Good morning. It’s Wednesday August 31, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ONE World Sports announced that the channel will no longer be available on DISH and its Sling platform, announcing that it would now extend its five-year deal with the company after talks fell through. In a statement, the channel noted that it was seeking carriage in a domestic sports package, and in HD across all of its platforms, rather than continue to be packaged as an ethnic channel and in SD.
"The decision is largely driven by DISH’s desire for certain MFN provisions, which limit a network’s ability to expand in a rapidly changing marketplace," the company said. "With an insistence on MFN terms that were imbalanced relative to the network’s carriage, our preference was to provide another in a series of short-term extensions while we worked through a new agreement reflecting our limited availability to DISH subscribers. Regrettably, DISH declined an extension, and we were forced to make the difficult decision to discontinue carriage with DISH at this time."
FOX Sports renewed its NFL broadcasting deal in Latin America for the next four seasons, with the package containing new content and expanded coverage in the region. Launching this season, the agreement offers 100-plus games, including Sunday afternoon regular season games, TNF, NFC post-season matchups and the Super Bowl. Jose Pablo Coello, Valeria Marin, Emilio Leon, Alejandro Correa, Ricardo Garcia, Ernesto del Valle and Juan Carlos Vazquez will take on microphone duties for the package this year.
After announcing that Mike Tirico would be taking over as host of Football Night in America, NBC Sports is now adding Notre Dame to his charges, locking him along with Dhani Jones to join Notre Dame Football on NBC play-by-play announcer Dan Hicks, analyst Doug Flutie, sideline reporter Kathryn Tappen, and pre-game and halftime show host Liam McHugh for the channel’s coverage this season. Tirico will handle play-by-play duties for the Fighting Irish’s first three matchups of the season on NBC, spanning Nevada, Michigan State, and Duke. Hicks will return to the Notre Dame Football on NBC broadcast booth for the Fighting Irish’s final four games of the season on NBC, against Stanford, Miami, Army and Virginia Tech.
FOX Sports is set to take over Houston for a special presentation of FOX NFL Sunday on Sept. 11 at noon. In conjunction with the Houston Super Bowl Host Committee, the show broadcasts from Discovery Green in downtown Houston, home of Super Bowl LIVE and marks the first time the show visits the Bayou City.
NBA TV showcases the 2016 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony on Friday at 7:30p with a lineup that will include showcases for Shaquille O’Neal, Allen Iverson and Yao Ming. Coverage begins with the 2016 Hall of Fame Red Carpet Show at 6:30p hosted by Matt Winer alongside Steve Smith and Rick Kamla. Beforehand, the network honors Iverson starting with a seven-game Hardwood Classics marathon on Sept, 6 at 6a. Sept. 7 pays tribute to O’Neal at 10a, with Ming dedicated programming on Sept. 8.
Jeff Darlington is heading to ESPN, agreeing to a deal that will see him report for SportsCenter and other platforms starting Sept. 1. Darlington has serves as a national field reporter for the NFL Network.
ESPN also lined up the first college basketball game to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 10 for the channel with the game pitting Duke/UNLV at 2:15p. The matchup marks the schools’ first meeting since the 1991 NCAA Final Four.
NBCSN delivers a three-hour Premier League Live: Transfer Deadline Day special today at 5p, covering breaking news w/ insights and analysis on the latest transfers. Rebecca Lowe hosts and will be joined by Kyle Martino, Robbie Earle, and Robbie Mustoe. Meanwhile, NBC’s coverage of Manchester United’s win over Hull City on Saturday averaged 1.16 million viewers to rank as the eighth most-watched live Premier League match in US history.
Showtime’s 60 Minutes Sports examines abuses of international soccer players in its next edition on Sept. 6 at 8p. “This is a very, very sensitive issue for football clubs and for the football industry in general,” says Jake Marsh, an investigator for the International Centre for Sports Security, which tracks the problem of athletes being lured overseas to play only to find themselves in dire situations.
NFL Network debuts Fantasy and Friends on Sept. 5 at 6p, where it will run on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday during the season. The new series is hosted by Maurice Jones-Drew, Dave Dameshek, Adam Rank and Erin Coscarelli with fans able to submit their fantasy questions via SnapChat, call-in and visit a webpage specific to the show which allows fans an opportunity to possibly appear on the show during discussion and debate segments.
On the local front, the red-hot Royals team pushed FOX Sports Kansas City to its highest-rated telecast ever, drawing an 18.4 household rating/166,000 households in the local DMA according to Nielsen. The Royals’ local-market TV ratings rank tops in MLB for the second straight season.
Chicago’s Comcast SportsNet announced that Bears legend Brian Urlacher, along with Alex Brown will join the channel as part of the network’s massive line-up of Bears programming for the 2016 NFL season. Urlacher will be featured in a brand new weekly Bears show this season entitled The Hard Count with Brian Urlacher, presented by RESTORE on Thursday nights at 10:30p. Brown joins as a studio analyst for Bears Pregame Live and Bears Postgame Live.

Lavazza is hitting the US Open via a new global collaboration with Andre Agassi, who will serve as the brand’s spokesperson for the sport. The coffee company activated with Agassi’s return to the US Open, with $1 per coffee sold at the brand’s cafes at the two-week tournament going to the USTA Foundation to benefit the Andre Agassi Foundation for Education. In addition, 150 Agassi clones were dispatched throughout NYC and Arthur Ashe Stadium to mark his return.
In other tennis news, player Madison Keys was informed that the USTA vetoed a temporary tattoo she was set to adorn featuring the logo of her sponsor Orangetheory Fitness, according to ESPN. USTA rules stipulate that while the logo did not exceed three square inches, players who don’t have sleeves must put their sponsors’ logos on their shirt’s front and that "no identification shall be permitted on a player."
FOX unveiled a partnership with the Women’s Sports Foundation ahead of the launch of its upcoming drama Pitch, about a fictional first female player in MLB. The partnership will look to support WSF’s efforts to champion women in sports through its scholarship and grant programs,
NeuLion detailed plans for its new partnership with Nokia to deliver “a professional solution utilizing the NeuLion Digital Platform and Nokia’s OZO virtual reality camera and OZO Player SDK.” The camera features eight sensors and eight microphones for “seamless capture and post-production of immersive 3D 360 virtual reality content. The two companies will now offer content owners and content rights holders an end-to-end jointly integrated platform with a single stitched live video feed from OZO cameras sent directly to NeuLion MC Encoders for the live encoding of sports and entertainment events that is then packaged and delivered by the NeuLion Digital Platform adaptively over the internet to end users on second screens and NeuLion developed apps running on VR headsets.
DGital Media and IMG are partnering with Tony Kornheiser to relaunch “The Tony Kornheiser Show” as a daily podcast starting Sept. 6. The daily program will be available on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn, and others. “On-demand audio gives me the chance to connect with my audience in a very personal, meaningful way,”said Kornheiser. “The relaunch of the show to a platform that gives us more freedom to be the combination of smart and funny that we strive to be as we babble about the sports, politics, news and absurd stories of the day is a perfect match. I’m excited to partner with DGital Media and IMG as we look for ways to give our fans, new and old, more of what they love about the show.”
PBR is teaming with Rare Labs for the release of 8 to Glory, a new mobile game for fans of the sport. The game is now available for iOS and Android devices as a free download and features more than 30 of the top PBR athletes as well as dozens of leading PBR bulls. Former NFL star Jared Allen, who owns some of the rankest bulls competing in the PBR, came up with the concept for the game, and will help market and promote the game as one of professional bull riding’s most ardent supporters.
Roku officially launched FOX Sports GO on its players and Roku TV models in the US. Roku customers who receive FOX Sports TV networks as part of their pay-TV subscription will now be able to access FOX Sports, FS1, FS2, FOX Sports Regional Networks, FOX College Sports, FOX Deportes, and FOX Soccer Plus on their Roku devices through FOX Sports GO.
Mashable picked up eSports content thanks to a deal with Endemol Shine Beyond USA that will see the brand distribute five digital series across Endemol Shine Beyond and Mashable properties, including websites, social and OTT channels. Each series will run across Mashable and its various social channels, beginning with the third season of Legends of Gaming, which will begin in the fourth quarter of 2016.
Boston Celtics forward Jonas Jerebko became the latest NBA player to take on the world of eSports, with the athlete picking up ownership rights to the Renegades franchise, which currently has teams competing in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Call of Duty and Halo. ESPN reports that the Celtics forward signed the players, who are based out of Australia, and moved them into a house and training center in Michigan, with a coach and a manager and locked in a Call of Duty team that will now play under the Renegades banner.
ViewSonic announced a deal with Splyce to provide exclusive use of gaming monitors to its worldwide teams to assist with training. The brand now serves as the headline sponsor for Splyce’s four teams, which include CSGO, League of Legends, Call of Duty, and Overwatch. “ViewSonic will play an important role in our training program,” said Splyce CEO Marty Strenszewilk. “Our players compete in the top leagues across Europe and North America and need to have high quality equipment that always performs. Now that we are able to outfit our teams with ViewSonic monitors, our players can have confidence that they have the best monitors on the market to ensure a competitive edge.”
Turner Sports named Tina Shah as Senior Vice President of Business Affairs and Associate General Counsel.
