Stephen Colbert‘s new Late Show on CBS is beginning to look a lot like his old one, at least behind the scenes. The comedian is relying on his Colbert Report production team to run his new venture – among staffers making the move are Tom Purcell, former executive producer and writer at Colbert Report, who will hold the same roles at CBS, and Meredith Bennett, who will be upped to exec producer.
The $20 billion Entertainment Studios Network/ National Association of African-American Owned Media racial discrimination suit against Comcast and Time Warner Cable and Al Sharpton, among others, was reopened on Wednesday. "This is an historic case where federal judge Terry Hatter has an enormous opportunity to tell corporate America that the racism and discrimination must stop and the economic inclusion must begin," Entertainment Studios founder and CEO Byron Allen tells Cynopsis. The suit claims the defendants conspired to discriminate based on race regarding channel carriage. Back in February, Comcast said, "We will defend vigorously against the scurrilous allegations in this complaint."
Cloudy skies? Preliminary discussions have taken place regarding the sale of the Weather Channel, according to Bloomberg Business. The Weather Company, which owns the cabler as well as related web sites, was acquired by NBCUniversal, Bain Capital and Blackstone Group in 2008 for about $3.5 billion.
Chris Harrison, longtime MC of The Bachelor franchise, is returning as host of the 2016 Miss America Competition. The special airs live from Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Sunday, September 13 at 9p on ABC. “It is an honor to be back as host of Miss America for the seventh time," said Harrison. “This is a special event that has become near and dear to my heart.”
Another day, another headline for Donald Trump. In Time magazine’s cover story, The Donald suggested that he is such a ratings draw that CNN should pay him to appear at its September 16 presidential debate. Trump proposed a $10 million fee that would be divvied up among charities.
Ricky Martin will make his first-ever appearance at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles on September 10. The Livin La Vida Loca singer will take part in a special onstage conversation and preview of his new series, La Banda, at the Univision Fall TV Previews panel.

Hulu ordered a half-hour comedy pilot from Seth Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg. Future Man centers on a janitor by day, world-ranked gamer by night who is tasked with preventing the extinction of humans from mysterious visitors from the future. Rogen and Goldberg will direct the pilot.
WE tv has greenlit 10 one-hour episodes of Ex Isle. The dating/relationship series is set on a secluded tropical island, where troubled couples can focus (or not) on their issues. Carmen Electra hosts. Produced by 495 Productions with SallyAnn Salsano (Jersey Shore) onboard as exec producer. Reality series is set to debut in 2016.
Howard Gordon, the producer behind Homeland and Tyrant, is teaming with Nkechi Carroll (Bones) to develop a medical drama for Fox. The untitled drama is described as a medical franchise centered around three young, brilliant doctors.
Rod Man, the Season 8 winner of Last Comic Standing, has landed the lead in a pilot ordered by NBC. The untitled project is being produced by Wanda Sykes and The Game EP Kenny Smith Jr. Man plays a comedian who moves from Georgia to Los Angeles with his wife and daughter to help take care of his mother.
HBO Latino has acquired two seasons of web series Gran’pa Knows Best from Elaine Del Valle Productions and William D. Caballero. The show, premiering Wednesday, September 16, is a “first of its kind” acquisition deal for interstitial programming for the net.
Esquire Network premieres dark drama Spotless in November. The 10-part scripted series stars Marc-Andre Grondin (C.R.A.Z.Y.), Denis Menochet (Inglourious Basterds), Miranda Raison (24: Live Another Day) and Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey).
A “Silver Screen Favorites” block will air every Sunday in September at 7p on getTV. Peter Sellers is honored with presentations of Dr. Strangelove and There’s A Girl in My Soup on Sunday, September 6. Other highlights include: William Daniels in 1776 on September 13, Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity and The End of the Affair on September 20, and Oliver Reed in Oliver! on September 27.
In memory of civil rights leader Julian Bond, OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network is airing an encore of Oprah Winfrey Presents: Legends Who Paved The Way on Saturday, August 22 at 1p.
Canal Once, Mexico’s cultural family entertainment network, debuts the third season of Sacro y profane on Monday, August 24 at 2al
The eight-episode, sophomore season of French supernatural series The Returned will debut on SundanceTV this fall. The cable network acquired U.S. broadcast rights from Zodiak Rights.
Animal Planet’s Pit Bulls & Parolees returns Saturday, September 19 at 10p. During its seventh season, room is running out at Villalobos, so pit bull advocate Tia Torres opens satellite locations in rural Louisiana to care for more than 400 dogs.
Frasier alum Peri Gilpin nabbed a recurring role on Scorpion‘s second season. The CBS series returns Monday, September 21 at 9p.
Mare Winningham, who appeared in American Horror Story‘s Freak Show and Coven, is returning for this season’s Hotel. The FX drama is back Wednesday, October 7 at 10p.
John Leguizamo landed a series regular role on Season 2 of Bloodline. The Netflix series is slated for release during the first half of 2016.
Bridge alum Stephanie Sigman will recur in Season 2 of American Crime. The drama is slated to return midseason on ABC.
Olivia Thirlby has joined Amazon legal drama Trial. The series marks the streaming service’s first-ever straight-to-series order.
Rentrak partnered with MovieTickets.com to co-develop a suite of marketing, planning and ROI measurement tools for the movie and television industries. Rentrak will link its merged TV viewing and box office sales ticket information with MovieTickets.com’s individual-level ticket purchasing information. “This partnership combines two of Rentrak’s areas of expertise: movies and television,” said Rentrak CEO and Vice Chairman Bill Livek. “
Disney Junior debuts the first six episodes of Goldie & Bear on WATCH Disney Junior platforms beginning Saturday, September 12. One new episode premieres on the WATCH Disney Junior app and WATCH Disney Junior.com each Monday from September 21 through October 12. The series premieres in November on Disney Channel and Disney Junior.

Burton Jablin has been promoted from President of Scripps Networks, to Chief Operating Officer of Scripps Networks Interactive. Kathleen Finch, currently President of HGTV, DIY Network and Great American Country, has been upped to Chief Programming, Content and Brand Officer and will take overall responsibility for content across all six of Scripps’ domestic networks.
The Barbarian Group has restructured its leadership team. Ian Daly, who last served as Group Strategy Director at TBWA\?Media Arts Lab, has joined the company as Chief Strategy Officer. Darren Himebrook, previously in digital production at The Martin Agency, has been hired as Head of Operations. Edu Pou has been promoted to Chief Creative Officer from Executive Creative Director, and Robert Christ, previously Tech Director, has become Chief Technology Officer.
