Members of the Authors Guild are suing OpenAI, alleging “flagrant and harmful infringements of plaintiffs’ registered copyrights” and “systematic theft on a mass scale.” John Grisham, George R.R. Martin and Jonathan Franzen are among 17 complainants. “It is imperative that we stop this theft in its tracks, or we will destroy our incredible literary culture, which feeds many other creative industries in the U.S.,” Authors Guild CEO Mary Rasenberger said in a statement. “Great books are generally written by those who spend their careers and, indeed, their lives, learning and perfecting their crafts. To preserve our literature, authors must have the ability to control if and how their works are used by generative AI.”

Meanwhile, companies like YouTube are leaning into AI. At its Made on YouTube event, the company introduced tools like GAI-image generator for backgrounds Dream Screen, which offers AI solutions for its Shorts platform. So what about the dangers of AI? “There might be challenges around technology like this,” said YouTube CEO Neal Mohan during a Q&A. “Our rules of the road apply, our enforcement rules apply. All of the technology we’ve been investing in for many years to make sure we live up to our responsibility as a global platform will apply here.”

Microsoft is adding “your everyday AI companion” Copilot to it advertising platform. Intended as a real-time intelligence assistant to reach advertising goals, Copilot will work as an app or reveal itself when needed with a right click. “We will continue to add capabilities and connections to Copilot across to our most-used applications over time in service of our vision to have one experience that works across your whole life,” said the company in a blog post.

OpenAI introduced a new tool to help fill in prompts. Using ChatGPT, DALL-E-3 takes a prompt and makes it more descriptive and generates higher-quality images that better reflect prompts. OpenAI expects to roll out DALL-E 3 to premium ChatGPT users in October, followed by research labs and its API customers.

In a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week, Elon Musk mentioned X users might soon be charged for using the platform. “We’re moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the X system,” Musk told the PM, explaining it was the only way to “combat vast armies of bots.”

During the talk, Netanyahu also asked Musk to combat antisemitism. “I know your commitment to free speech,” said Netanyahu. “But I also know your opposition to antisemitism. You’ve spoken about it, tweeted about it. And all I can say is, I hope you find, within the confines of the First Amendment, the ability to stop not only antisemitism, or roll it back as best you can, but any collective hatred of people.”

Synacor announced Cloud ID Passkey Connect, a managed service that helps streaming content companies and service providers deploy secure, passwordless authentication for online content. The service can immediately be integrated into existing authentication solutions. “For years, efforts have focused on trying to make password-based access easier when really the only way to make the problem go away is to get rid of passwords themselves,” said Jeff Bak, SVP of Product at Synac Cloud ID. “Passkey Connect eliminates fallout from lost, forgotten, stolen and shared passwords and the burden to create, manage and remember an ever-expanding portfolio of passwords so consumers can finally enjoy streaming content anytime, anywhere with zero effort.”

The second quarter of 2023 was the second highest in volume in the history of OOH, based on figures released by the Out of Home Advertising Association of America. Digital OOH, which accounted for over 33% of sales, increased 12.9% from a year ago. Five of the top 10 product industries increased in volume, led by Public Transportation, Hotels & Resorts (+35.3); Local Services & Amusements (+6.0%), Schools, Camps, & Seminars (+3.3%), and Government, Politics and Organizations (+0.8%), continuing the same trend seen in 1Q23 for heightened consumer demand for real-life experiences.

Ads that align with the video content being seen increases ad memorability, brand impact, and other metrics, according to a study from Integral Ad Science in partnership with Neuro-Insight. The study indicates that the brain becomes active and aids viewer engagement when watching a program, showing 14% increase in brand impact when ads match the tone of the content being viewed.

Samsung Ads is expanding its actionable and dynamic video ad inventory via a partnership with BrightLine. With a suite of products that will allow Samsung Ads clients to run interactive ads beyond the existing QR coded and shoppable OLV inventory, BrightLine’s dynamic ad units allow for live and personalized ads, the addition of scrollable branded carousels, on screen polls, and trivia experiences that provide viewers with opportunities to engage and take action directly from their TV screen.

Teads inked partnership deal with LGBTQ+ lifestyle publisher Attitude, expanding on the platform’s focus rooted in providing high quality media with access to diverse and direct inventory. The deal will see Teads become the sole provider of outstream video formats to Attitude in the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia, while allowing the publisher to leverage Teads’ full-funnel suite of ad formats.

CTV content has a +13% higher attention index and a +74% higher co-viewing incidence than linear television content, according to a survey from LG Ad Solutions in partnership with TVision. Eighty-eight percent of respondents co-view streaming television, and they report being more likely to pay attention to both content and ads when doing so: 67% of respondents pay the same or more attention to programming when co-viewing while 54% pay same or more attention to the advertising content. The study also found that an inverse relationship between attention and ad duration – attention is at its highest on the first exposure to a CTV ad, but gradually declines as exposure frequency increases. “This data indicates that on average, streaming TV viewers are more likely to be watching with other people than linear TV viewers,” said Tony Marlow, Chief Marketing Officer, LG Ad Solutions. “Interestingly, this research also indicates that people tend to pay more attention to the screen when co-viewing. This could mean that streaming may be a much more shared experience than previously realized and that this helps drive a higher level of attention for content and ads.”

Cineverse will integrate Whip Media’s Content Partner Payments platform for FAST, AVOD, SVOD, and EST into Matchpoint Insights to streamline royalty reporting. The integration into Matchpoint Insights will allow Cineverse to automate the processing of content partner payments to over 1,700 licensors. “Our partnership with Whip Media is critical as it helps fill a gap in our technology stack,” said Tony Huidor, Chief Operating Officer & Chief Technology Officer at Cineverse. “We feel that developing financial-based software is not our core competency so partnering with Whip Media and leveraging their best-in-class technology allows us to address a significant unmet need in the rapidly growing streaming marketplace.”

Local Now is expanding its partnership with NBCUniversal, adding 11 NBC local news FAST channel, as well as six regional and national Telemundo FAST channels, and two NBC entertainment FAST channels – American Crimes and NBC LX Home.

Mundo Hispano Digital announced the launch of The MundoNow Project, an advertising-led revenue initiative designed to help brands reach overlooked digital Latinos by partnering with diverse sites and bring authentic reach and scale to brands. “It’s time we move to change the AdTech system as we know it, into something that effectively connects brands with real Latinos, acculturated and language-diverse as we are,” said MundoNow CEO Rene Alegria. “There are too many instances where brands just can’t connect with us at scale because we must either be ‘all Spanish-language this’ or ‘all general-market that.’”

Internet household spending on streaming subscription services has declined 25% to $73 per month versus $90 in 2021, according to data from Parks Associates. Thirty-one percent of households used free ad-based services by the end of 2022, posting the fourth consecutive year of market share growth since 2019. What does that mean for advertisers? “Leveraging data to provide relevant content and digital advertisements to keep viewers engaged is crucial, and tricky. Data is fragmented across operating systems and applications, and viewer consent is required,” said Jennifer Kent, VP, Research, Parks Associates. “The next generation of TV and CTV advertising should not replicate traditional linear, pay-TV ad formats and models but offer interactive, actionable, secure, and enjoyable experiences that engage video viewers and attract ad dollars.”
