IN THE NEWS

News of the surprisingly low price for Apple’s upcoming streaming service sent shares of Netflix, Disney and Roku lower. “The pricing of Apple’s streaming TV service at $4.99 per month is a ‘show stopper’ and a major shot across the bow at the likes of Netflix and Disney among others,” Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives told clients in a research note on Wednesday. “In our opinion with an installed base of 900 million active iPhones worldwide we believe Cook & Co. have an opportunity to gain 100 million consumers on the streaming front in the next 3-4 years.”

Over 95% of Americans are troubled by the state of the media, according to a poll from tech PR firm Bospar. Sixty-seven percent of respondents said they believe ethics in journalism will be worse during the 2020 presidential campaign, with 23% saying they think local TV reporters and anchors are the most ethical, and 15% saying national TV reporters and anchors are the most ethical.

Whoopi Goldberg will play 108-year-old prophet Mother Abagail in CBS All Access’ adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand. Also onboard are Jovan Adepo (When They See Us), Owen Teague (Black Mirror), Brad William Henke (Orange Is the New Black) and Daniel Sunjata (Rescue Me), along with previously announced cast members James Marsden (Westworld) and Amber Heard (Aquaman).

Tennis star John McEnroe will narrate Netflix coming-of-age comedy series Never Have I Ever, from Mindy Kaling, Lang Fisher and Universal Television. McEnroe shared the news on Late Night with Seth Meyers.

STREAMING NEWS

Three Paramount Television shows are in the works at HBO Max, revealed Paramount CEO Jim Gianopolous at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch Communications & Entertainment conference. Gianopolous was bullish about streaming’s effect on the studio. “Our content is more desirable, more unique and more available than others, and that puts us in a really good position,” he said, adding that with all the competition for content, including digital players, finding homes for titles is “going to be a lot of fun.”

The Comedy Dynamics library is now available on The Roku Channel. In addition to movies, series, original content, and specials, the linear channel now offers 24/7 stand-up comedy specials curated by Comedy Dynamics’ staff.

TECH TALK

Imagine Communications, provider of ad tech solutions for broadcasters, content owners, MVPDs and vMVPDs, announced that core OTT monetization functionality from its Targeted Delivery portfolio is now available as OTT Monetization Service, powered by Amazon Web Services. The cloud-based, cross-platform managed service features functionality and simplified browser-based management, without requiring local equipment and hosting. Imagine is collaborating with global streaming TV platform provider MOBITV to incorporate content monetization capabilities into live connected TV and OTT video services, to eventually include VOD and cloud DVR. “Video delivery business models have been turned upside down and distributors need every edge they can get to continue offering robust, profitable services,” said David Heppe, Commercial General Manager for Imagine Communications. “Our OTT Monetization Service removes many of the heavy lifts that come with installing, operationalizing and updating next-gen ad tech.”

Data solutions company Lotame announced the launch of Lotame PDX, a private, curated marketplace of high-quality second-party data sellers, as well as niche third-party data providers from around the world. The standard asks data providers to offer “nutrition labels” for their data, informing segment quality, recency, provenance, criteria and beyond. “In today’s transparency-driven and privacy-sensitive climate, finding the right data partner is harder than ever,” said Andy Monfried, founder and CEO, Lotame. “Our post-GDPR world has eroded trust and heightened standards – making the process of vetting partners and understanding data provenance an almost herculean task. Lotame knows that quality and reliability are paramount when choosing a data partner, which is why we have created a venue for highly regarded providers and authenticated sellers.”

OpenVault, a provider of industry analytics and technology solutions for broadband operators, has partnered with TVC Communications to drive increased availability of OpenVault product offerings within the Latin American and Caribbean markets. “The near-term ability of Grupo TVCable to improve user experiences and satisfaction has significantly increased interest in OpenVault solutions,” said George Kassas, founder and CEO of Bireme Systems and an advisor to OpenVault. “TVC’s tradition of excellence in the region will help us augment OpenVault’s market reach and identify new opportunities in a vibrantly growing region.” The agreement follows the announcement earlier this year of OpenVault’s first CALA customer, Grupo TVCable, the largest cable system operator in Ecuador.

LEGAL ISSUES

Viacom and the producers of Lights Out with David Spade are being sued by the parents of a pedestrian killed by industry accountant Jacob Gralitzer. Gralitzer allegedly was “severely intoxicated” when leaving the premiere party for the Comedy Central show, and the defendants “did nothing” to stop him from driving his car home. The victim was standing on a sidewalk when he was hit by a car that had been struck by Gralitzer’s.

The legal battle’s over between Fox and the creative team behind Bones. The dispute started in 2015, when actors Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, Kathy Reichs, who wrote the novels that inspired the series, and executive producer Barry Josephson alleged they had been defrauded of profit participation; it ended Wednesday with dismissal papers filed in LA Superior Court, and a settlement. “The parties have amicably resolved the litigation,” said a rep for Deschanel, Boreanz and Reichs.

Comcast, Fox, CBS, Disney, A&E, C-SPAN and Viacom are suing Maine and 17 towns in the state over a law, slated to go in effect September 19, that will make cable providers sell channels on an a la carte basis. In the complaint, the companies argue that the law violates free speech, and could adversely affect programming diversity.
