IN THE NEWS

The WGA confirmed to its members that it is resuming negotiations with producers this week. “The WGA and AMPTP now have a confirmed schedule to bargain this week, starting on Wednesday,” wrote the guild. “You might not hear from us in the coming days while we are negotiating but know that our focus is getting a fair deal for writers as soon as possible. We’ll reach out again when there is something of significance to report.”

Not surprisingly, union writers are getting creative. The WGA has planned a “Murder, She Wrote”-themed picket line for Thursday, September 21 on the Fox lot – with “Jessica Fletcher fashion encouraged.” Angela Lansbury starred as the mystery writer sleuth from 1984-96.

HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” will not be back for a new season on September 22 after all. My decision to return to work was made when it seemed nothing was happening and there was no end in sight to this strike,” Maher tweeted on Monday. “Now that both sides have agreed to go back to the negotiating table I’m going to delay the return of Real Time, for now, and hope they can finally get this done.” “The Jennifer Hudson Show,” “The Drew Barrymore Show” and “The Talk” also reversed plans to resume production amid the Hollywood strikes.

Citing a better economic outlook and continued growth in digital ad formats, Magna has increased its forecast for all-media ad spend in the US for 2023, projecting ad sales to increase 5.2%, up from the 4.2% predicted in June. Magna also raised its ad spend forecasts for next year – excluding cyclical events (Olympics, presidential election) it is looking for 5.6% growth in 2024, up from 5%. The picture is not as rosy for traditional media. “The ad revenues of most traditional media owners will continue to stagnate or decline despite the continued growth of their digital ad sales,” Magna projected. “The ongoing writers’ strike may lead to a lack of fresh attractive content in the first half of 2024 and thus potentially a further acceleration in long-term viewing declines.”

HBO canceled “Winning Time; The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” after two seasons. The show’s season one finale delivered 1.6 million same-day viewers, while the season two premiere drew 629,000 across linear and Max.

Nexstar Media Group and DirecTV reached a carriage deal shortly after restoring signals in time for Sunday football games. In a statement, the companies said they “greatly appreciate” the patience of their subscribers and viewers during the two-and-a-half-month impasse.

Open Planet, from Studio Silverback, is launching early in 2024 with a library of archival natural history footage available for free. “As filmmakers, we know stories can be powerful agents of change, and with the window for action rapidly closing to address the planetary emergency, there’s never been a greater need for compelling, authentic storytelling,” aid Studio Silverback Executive Director Colin Butfield. “Open Planet will not only present the causes and impacts of climate change and nature loss, but also the incredible ingenuity of those driving innovation to keep crucial sustainability targets within reach.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Food Network and Duff Goldman have signed a new multi-year, multi-project deal that includes new holiday series “The Elf on the Shelf: Sweet Showdown,” premiering later this year.

Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner have been named EPs/showrunners for the 81st Golden Globe Awards, scheduled for Sunday, January 7. The White Cherry Entertainment duo have produced Oscar, Emmy and Tony Awards ceremonies, among other specials.

RETURNING SERIES

Netflix’s “Hilda” is back for its third and final season on Thursday, December 7. The animated series is based on Luke Pearson’s graphic novels.

“The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper” returns to CNN Sunday, September 24 at 8p with an investigation into the followers of a fringe conspiracy rooted in QAnon ideology.

Disney debuted a new featurette for Marvel Studios’ “Loki” season two. The sophomore season picks up in the aftermath of the season finale, when Loki found himself in a battle for the soul of the Time variance Authority. The show returns to Disney+ on Thursday, October 5 at 6p.

ABC News Studios’ streaming news program “Impact x Nightline” returns for a second season on Thursday, September 21 on Hulu. The series features investigative reporting from ABC News anchors Diane Sawyer, Juju Chang and Janai Norman, plus correspondents Rachel Scott, Matt Rivers, Selina Wang, Megan Ryte and more.

TECH TALK

Google has agreed to pay a $155 million in a pair of California lawsuits over location privacy. In 2018, the AP reported that Google stored some location data even when a user’s “Location History” setting was turned off. The report led to lawsuits by attorneys general and consumers. Google has already paid over $500 million in other states.

Teads inked partnership deal with LGBTQ+ lifestyle publisher Attitude, expanding on the platform’s focus rooted in providing high quality media with access to diverse and direct inventory. The deal will see Teads become the sole provider of outstream video formats to Attitude in the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia, while allowing the publisher to leverage Teads’ full-funnel suite of ad formats.

STREAMING

Internet household spending on streaming subscription services has declined 25% to $73 per month versus $90 in 2021, according to data from Parks Associates. Thirty-one percent of households used free ad-based services by the end of 2022, posting the fourth consecutive year of market share growth since 2019. What does that mean for advertisers? “Leveraging data to provide relevant content and digital advertisements to keep viewers engaged is crucial, and tricky. Data is fragmented across operating systems and applications, and viewer consent is required,” said Jennifer Kent, VP, Research, Parks Associates. “The next generation of TV and CTV advertising should not replicate traditional linear, pay-TV ad formats and models but offer interactive, actionable, secure, and enjoyable experiences that engage video viewers and attract ad dollars.”

Season 34 of Fox animated comedy “The Simpsons” launches Wednesday, October 11 on Disney+. The season features a double dose of “Treehouse of Horror” episodes, the first time in the show’s history there were two “Treehouse”-branded episodes in a single Halloween. Season 35 makes its debut Sunday, October 1 on Fox.

COMING UP

“Good Burger 2” premieres on Paramount+ on November 22. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell return for the Thanksgiving week release of the comedy sequel, reprising their roles from Nickelodeon’s sketch show “All That.” Lil Rel Howery, Jillian Bell and Kamaia Fairburn also star.

Hulu is hosting an interactive experience for “Only Murders in the Building” fans in NYC September 22-24 to celebrate the show’s season three finale. The experience takes place at the actual space the season was filmed in, The Goosebury Theatre [United Palace], where attendees will be tasked with their own personal crime scene investigation journey based on the show.

“Bobi Wine: The People’s President” debuts Thursday, October 5 on Disney+ and Hulu. The film follows Wine, who uses his music to denounce a dictatorial regime in Uganda.

The third annual “Great American Christmas” stunt launches next month on Great American Family. With 20 original holiday films, the annual holiday program event returns with its first premiere of the season on Friday, October 20.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

ABC added 10 “Monday Night Football” simulcasts to its strike-impacted fall schedule. Games added include Seahawks v. Giants on October 2, Packers v. Raiders on October 9, Cowboys v. Chargers on October 16, 49ers v. Vikings on October 23, Raiders v. Lions on October 30, Chargers v. Jets on November 6, Broncos v. Bills on November 13, Bears v. Vikings on November 27, Bengals v. Jaguars on December 4 and Chiefs v. Patriots on December 18.

A version of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” will play before every “Monday Night Football” game, announced ESPN. The new Monday Night Football anthem is a collaboration between Snoop Dogg, Chris Stapleton and Cindy Blackman.

ITV scored the rights to air England men’s soccer qualifiers from 2024-28. ITV currently co-hosts coverage of major tournaments with the BBC. “We’re delighted to bring the England men’s team back to ITV, which keeps coverage of their progress between major tournaments on free to air television,” said ITV Director of Sport Niall Sloane. “We have an experienced team here who are looking forward to bringing viewers all the action and insight from England’s qualification campaigns in the coming years.”

GOING GLOBAL

The UK’s ITV, BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5 are collaborating on free TV service Freely, delivering live TV over broadband. “This new development is a reflection of the fact that a growing number of UK viewers are watching content online, but still want easy access to the shared experience of live TV,” said Jonathan Thompson, CEO of Everyone TV, the organization that runs free TV in the UK.

Cake has partnered with Baby Octopus and Toybox to distribute tween action animated adventure “Sherwood.” A YouTube Original, “Sherwood” was created by Diana Manson and Megan Laughton and has amassed over 54 million views.
