Media General struck a deal to buy Meredith for $2.4 billion in cash and stock. With 88 stations in 54 markets, the renamed Meredith Media General will rank as the third-largest TV station owner in the U.S., with a reach of about 100 million unduplicated women via broadcast, digital and print assets including Better Homes and Gardens and AllRecipe.com. “This merger will create a strong and efficient company positioned to realize the significant earnings and cash flow potential of local broadcasting; leverage the unparalleled reach and rich content-creation capabilities of Meredith’s national brands; and capture the rapidly developing growth potential of the digital media space,” said Meredith CEO Steve Lacy, who will become CEO of the new company.

Singer/actress Vanessa Williams, who was crowned the first African American Miss America in 1984, returns to the Atlantic City competition for the first time in 32 years on Sunday. Williams’ role: head judge. The 2016 Miss America Competition airs September 13 at 9p on ABC.

Reality TV is starting to take itself more seriously, according to a new study from branding and insights company TruthCo. “In response to concerns that Reality TV has been calcifying, we’re seeing the rise of a prestige offering within the genre,” said Rajiv Menon, cultural analyst. “We can expect to see more socially-driven and investigative Reality programming, as well as a greater level of emotional depth and complexity from characters.” Related finding: investigating social issues is increasingly a driver of viewer choice.

Times Square’s about to get a little more crowded – NBC is utilizing the iconic NYC tourist magnet for marketing campaigns for Blindspot and Heroes Reborn. On September 12-13, the public can have a photo taken with a ball of animated fire in their hands; photos will be streamed to the Square’s digital billboard and shared via social media. On September 19-20, pedestrians can have a pic of their head placed on a tattooed body, a la Blindspot’s Jane Doe. A special two-hour Heroes premiere event airs Thursday, September 24 at 8p; Blindspot precedes it on Monday, September 21 at 10p.

American Heroes Channel is partnering with Boston College to present the inaugural “Red Bandanna Hero Award,” inspired by BC alumni Welles R. First winner is Minneapolis fireman Jake LaFerriere, set to be honored during the televised BC football game on Friday, September 18 at 8p on ESPN.

Make it so: The National Air and Space Museum is asking Trekkies for images or film of the original studio model of the USS Enterprise, as conservators work to restore the Star Trek ship to its appearance in 1967. FUN OF YOUR BUSINESS

We’re back!!! Starting today and continuing every Wednesday, Cynopsis Media and truTV bring you a special feature: FUN OF YOUR BUSINESS.  Each week, we will publish the top responses to a question that we asked the week before.

This week’s question was: "What’s the one television program that everybody seems to love that you just can’t get into?"

  • Love and Hip-Hop Atlanta. It kills in the weekly ratings but I have never seen an episode. – LaTasha Ezell, Director, On-Air Promotions, ASPiRE
  • The Walking Dead! Zombies just are not my jam. We differ on culinary preferences. – Joanne Schioppi, Sr. Director, Investigation Discovery
  • Empire, but mainly because I haven’t had time to get into it! – Celo Moloney, Manager, Integrated Marketing, Pop
  • Risking being burned at the stake, I’m going to have to say Mad Men. Maybe it just hits too close to home? – Molly Sugarman, VP, Managing Director of Treehouse, Horizon Media
  • I’m a Jew from New York, so Seinfeld just isn’t that funny to me. Watching these conversations on a daily basis in real life is enough. – Erica Rubinsky, Freelance Grip

Don’t miss out on the fun. Take the plunge and see how your answer stacks up against your colleagues’.  Next week’s question is… "What’s the fall clothing item you are most looking forward to wearing?"

Hurry! Send your responses today to [email protected].

FUN OF YOUR BUSINESS is brought to you by the inquiring minds at
truTV, where everything is WAY MORE FUN
