Apple will fund a new documentary about Cash Money Records, the record label of hip hop and rap artists such as Nicki Minaj, Drake, and DJ Khaled. The documentary is the next step in Apple’s nascent original content efforts; the tech giant is already moving forward with Planet of the Apps, a reality competition series about app developers, and recently gained the rights to Carpool Karaoke, a spinoff of the Carpool Karaoke segment on CBS’s Late Late Show with James Corden. News of the Cash Money Records doc was first reported by Bloomberg.

Nat Geo WILD recently launched its first major foray into the digital space, a new web series called wild_life with Bertie Gregory. The series follows the titular Bertie Gregory, a young wildlife photographer, as he tracks down and films predators on Vancover Island. VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
Intel is throwing its hat into the VR hardware ring. At its developer conference, the company unveiled Project Alloy, a new virtual reality headset. Unlike other mainstream headsets, Project Alloy is intended to serve as a reference design for manufacturers, as a opposed to a pre-made item shipped by the company. What makes the headset special – and unique – is that it works without either a mobile phone or an external computer, instead using its own computing chips. The company will open source Project Alloy next year, allowing third parties to build their own headsets based on Intel’s designs.
Closing the Dream, a new short 360-degree video documentary about the U.S. Basketball team’s preparations for the 2016 Olympics, has debuted for the Samsung Gear VR headset. The doc is narrated by star player Kevin Durant; it was produced by Viceland.

MTV launched its new true-crime series, Unlocking the Truth, yesterday at 11 PM ET/PT. And in addition to the linear broadcast, MTV also simulcast the premiere on Facebook and YouTube – a first for the network. There will be no free digital simulcasts past the premiere, though – this is a one-time effort to get viewers on-board.
DEALS + COMPANY ACQUISITIONS
Twitch, the gaming-centric live broadcasting service owned by Amazon, announced that it will acquire Curse, an Alabama-based company providing gaming services such as in-game chat, news, and guides. Curse operates over 65 gaming sites, as well websites with news and tools built around individual game titles. Deal terms weren’t disclosed.

Snapchat is planning a major staff expansion in New York. The Los Angeles-based company agreed to create 396 New York State jobs in exchange for $5 million worth of tax breaks from Empire State Development, a state-owned organization. In order to receive the tax break, Snapchat must create the new jobs over the next five years – and keep them through the beginning of 2027.

Canvs, the language analytics company that measures emotions around content, analyzed tweets about TV and streaming programming for Aug. 10-16 using Twitter data from Nielsen. Trends and insights from the 9,906,871 tweets expressing a specific Emotional Reaction (ER) include:
– NBC was the home of beauty, with 43.5% of all “beautiful” ERs across all networks driven by, no surprise, the Rio Olympics. Other NBCU networks that are broadcasting Olympic events are also in on the beauty, led by NBC Sports, which had 18.7% of all “beautiful” ERs.
– Outside of the Olympics, Netflix drove 1.2% of all “weird” ERs across all networks, thanks primarily to its hit Stranger Things.
– Also outside of the Olympics, MTV drove 1% of all “crazy” ERs across all networks, mostly due to new episodes of Catfish: The TV Show.
– NBC was also, once again, the home of moist eyes, with 51.9% of “cried” ERs prompted by Olympic performances.
According to data from Pivotal Research Group, Internet-connected devices significantly increased overall TV viewership in July. PRG finds that total use of TV (which is defined by all sources of “content inputs”) was up 1% for 18-49-year-old viewers. Overall TV use rose 2.6% in terms of average household. But for the 18-49 group in particular, PRG found that use of Internet-connected TV devices – such as Roku and Apple TV – rose by 65%, accounting for an 8.5% share of all TV use during the month. In July 2015, it was 4.9%.
The online video analytics company Tubular Labs took a look at the most watched online video publishers in July 2016. Some of their findings:
– Overall: The top 100 video brands and creators together generated 48.5 Billion total cross-platform views in July, representing a 20% increase over June view numbers. These videos had an average V30 (views per video) of 4.2 Million and an average ER (engagement rating) of 1.1x, with 1x representing average engagement.
– Facebook: Facebook rankings are separated into two categories: Facebook Publishers and Facebook Personalities. BuzzFeed’s Tasty was unseated from its #1 spot by UNILAD, which had views of 2.6 Billion followed by The LADbible at #2 with 2.1 Billion views. Tasty ranked #3 with 1.7 Billion views followed by NowThis and Tastemade, which took the #4 and #5 spots respectively.
– Instagram: Soccer continued to rule on Instagram with 433 Football (Soccer) maintaining its #1 rank at 349 Million views. The Shade Room, an entertainment and celebrity gossip site was new to Instagram rankings this month. It ranked #2 with 298 Million views. Hood Clips came in at #3 with 284 Million views.
– YouTube: Entertainment and family content dominated YouTube rankings this month. Ryan ToysReview was at #1 again with 585 Million views. T-Series, India’s largest music label and movie studio climbed four places to #2 with 547 Million views. Netd müzik, a property of Turkey’s Dogan TV Holding, WWE and Webs and Tiara’s took the #3, #4 and #5 spots respectively on YouTube rankings.
