IN THE NEWS

Head of the class: FOX earned its first “excellent” grade for a U.S. broadcast network, reports a new GLAAD TV study. It’s a big reversal from a failing grade in the first NRI report in back 2006 for the net that now includes Empire, until recently Glee and So You Think You Can Dance. “The network’s progress is a testament to intentional efforts towards inclusion and the evolution of the TV landscape on the whole,” the GLAAD report stated. The NRI report charted the quantity, quality, and diversity of LGBT representation on network shows that aired between June 2014 and May 2015.

In the everything old is new again department, Nickelodeon is mulling the return of some classics. “We are looking at our library to bring back ideas, shows that were loved, in a fresh new way,” Russell Hicks, president of content and development at the net, told Variety. Retooled versions of Rugrats, Hey Arnold!, You Can’t Do That on Television and Victorious are being considered to appear in other formats, like a movie or special.

Stephen Colbert is having some fun on Snapchat, posting video messages for five consecutive days leading up to the premiere of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, September 8 on CBS. Colbert began his social-media promo campaign on Thursday; his snaps will be available through Snapchat’s Snap Channel within the app’s Discover section.

The Television Academy announced that A+E Networks will receive its 2015 Governors Award, in recognition of corporate social responsibility programs, presented during the Creative Arts Emmy Awards on Saturday, September 12.  “For over 30 years, A+E Networks has had an unwavering commitment to the communities we serve,” said Nancy Dubuc, President and CEO of A+E Networks. “Television is a powerful medium and we are proud to be able to use our networks and platforms to shine a light on important social issues.”

TLC aims to make a big difference in the lives of those in need with the launch of national multi-platform campaign, Give A Little TLC. The initiative kicks off on Hunger Action Day, Thursday, September 3, in partnership with Feeding America, with the goal of providing one million meals for families in need by the end of 2015.

Empire released two new tracks ahead of its season two premiere. The FOX drama’s official Vevo page featuresNo Doubt About It,” including Jussie Smollett (Jamal) and Pitbull, who co-wrote the song with Ne-Yo. Pitbull is slated to guest on an upcoming episode or the series. Ne-Yo was added to the show’s musical team back in May. The second song, “Ain’t About the Money,” features both Smollett and his TV brother Yazz (Hakeem).
