The War on Drugs continues. Netflix has already renewed Narcos for a second season. The series, about notorious cartel kingpin Pablo Escobar, debuted a week ago to strong reviews.
More Netflix news: Lady Dynamite, the upcoming series starring Maria Bamford, has rounded out its castand it’s a comedy-lover’s dream. Additions include Patton Oswalt, Ana Gasteyer, Jon Cryer, Sarah Silverman, Jenny Slate, and guest-star Tig Notaro. The series will be loosely based on Bamford’s life.
AOL’s upping its mobile game. The company announced that it’s buying mobile advertising company Millennial Media Inc. for about $250 million. Millennial sells mobile ads across numerous website and appsabout 65,000 apps total. And Millennial’s global network covers around 1 billion active users. AOL, itself owned by Verizon, is likely to ink its deal with Millennial fall.
Dude! CMT greenlit a new linear TV series from YouTube comedy team Dude Perfect. The series will combine sports, comedy and live-action stunts. The Dude Perfect Show (working title) will star Tyler Toney, Cody Jones, Garrett Hilbert and twins Coby and Cory Cotton.
For some time now, Comcast has been teasing the release of Watchable, its upcoming online video service. Well, props to Variety for some impressive detective work: The trade pub discovered a Watchable demo site that was briefly left open to the public. Variety nabbed screengrabs and obtained some intriguing info: While Watchable’s content is Internet-native, it features no comments section and heavily employs editor-driven curation. The service will be available to all users – not just Comcast customers. Comcast plans to launch Watchable on set-top boxes in the coming weeks, followed by a launch on Android and iOS.
MOBILE APPS
Stephen Colbert is appealing to Snapchat usersor as he’s calling them, Snapsternauts. Yesterday, the comedian debuted a series of short promo videos, slated to continue rolling out on the app’s Discover section until Colbert’s debut as host of The Late Show. “Watch this space over the next five days,” he said in the first video. “And then, since this is Snapchat, I’ll disappear!” The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will premiere this Tuesday, September 8, assuming Stephen Colbert still exists by then.
Incidentally, Colbert’s use of Snapchat was supremely wise. According to Business Insider, the app is now drawing more than four billion video views a daysolely from the company’s Live Stories feature, which shows curated feeds of users’ videos and images. The company’s staggering growth in video is paying major advertising dividends: Re/code reports that the company expects to reach $50 million in ad revenue for 2015.
Baseball fans are losing their monopoly on statistical geekdom. Comcast said it has improved its set-top X1 Sports app for the upcoming NFL and college football seasons. The updated app will feature more real-time data, along with visuals that sync up with on-field action. According to a blog post from Preston Smalley, Executive Director of Product Management at Comcast’s Silicon Valley Innovation Center, the app’s features will include pre-game player and team comparisons, fantasy stats, win/loss probabilities, and player injury reports.

Combine barbecue with football, and you’ve got a great recipe for linear TV. The Grill Iron, a series of shorts from the digital channel Tastemade, will be repackaged as a seven-episode series and aired on the Cooking Channel starting Sept. 5. The series centers on the tailgating culture surrounding college football. Scripps Networks Interactive, which owns the Cooking Channel, is an investor in Tastemade.

Facebook began testing its new immersive mobile ads. The ads canvass an entire mobile screen with videos, pictures, and product info that users can navigate using their fingers. The ads don’t have an official name as of yet; Facebook is referring to them only as “immersive experiences.” Michael Kors, Gatorade, Mr. Porter, and Carrefour Spain are among the first brands to begin testing the new feature.
Cinedigm has chosen the Comcast-owned video publishing company thePlatform to handle logistics for two of its OTT networks: thePlatform’s video management system, mpx, will service CONtv, a platform geared toward the comic-con community, and the upcoming Dove Channel, a family-friendly joint venture between Cinedigm and The Dove Foundation. mpx provides automated publishing and distribution to PCs, mobile devices, and TVs.
Video technology provider Kaltura announced the launch of Kaltura MediaX. Part of the company’s OTT TV offering. MediaX is designed to enable pay-TV operators, content providers and broadcasters to quickly launch advanced cloud DVR services.
More MTV VMA numbers are in: the awards show clocked 41 million video streams across MTV’s digital platforms, Twitter, and Facebook. That’s 55% more than last year. The final tally includes 19 million total visits to MTV.com and 2.1 million views on YouTube.
According to research from video ad tech company Unruly, young men are far more likely than any other demographic to react to video content with intense emotions. Among other findings, Unruly concluded that male video-watchers 18-34 are 38% more likely to feel anger than the norm. With anger, that number is 38%. Arousal? 102%.
The YouTube multi-channel network Fullscreen is reshuffling its original programming leadership. Chief Content Officer Michael Goldfine, who joined the company in October 2014, has departed the company, though Fullscreen says he will continue working on some future projects. In his place, the company brought on Polly Auritt as Vice President of Scripted Content and Katy Chen as Vice President of Unscripted Development. Auritt formerly served as MTV’s VP of Scripted Series Development; Chen comes from AwesomenessTV, where she served as Director of Development.

Disney launched a series of live toy unboxings on YouTube to build buzz for December mega-tentpole Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
