09/10/15: Apple unveils product updates; Instagram ups its ad game; NBC Universal Partners with media-savvy sites


Good morning. It’s Thursday September 10, 2015, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.


Cynopsis Digital will be unwrapping this for the next day or twelve, but here goes: Apple debuted a slew of much-anticipated product updates, including the iPhone 6S, the iPad Pro (which can only be described as ginormous), the Apple Pencil, and an updated Apple TV, which enables gaming and shopping. Seems like every time Tim Cook speaks publicly, the world shifts on its axis. 
is majorly expanding its ad game. The Facebook-owned company already dabbles in video advertising, but the ads re limited to just a few big companies (including Disney and CW), and they’re only 15 seconds long. Now they’ll be thirty seconds long, and the number of advertisers will be anything but limited: According to a blog post from Instagram, “advertisers both large and small,” from over 30 countries, will have access to the new ad format. It becomes available on September 30.
NBC Universal has called in the big digital guns. Recently, the company forged partnerships with the digital-savvy sites BuzzFeed and Vox, investing $200 million in each.  “We need to get better in terms of taking our existing video content and bringing it to consumers directly via the Internet,” said NBCU CEO Steve Burke. Burke said the deals will pave the way for content sharing, as well as education and joint advertising panels. First up, NBCU and BuzzFeed will work together on a project about the Olympics­although not many details are known yet, including which Olympics.


’s march toward global hegemony continues unabated. The SVOD giant announced that its service will debut in Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan in early 2016. The service launched in Japan, its first Asian market, only eight days ago.
Endemol Beyond USA, the digital content network of the TV producer and distributor Endemol Shine North America, launched GetBeyond.US, a new direct-to-consumer OTT platform. The platform’s programming includes content from YouTube makeup expert Michelle Phan, and will soon add content from Smasher, Endemol Beyond USA’s yet-to-be-released e-sports and gaming network. Endemol Beyond USA designed GetBeyond.US with the help of online-video consulting firm Piksel, which provided Endemol with the new OTT service’s cloud-based video platform. 


The creator of infamous movie-pirating website Popcorn Time has come forward. Argentinian software designer Federico Abad revealed his identity to Norwegian newspaper Dagens Næringsliv. Abad told the paper that he initially created Popcorn Time, which allows users to easily stream movies online illegally, in part because it took too long for American movies to reach Argentina after their release. Abad took Popcorn Time offline in 2014. But the site had used an open-sourced code, which other groups have since used to create readily available versions of the software.


James Franco hasn’t been himself lately. Season 2 of Franco’s web series Making a Scene, a comic mash-up of miscellaneous movies and TV shows, premiered yesterday on AOL. In the opening episode, Franco dares to ask the question that literally no one has ever asked: What if Breaking Bad’s Walter White and Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw started dating? Franco, naturally, plays both roles.

Al Roker and the newswire service Business Wire have joined forces to release a series of digital video projects. The videos will focus on trends in business, with an emphasis on start-ups. “The new video platforms we are developing will deliver insights into what we see driving digital and social conversations,” said Business Wire CEO Cathy Baron Tamraz.
The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) expanded its online courses (available here.) Offerings include digital O Courses and guided meditation experiences featuring instructors including Shawn Achor and Deepak Chopra. The latest new offering, "21 Days to Happiness," begins October 12.


Stephen Colbert debuted as host of The Late Show, and the Twitter response was mostly positive. According to Amobee Brand Intelligence, there were 73,467 tweets around the time of the episode (11:35 pm September 8 – 1:35am September 9, EST). Sentiment around those tweets was 33% Positive, 53% Neutral, and 14% Negative.
It’s been a great summer for Fetty Wap and The Weeknd. According to research from Google, the two musicians combined for six of the top 20 most-played music videos on YouTube from May 25 to September 7, taking three spots apiece. No one else took more than two (and that includes Taylor Swift). Full list below.
