08/25/16: BuzzFeed reorganizes; YouTube updates TV app; Spotify struggles with short-term music rights contracts as it moves toward IPO


Good morning. It’s Thursday August 25, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.


Verified Pages/Accounts: On social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, some pages and profiles and profiles are verified to confirm that they’re authentic. Well-known celebrities, public figures, brands, businesses, and media figures tend to have verified accounts. The badge of a verified account is the same across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram: A little checkmark next to the username.


BuzzFeed is reorganizing. As first reported by Vanity Fair, the company will separate into two departments, BuzzFeed Entertainment Group (BFEG) and BuzzFeed News. Under the reorganization, BuzzFeed will directly integrate its video production teams with both divisions. (“In this new structure, video won’t be the job of just one department,” CEO Jonah Peretti wrote in an internal staff memo.) Along with the reorganization comes a new department, BuzzFeed Entertainment, helmed by BuzzFeed Motion Pictures President Ze Frank, which will create all of BuzzFeed’s entertainment content, from short-and-long form video to lists and quizzes. And BuzzFeed News will expand under Editor-in-Chief Ben Smith, launching health and video news teams, as well as a global news operation.

YouTube launched a number of updates to its TV app. The app will now present users with 14 content tabs at the top of the screen, with categories including sports, news, music, and comedy. (Previously, the content categories were hidden in the menu bar.) Below each of the new content tabs is a “top stories” section with trending content. The update also introduces a live streams section, showing users real-time live-streaming video. The update has launched for devices such as Roku, Google’s Chromecast, and smart TVs, but not for Apple TV. (As Engadget points out, Google maintains Apple TV’s YouTube app separately.)


, an open ad management company for multiscreen campaigns, has partnered with the interactive video solutions provider Fuisz Video. Under the partnership, Sizmek says it will use Fuisz’s proprietary technology to let brand marketers and agencies serve “object level interactive videos” to consumers. (For instance, an auto brand could let audiences click on car features to learn more.)  “Fuisz’ object tracking and shoppable video capabilities provide our clients with the ability to drive conversion by making it simple for users to discover and take action,” said Jaime Singson, Sizmek’s Director of Product Marketing, in a statement.

’s International expansion continues apace. The company has gained the exclusive German, Austrian, U.K., and Japanese streaming rights to the upcoming fantasy drama series American Gods, based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name. The series will air on Starz in the U.S.
The digital media company Studio71 announced a new digital series. Rush: Inspired by Battlefield will debut on Verizon’s Go90 mobile video service on September 20. The series, as the title might suggest, is inspired by the Battlefield video game franchise, and comes from filmmakers and Corridor Digital co-founders Sam Gorski and Niko Pueringer.

Ever wonder how Spotify gets the rights to all that music? Well, it doesn’t come cheap. Spotify pays record labels and artists almost 55% of its revenue – and then another 15% to music publishers and songwriters. So it’s maybe not so surprising that the company lost $200 million last year, despite taking in $2 billion in revenue. And according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, the music streaming service has been fighting for more favorable deals, even as some major label execs actually think they should be paying more. In the meantime, the Journal reports that Spotify has been operating on short-term contract extensions with all three major record labels until a longer-term deal can be reached. Spotify, which in March received $1 billion in convertible debt financing, has been facing pressure to mount an IPO sooner rather than later. But first the company desperately needs to resolve its contract issues; after all, who’s going to invest in a music streaming service that hasn’t secured any long-term rights to music?

Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming for Aug. 17-23 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Trends and insights from the 4,749,906 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– Unsurprisingly, NBC led in passion, with 24.9% of the “excited” ERs driven by the Rio Olympics.
– Outside of the Olympics, MTV was the home of fear, with 6.1% of all “afraid” ERs, thanks to its horror/mystery Scream.
Netflix had viewers glued to their screens, with 27.9% of all “addicted” ERs due to its hit Stranger Things.
– Multiple NBCUniversal networks led in “brilliant” thanks to Olympics programming, including NBC (32.4%), NBC Sports Network (13.6%), USA (7%) and MSNBC (6.5%).


A lot more people have used streaming video than transactional video on-demand, according to a new study from the market research firm GfK. GfK finds that only a minority of U.S. consumers (46%, to be exact) have ever rented or bought a digital TV show or movie. But that doesn’t mean those people are living in caves; GFK finds that, of those 46%, 78% stream video instead. Of the consumers who have bought or rented digital video, a full 92% say they are also using streaming video. And finally, despite their much-rumored demise, physical discs don’t seem to be a distant memory quite yet: 86% of consumers say they have bought or rented a Blu-ray or DVD in the past. (78% said the same for VHS tapes). You can check out the study here.
