08/30/16: NBC taps Tirico as face of FNIA; Olympic Channel begins championship run; NFL tackles Germany

Good morning. It’s Tuesday August 30, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

With two NFL primetime packages set for launch this season, NBC Sports announced that Bob Costas will host the TNF pregame show, joining Tony Dungy and Rodney Harrison at the game site for the franchise. Meanwhile, Mike Tirico will now host Football Night in America on Sunday evenings. The company formally announced that Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth and Heather Cox will call all games for the new Thursday Night Football package, while Michele Tafoya will serve as reporter for SNF. Costas will also work on select Sunday FNIA telecasts during the season, as well as on the pregame show for the season-opening NFL Kickoff game on Sept. 8.

ON THE AIR

The Olympic Channel is already in championship mode, announcing a lineup of competitions from around the globe that will run on the digital network with live coverage of more than 35 events for the remainder of the year. Events this weekend are set to include the Men’s Final Olympic Qualifying Tournament from on Sept. 1,2, and 4 from the IIHF and the ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup 5 on Sept. 3-4. “We look forward to working with our IF partners to help distribute their events and extend their reach to fans around the world. Placing a spotlight on Olympic sports and athletes outside of the Games themselves is one of the key priorities of the Olympic Channel,” said Mark Parkman, GM of the Olympic Channel. “

Digital surges for this year’s Olympic Games in Rio weren’t only a stateside trend, according to egta, with the nine countries that pulled viewership data for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and most-watched moments from the competition experiencing a huge spike for Rio over London online and most countries hitting new online records. BBC Sport’s coverage reached 102 million unique users globally, with 68 million coming from the UK to mark the biggest event ever  for BBC Sport’s digital service. 150 million videos from France Televisions were seen on its websites, apps and external platforms, six times more than the London Games. The Netherlands also set online records with a total audience of 6.5 million unique visitors on the online platforms of NPO.

SiriusXM is doubling down on college football, locking in a five-year broadcast deal with Learfield and IMG for satellite radio broadcast rights and bolsters the number of games available to subscribers of the SiriusXM app. The company will also be able to augment the number of broadcast feeds it carries for games airing on the app, “giving listeners access to both home and visiting team broadcasts in many cases, and allowing fans to hear their announcers more often throughout the season.” For opening week of the 2016 college football season, SiriusXM will air 60 live games spanning Sept. 1-5.

DISH is serving up a month-long free preview of Outdoor Channel from Sept. 7-Oct. 5. The network runs on Channel 396 although full episodes of its series will also be available on DISH Studio Channel 102.

The NFL will tap the services of Lagardere Sports to boost the league’s social media and digital platforms in Germany. The deal will see Lagardere Sports “leverage its digital expertise and robust European network” and work closely with the league to develop a targeted digital media strategy with locally relevant social and digital content designed to expand the league’s German fan base. The company will manage the league’s local social media channels and seek to increase engagement across all of its digital communities.
 
To celebrate the debut of new series Pitch, FOX and the LA Dodgers will host a “Take Your Daughter to a Game” day at Dodger Stadium. The experience begins at 11a, when fans can take part in the Pitch Zone Experience with other activations that include a personalized Pitch baseball trading card, as well as other giveaways. After the game, fans can watch the series premiere of the show on the Dodgers’ DiamondVision screen.
 
McDonald’s locked in an extension with the Philadelphia Eagles that runs through the 2019 season. The sponsorship will kick off with McDonald’s giving away $5,000 worth of SEPTA tokens to fans using the Broad Street Line subway to attend the Philadelphia Eagles game on Sept. 1 with other offers that include the Eagles VIP Fan Experience Sweepstakes, Eagles Bundle Boxes, Eagles Player Cups and Sack for a Big Mac.

Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins will now partner with Uber in a multi-year deal that will see a dedicated Uber lot outside of Hard Rock Stadium. The agreement also comes with a tailgate option costing $150-250 that will allow fans to take their Uber and have a grill waiting for them in their designated parking spot, with a store on-site to purchase supplies.

DIGITAL

Gatorade unleashed Serena Williams Match Point on ESPN’s discover Channel on Snapchat, offering users an 8-bit game. The game is also located at SerenaMatchPoint.com and features 22 levels of play with each level representing one of Williams’ Grand Slam final victories. 

Digital Domain is partnering with World Surf League to offer VR content from the Billabong Pro Tahiti, stop seven of the 2016 Samsung Galaxy WSL Championship Tour, that will include a virtual beachfront view of the action featuring first-person footage, 360 degree close-ups and exclusive Q&As with the pros. The videos will be available for on-demand viewing on the official World Surf League Facebook Page.

ESPORTS

The Ad Council is partnering with the gaming industry to launch Game for Good, looking to “harness the power of games and the gaming community to drive awareness, engagement and impact on the critical social issues addressed by Ad Council campaigns.” Partners now include Penny Arcade, Twitch, Polaris/Maker Studios, Rooster Teeth, YouTube, 3BLACKDOT, PlayQ, Zynga and Games for Change. Kicking off the initiative, the Ad Council is bringing its Love Has No Labels campaign to PAX West to integrate its messages of diversity and inclusion throughout the event including: two PAX panel discussions. Meanwhile, a dedicated Game for Good advisory group will work on opportunities for collaboration across many different Ad Council campaigns over the course of the next 12 months.

Scuf Gaming locked in a sponsorship and partnership with Luminosity Gaming that will soon see the launch of a custom LG controller for Xbox One & PC. “A global leader in custom controllers, Scuf Gaming has been a staple in the console eSports scene for years. With the recent signing of our Halo team along with our existing world class Call of Duty team, it only made sense to partner with the market leader, SCUF Gaming,” said Steve Maida Owner of Luminosity Gaming.

GenVid Technologies announced funding of $1.5 million to enable “a new kind of eSports livestream broadcast,” with investors that include March Capital Partners and OCA Ventures, according to VentureBeat. The company is looking to allow developers to control the camera angles of eSports broadcasts “as if they were sitting in the broadcast editing booth of a major sports event” in a move to help companies earn better storytelling capability.

Pac-12 Networks added a pair of executives with the additions of Alden Mitchell Budill as Head of Distribution and Wesley Mallette as VP of Communications. In addition, Pac-12 Networks promoted Ned Watkins to Senior Vice President of Integrated Marketing and Sales and Ryan Currier and Mark Kramer to Vice Presidents and co-heads of the Digital department.
