Good morning. It’s Friday, August 22, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. Thanks to Joe Favorito for covering for me the past two days.
A hard-hitting Nevada team against Pennsylvania star pitcher Mo’ne Davis spelled ratings gold for ESPN, and grabbed a 3.4 overnight Nielsen rating and an average of nearly five million viewers (4,988,000) P2+ for the channel to make it the highest-rated Little League World Series telecast ever on ESPN. That number is also up 143% over last year’s corresponding game between California and Connecticut. Locally, the game drew a 16.3 rating in Las Vegas and a 14.9 rating in Philadelphia, both records for Little League World Series telecasts in those markets.

CBS Sports serves up farewell coverage of its long ties with the US Open Tennis Championships starting Saturday at 11a with men’s and women’s third-round action and wraps up with the men’s singles championship on Monday, Sept. 8 at 5p. Over 37 hours are on deck with lead play-by-play announcer Bill Macatee and Mary Carillo and John McEnroe in the booth. Jim Courier returns as analyst and calls the action alongside Ian Eagle. Mary Joe Fernandez serves as reporter, and Adam Zucker as a contributor. On Sunday at 1:30p, the network slated CBS Salutes the US Open, looking back at the moments and champions that have highlighted CBS Sports’ 46 years of US Open coverage through the announcers who called the action. Bill Macatee hosts. In addition, legendary announcer Dick Enberg returns on Sunday, Aug. 31 to call a match along with McEnroe and Carillo.
HBO Sports and executive producers Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey will once again team up, bringing four new State of Play documentaries to the channel. The franchise will run Tuesdays at 10p, starting Nov. 11. The first outing, State of Play: Culture Shock, explores how the NFL “is confronting its biggest challenge: making the game safer.” Following the documentary, Peter Berg sits down with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for an exclusive 20-minute one-on-one interview.
Former Auburn head football coach Gene Chizik and former Georgia quarterback David Greene are coming home, so to speak, inking deals to appear on SEC Network. Chizik serves as a studio analyst on Mondays and Tuesdays and Greene will host Film Room regularly airing Wednesdays at 9:30p.
Bethanie Mattek-Sands is joining Tennis Channel’s US Open coverage team Monday, Aug. 25 -Wednesday, Aug. 27. Mattek-Sands will appear on Tennis Channel’s set on the second level of Arthur Ashe Stadium to offer original insider analysis during the network’s coverage, with possible in-booth duties.
NBC Sports Group slated more than seven hours of coverage of the 2014 P&G Gymnastics Championships this week starting tonight at 7p on NBCSN and running through the weekend on NBC, including live primetime coverage of the women’s all-around final on Saturday at 8p. Al Trautwig, Tim Daggett, Nastia Liukin and Andrea Joyce will host coverage from CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa.
CBS lined up CBS Fall Preview ahead of the new fall season, hosted by none other than Jim Nantz. The primetime special highlights the network’s addition of Thursday Night Football as well as all five new fall series and runs Sept. 1 at 8:30p.

With NASCAR driver Carl Edwards now on the Joe Gibbs Racing team, executives announced that telecoms technology firm Arris will serve as his primary sponsor, according to the AP. The brand will serve as his primary sponsor in 17 of the 36 scheduled Sprint Cup races.
Big Tent Entertainment locked in a deal with NFL Players Inc. for a first ever co-branding effort that brings Internet sensation Domo and all active NFL players to a series of products. The line includes plush, novelty items, apparel, hats, bags, drinkware, and collectibles, along with stickers and embeds for digital games and mobile apps. The products launch this fall and will be sold through numerous retail channels including convenience, drug, sporting goods, and amusement retailers. Big Tent will have the rights to use all NFL players as part of the co-brand, including 1,800 distinct player names, likenesses, numbers, photographs, voices, signatures, original art and biographical data.
Professional Bull Riders’ entertainer Flint Rasmussen may be meeting his match. With the help of Cooper Tires and Flint, the PBR has created a promotion titled, Flint’s: Up Next (F:UN), to find fans who think they have what it takes to entertain a PBR crowd just like Flint. Fans could win a trip to Las Vegas and a chance to appear on Flint’s Outside the Barrel show at the Tyson Fan Zone & Marketplace during the 2014 Built Ford Tough World Finals in October.
July delivered good news for media companies. Turner Sports reports that Bleacher Report set a new all-time best, notching 41.6 million unique visitors in July, according to comScore’s most recent cross-platform data. Compared to 2013 numbers, July’s performance is up 89% year-over-year for the site, sparked by record-breaking usage across mobile platforms. Bleacher Report’s Team Stream mobile app hit an all-time high with 749 million minutes spent, nearly double the usage in May 2014. Additionally, Bleacher Report’s mobile properties generated an 8% month-over-month increase in uniques in July.
With an assist from Tour de France, the World Cup and NBA Free Agency, the Yahoo Sports NBC Sports Network digital alliance ranked No. 2 among all sports digital sites in July. The platforms reached 58.3 million uniques, up 11% versus the prior year, according to multiplatform data released by comScore.
In addition, NBC Sports Digital announced that it will formally debut its Tactical Cam during next Monday’s Liverpool/Manchester City match. The high sideline camera will be used to show all 22 players on the pitch at the same time, enabling fans to see formations and evaluate each team’s attacking and defending tactics as the game progresses. The "Tactical Cam" will be available in both the NBC Sports Live Extra desktop and mobile & tablet presentations of the game.
ESPN officially unveiled its app developed natively for the Pebble smartwatch. The app will include scores from across major professional leagues and college conferences including the NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, college football and college basketball. “The ESPN app for Pebble extends our presence on wearable technology and reflects a belief in product and content mobility,” said Ryan Spoon, Senior Vice President of Digital Product Management, ESPN. “Whether it is a watch, a phone or a 65-inch TV, our focus is for ESPN to be there when fans are. This is another great example of that.”

CBSSports.com is going to be hosting its first-ever live Fantasy Football draft event on Saturday at CBS Scene Restaurant & Bar at Patriot Place in Foxborough. The event starts at 10a and will host VIP draft experiences for 10 leagues who entered to win, and will be open to the public as well. In addition, CBSSports.com fantasy writers Dave Richard and Jamey Eisenberg will be on hand to offer live advice and draft analysis. 98.5 The Sports Hub will also be broadcasting the event live.
TuneIn locked in two new partnerships with Bundesliga, the German premier football league and the UK’s Barclays Premier League. The deals will see English speaking TuneIn fans worldwide be able to listen to Germany’s top players and clubs via Bundesliga’s official TuneIn Channels while German speaking fans can enjoySPORT1.fm, the network sanctioned by Bundesliga for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Barclay’s Premier League fans around the world will be able to listen to live matches and commentary in English, Spanish, and Mandarin.
Multiple reports state that Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment CEO Tim Leiweke will step down next year. The company announced Thursday that Leiweke will stay until June 30 or a successor is appointed. The MLSE properties include the Toronto Maple Leafs, Raptors and Toronto FC. Leiweke stated that he plans to own and operate his own business.
