime CEO Satoru Iwata, Nintendo Managing Director Tatsumi Kimishima has been named as Iwata‘s successor. He takes over just as Nintendo looks ready to explore opportunities in mobile. The company has already announced plans to release five mobile games by March 2017.
 
 

MOBILE APPS + GAMES

 
Speaking of which: Nintendo announced its first venture into mobile gaming with the upcoming release of Pokémon Go, a gaming app for Android and iOS. Among other features, the augmented reality app lets users collect and trade virtual Pokémon.
 
British digital marketing platform SuperAwesome acquired PopJam, a kid-friendly social media app popular in the U.K. CEO Dylan Collins told Kidscreen that the acquisition will expand SuperAwesome’s reach, and enable PopJam’s users to be connected to brands, content owners, and SuperAwesome’s kid-friendly advertising.
