IN THE NEWS

The average consumer accesses TV shows and movies from more than four different sources of content, according to Hub’s “Decoding the Default” study. Ease of navigation and favorite show availability drive consumers’ TV default decisions, and will in large part determine the success of both new and existing services, says the report. Two factors have the strongest impact on the source consumers choose as their TV default: ease of finding something to watch, and access to favorite shows. Also playing a significant role are access to live programming, strong content variety, and ease of binge viewing.

Forty-five percent of viewers looking for a TV show go to online video sources as their default option, versus 47% of viewers who are more likely to go to a pay-TV set-top box first, according to the Hub study. That’s a 7 point drop for pay-TV since last year, and a 7 point game for online consumers. As for the upcoming $6.99/month Disney+ service, “Whether its value proposition is strong enough to make Disney+ viewers’ first stop for TV is of course yet to be seen,” said Peter Fondulas, principal at Hub. “But by bundling Disney+ with Hulu and ESPN+, the combined package stands to tick off many of the boxes consumers consider must-haves for a default service.”

AT&T and Starz inked a new carriage deal for DirecTV, AT&T TV and U-verse cable platforms. “Starz is pleased to have found a mutually beneficial way to extend our relationship over the next several years to give millions of AT&T subscribers access to our acclaimed premium original content and vast library of blockbuster films,” Starz COO Jeffrey Hirsch said. “By working together, both companies are in a position to continue to deliver great value to our shared customers.” AT&T also reached a new retrans agreement with Nexstar last week, ending an eight-week dispute that took down Nexstar signals from AT&T services.

Speaking of, Nexstar TV stations have started opening the day by playing the national anthem performed by up-and-coming musicians. “Nexstar’s local teams take great pride in their ability to bring the local communities they serve together and that is why we are excited to partner with BMI and Belmont University to broadcast this new daily series featuring The Star-Spangled Banner that will air 365 days of each year,” said Tim Busch, President of Nexstar Broadcasting. “This unique collaboration supports higher education in business for the music and entertainment industry, while providing aspiring professional artists and songwriters a national distribution platform to showcase their respective talents.”

American Princess was canceled after one season at Lifetime. Renaissance Faire drama, a co-production between A+E Studios and IM Global Television, was created by Jamie Denbo (Orange Is the New Black).

Disney laid off nearly 60 employees within its home entertainment and TV distribution divisions, including 20th Century Fox TV Distribution’s EVP, worldwide marketing Greg Drebin and Jennifer Chai, SVP of worldwide marketing and strategy for 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. It’s the latest wave of layoffs since Disney’s $71.3 billion acquisition of Fox assets. Variety reports Disney will cut another 70-80 jobs at National Geographic as it consolidates operations.

Esports will take market share from TV audiences, predicted Needham & Company media analyst Laura Martin during a CNBC segment. Significant cannibalization will come in the next 3-5 years as the A18-25 audience eschews traditional and OTT TV to play and watch games on esports platforms. “One of three kids under the age of 25 is spending an hour a day playing video games,” noted Martin. “And for every hour you play, you are watching another hour.” To learn more about the business of esports from TV, sports, brand marketing and technology experts, check out the Esports Business Summit in Las Vegas – details are here.
