In addition to our talented finalists, the event will salute industry veterans, Terri Minsky, the visionary behind the hit Disney Channel series Andi Mack and Lizzie McGuire, and Fred Seibert, esteemed children’s content creator and founder of Frederator Networks/Chief Creative Officer at WOW! Unlimited Media.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. Television nabbed the rights to memoir Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns and One Intact Glass Ceiling, to develop as a TV series, reports Deadline. Best-seller from Amy Choznick chronicles the 2008 and 2016 presidential campaigns.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Nature is back on PBS on Wednesday, October 24 at 8p (check local listings). Taking a page from Nat Geo’s Earth Live and Yellowstone Live events, season 37 culminates in May 2019 with Nature’s first live television event, Spring Live (wt), following researchers, scientists and citizens as they investigate how nature and wildlife respond to the change in seasons.

Science Channel reveals the origins of popular monster stories in Mythical Beasts, premiering Sunday, October 14 at 10p. “While we think of the idea of these beasts as pure legend, the mindblowing stories about how they came to be have their roots in reality,” said Marc Etkind, General Manager, Science Channel.

Fox News is launching a four-episode midterm election series, The Ben Shapiro Election Special, on Sunday, September 23 at 8p. The political commentator will be joined by a panel of guests to discuss the week’s headlines and their impact on voting.

Monchhichi will have its U.S. premiere on kids streaming service Boomerang. The CGI-animated series debuted on France’s TFI in 2017 (the plush was born in 1974 in Tokyo). In addition to European launches, the show arrived in Latin America in May on Discovery Kids.

Classic episodes of Cooking Channel’s Goods Eats are spiced up by Alton Brown in Good Eats: Reloaded, launching Monday, October 15 at 9p. “We went in only expecting to replace about 30% of the shows, but ended up doing more…a whole lot more!” said Brown.

Jacklyn Zeman is best known to TV audiences as Bobbie Spencer on General Hospital, a show she joined in 1977. But Zeman will soon be doing double duty on daytime – albeit without so much drama – on new TLC home design and lifestyle program, Make This Place Your Home, launching Saturday, September 29 at 9a. Zeman explains why the show is a “precious gift” to her and co-host, celebrity chef and lifestyle guru Jamie Laurita, from the late Robin Leach, in Cynsiders.

COMING UP

Smithsonian Channel counts down the Top Ten Deadliest Beasts on Wednesday, October 24 at 8p. In the two-hour special, look for (computer-generated) predators like an eight-foot Terror bird with a head the size of a horse.

SHORT FORM VIDEO

Zig Zag Productions announced a new short-form series for Facebook Watch starring UK street magician Troy Von Scheibner. Troy the Magician includes footage from magic and stunts on the streets of London and New York.

Valence Media acquired a $60 million minority stake in UK’s Fulwell 73, known for short form programming gone viral, as well as music and sports TV programs. “As a company we have never stood still and in Valence we now have a partner that can support the ambitions we have for growth, match our entrepreneurial spirit and share our demand for the highest creative standards, whilst allowing us to retain the independence that has been so integral to our success,” said Valence partner Leo Pearlman.

Looking for an opportunity to showcase your short form video work? Submissions are being accepted for the 2019 Cynopsis Short Form Video Festival, taking place in March. For more info – and beat the early bird deadline – go here.

Ahead of the UEFA Champions League Group Stage, Bleacher Report is launching The Champions, a digital animated parody show with Champions League players (and their managers), all living under the roof of the same chateau. From the creators of Game of Zones, The Champions is designed to appeal to both hardcore passionate fans and newcomers to the sport.

DIGITAL DATA

Path is going nowhere. The eight-year-old social media service will be removed from the App Store and Google Play on October 1; users have until October 18 to download a copy of their data. Founded by former Facebook product manager Dave Morin and one-time Napster execs Dustin Mierau and Shawn Fanning, the service had 15 million users at its peak. “Along our journey we have laughed and cried with you, and learned valuable lessons,” posted the company. “And it is now inevitable to wind down the service to prioritize our work to serve you with better products and services.”

The U.S. will end 2018 as the largest data market in the world, accounting for $12.3 billion of the global $20.6 billion estimate, according to the OnAudience.com report, “Global Data Market Size 2017-2019.” Europe will hit $3.2 billion. Next year, the U.S. is poised to retain the data crown, with $15 billion.

MoffettNathanson lowered its price target for Twitter to $21 from $23. “For a business locked in competition with industry giants and under siege from regulators, reported operating expense growth has been amazingly low,” said Michael Nathanson.

An integration with Getty Images – and its 200 million digitized pics – will make for a richer experience for users of Amazon Echo devices with screens. Alexa will not only be able to provide answers, but current images from Getty. “Our premier collection of editorial, creative and archival content is a natural fit for Amazon’s Echo products, bringing best-in-class visuals to Echo users,” said Peter Orlowsky, SVP of strategic development, Getty Images.

TRT World launched its digital app on NetRange, whose users now have access to the TRT World Live Stream, a channel that covers news, sports and docs with a focus on global responsibility.

ADVERTISING

Nike’s Colin Kaepernick “Just Do It” ad might have led to some smoking sneakers, but so far the company’s stock is rising. The former quarterback at the center of the NFL kneeling controversy, Colin Kaepernick, was featured in the second-most liked post in Nike’s history, and the ad generated $7.6 million in earned media, while Nike spent just $4 million in TV advertising through September 9, according to an analysis by Kantar Media. “The controversy not only bred commerce, but we view the influential consumers of the brand (think sneakerheads, GenZ, Millinnials) stand with Nike on this ad,” said Erinn Murphy, Piper Jaffray senior research analyst, in a note to clients.

Video advertising and monetization platform SpotX announced it is 100% in compliance with the IAB’s ads.txt specification version 1.0.1. To be 100% compliant, SpotX has ensured, since July, that when an ads.txt file is present, all bid requests to a demand side platform (DSP) are only from sellers within an ads.txt file, so the business will run in a fully compliant manner. 85% of SpotX publishers have adopted ads.txt. SpotX notes that while having an ads.txt file on a site does not guarantee it’s fraud-free, sites without ads.txt have about four times more invalid traffic on average.

MAD Network, a blockchain and cryptography solutions company for the advertising industry, is partnering with Omnicom Media Group on a cryptography-based advertising proof-of-concept called CryptoRTB, designed to provide cost transparency for advertisers, optimize media weight per dollar spent and eliminate waste from the value chain. Tested by an Omnicom Media Group EMEA client, the activation aims to deliver a better understanding of the full and complete source and costs of all inventory and data in a transparent and fraud free supply chain.

Tech platform Innovid saw a 30% increase in the number of advertisers running on connected TVs in 2017 versus 2016, and the number of impressions on connected TVs increased 106% to a 27% share since 2016, according its Global Video Benchmark report. “While the essence of watching television is the same as it has always been, a viewer’s tolerance for commercial breaks has diminished,” said the report. “So how can marketers capture attention in an on-demand world? To keep up with the new era of television, a marketer’s main mission is to truly provide value to viewers by engaging them through CTV’s internet-enabled capabilities, such as the ability to search, use many devices, discover personalized recommendations, and binge multiple episodes at a time.”

DISTRIBUTION

Newsmax TV reached an agreement with Comcast to carry its 24/7 conservative cable news channel to Xfinity TV customers on the X1 platform, initially launching to subscribers of Xfinity’s “Digital Starter” package that have an X1 device. The independent news channel is currently in 50 million U.S. cable/satellite homes, with expectations of reaching as many as 80 million such homes by the end of 2019.

Dog TV, the only network with programming intended for dogs, is now launching on Cox across the US, featuring sights and sounds that make dogs happy (and hopefully occupied enough not to chew your shoes), for $4.99/month. The net is expected to have a reach of 70 million by year’s end.

Nationally syndicated Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford starts its 21st broadcast with expansion into the Canadian market. The show will air on The Rural Channel, based in Saskatchewan, starting Friday, September 28, at 8p.

CASTING

With Jodie Whittaker tied up as the new Doctor on Doctor Who, Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away With Murder) will take her place as lead on season two of BBC drama Trust Me….Sherri Shepherd (The View) landed a co-starring role in Netflix comedy Mr. Iglesias opposite Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, reports Deadline.

Casting TV shows is a challenging process – no less so when you’re asking people to just be themselves. Glenda Hersh, co-president and co-CEO of Truly Original, the unscripted production company behind Ink Master (season 11 is airing Tuesdays at 10p on Paramount Network), among others, offers insights on keeping it real in Cynsiders.

DIGITAL

BBC Director General Tony Hall is pushing for streaming services to be regulated and taxed just as linear nets are. “It cannot be right that the UK’s media industry is competing against global giants with one hand behind its back,” Hall says in a speech at the Royal Television Society’s Conference that was released yesterday. “In so many ways – prominence, competition rules, advertising, taxation, content regulation, terms of trade, production quotas – one set of rules applies to UK companies, and barely any apply to the new giants.”

AMC Theatres is teaming with Atom Tickets and NBCUniversal’s Fandango to allow its A-List subscription plan members using Atom or Fandango to enjoy A-List membership perks. “Expanding the online ticketing availability of AMC Stubs A-List to include our great partners at Fandango and Atom Tickets is keeping with our mission of providing our loyal guests with as much convenience and flexibility as possible,” said Stephen Colanero, EVP and CMO of AMC.

Gucci’s new Instagram account, @guccibeauty, launched with influencers of a different variety – historical artwork. While posts on Monday featured treasures from galleries like London’s Tate, according to the company the platform will “show new launches in the beauty arena, together with fragrances, looks from the fashion shows and special collaborations with artists and talents.” And art.
