Adam Stotsky is exiting his post as president of E!, ending 18 years at NBCUniversal. Stotsky, who informed the company staff of his departure on Monday via an email, will work on his transition with Frances Berweick, President, Lifestyle Networks, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. Berweick will take over Stotsky’s responsibilities in the interim.
Anthem Sports & Entertainment acquired a majority interest in HDNet LLC, parent of AXS TV and HDNet Movies. Mark Cuban and AEG will continue to participate as equity partners, while Steve Harvey enters into a strategic agreement for content development and promotion. “Anthem’s combination of targeted brands, enthusiastic audiences, operational expertise, international footprint and vision makes them an ideal partner to take AXS TV and HDNet Movies to their next levels,” said Cuban. Added Harvey, “My team and I see great opportunity in Anthem. They have incredible shows, experiential entertainment, and a huge reach. Attorneys general from 48 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico went before the Supreme Court on Monday to unveil a major antitrust investigation of Google. The latest scrutiny in Washington facing the tech giant involves top state officials from both parties, initially focusing on advertising and search. However, the investigation could grow to encompass other areas.
Awkwafina’s upcoming Comedy Central series has officially been named Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens. Set to bow in 2020, the 10-episode comedy is loosely based on the actress’ life. The series will feature a slate of predominantly female and diverse directors including Natasha Lyonne (Russian Dolls), Lucia Aniello (Broad City), Jamie Babbit (But I’m A Cheerleader) and more.
Jennifer Lopez will be honored with the iHeartRadio Premio Corazon Latino Award at the 2019 iHeart Radio Fiesta Latina on Saturday, November 2. Cynopsis’ two-day That Big TV Conference got off to a “big” start yesterday, beginning with the Industry Leaders Set the (Big) Stage for 2020 panel, and one hot topic was streaming. Adam Rattner, EVP, Managing Director, Samsung USA, One Publicis Team Samsung, added a twist to a question about how many streaming services people will be willing to pay for. “How many will they pay for – and how many will they watch through other people’s logins?” he asked. Wherever and whatever people watch, said Blake Sabatinelli, CEO of Newsy: “Television is television is television.” During the Big Deals panel, Discovery Chief U.S. Advertising Sales Officer Jon Steinlauf admitted there were challenges to Discovery’s acquisition of Scripps Networks Interactive. “You’re going to lose some great people because these are great organizations,” he acknowledged. But now, “We used to be number five. HBO renewed comedy The Righteous Gemstones for a second season. The series, which debuted on August 18, stars Danny McBride, Jody Hill and David Gordon Green and centers on a world-famous televangelist family with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work.
Grammy winner Brad Paisley is set to star in and executive produce Fish Out Of Water, a comedy being developed by Amazon from A.D. Miles (Arrested Development), Will Arnett and Sony Pictures TV, where Arnett is under an overall deal. Written by Miles, it’s being described as a Larry Sanders take on celebrity vanity projects that takes a behind-the-scenes look at Paisley’s struggle to keep a simple fishing show from turning into his own personal Fyre Festival.
Amanda Peet (The Romanoffs) and Christian Slater (Mr. Robot) will headline the sophomore season of anthology series Dirty John to air on USA Network. Like the first installment, which aired on Bravo, Dirty John: The Betty Broderick Story will be based on a true crime story.
The CW and Warner Bros. Television are developing a gothic horror drama based on the 1966-71 cult classic soap opera Dark Shadows, reports Deadline. Dark Shadows: Reincarnation will be written by Mark B. Perry (Revenge), who will exec produce with Amasia Entertainment’s Michael Helfant, Bradley Gallo and Tracy Mercer, with Tracy Curtis and Cathy Curtis, daughters of Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis.
Bad Wolf is developing Soho 1918, a gritty drugs, sex and nightclubs drama set in London’s Soho in the aftermath of World War I, reports Deadline. The project hails from rising playwright, screenwriter and director Polly Stenham and Alex Warren, direct of Ruth Wilson-fronted Eleanor. Bad Wok is currently pitching the drama to global streamers and international broadcasters.
Netflix commissioned Lightbox to produce Tell Me Who I Am, a film that explores the story of identical twin brothers. When Alex Marcus wakes up from a coma after a motorcycle accident and has forgotten everything, he relies on Marcus to give him his memory back. However, the idyllic childhood Marcus paints conceals a traumatic family secret. Directed by Ed Perkins and produced by Simon Chinn, the film is set to launch on the streamer on Friday, October 18.

Comcast Spotlight has launched TV Ad Planner, a new industry offering that allows advertisers to purchase TV in a similar manner to buying digital media. It also opens up TV advertising to a new set of local advertisers and small businesses. In addition to being able to buy their own TV ad campaign, small business owners can also create a TV spot for as little as $295 in less than 72 hours. TV Ad Planner is now live in 57 markets and will be rolling out to additional markets later this year.
Premiere subscription video on demand service BET+, a joint venture between BET Networks and Tyler Perry Studios, is set to launch in the U.S. on Thursday, September 19. The streamer will feature more than 1,000 hours of content, including exclusive new original programming and series, movies and specials from BET Networks, as well as leading African American content creators like Tyler Perry, Tracy Oliver, Will Packer and more.
In honor of Scooby’s 50th birthday, Boomerang will make every episode and movie featuring the iconic canine free to stream for a limited time. The event will run throughout the weekend starting Friday, September 13.

Roku is expanding its TV licensing program to Europe. Manufacturers can now license Roku TV reference designs and use Roku OS to build smart TVs for sale in European markets. The news was announced during the IFA trade show in Berlin.
A number of US Senators joined forces to ask Google CEO Sundar Pichai to expand Content ID, YouTube’s copyright infringement technology, to more members of the creative community. The Senators asked that YouTube send representatives to participate in a roundtable to answer their questions. “Google has demonstrated an interest in protecting original content on YouTube. However, by limiting the use of Contend ID to more popular users, Google hinders copyright holders with smaller catalogues from reaping the benefits of its actions,” said Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.). “Talented creators, including Nashville’s song-writing community, are disproportionately at risk of infringement.”
A new sharing option will soon allow Spotify users to recommend tracks and podcasts directly to their friends and followers on Snapchat. The feature lets users either add albums, tracks or podcasts to a story, or share them directly. Users who see a shared song in a story, or receive a listening recommendation from a Snapchat friend, will get to see the full album art. To listen, they can swipe up and tap on the context card. It automatically opens the Spotify app, if it’s installed on their phones.
