08/17/15: Apple pushing back its Internet TV service, Comcast going up against YouTube, and Dish avoids a Sinclair blackout

is reportedly waiting until 2016 to launch an Internet TV service. The word on the street had been a new service would be introduced in September, but it appears that goal won’t be met, thanks in part to a dearth of content deals.
is preparing to launch a major new video platform to rival YouTube and Facebook’s online video. Currently called Watchable, its partners will include BuzzFeed, AwesomenessTV, The Onion, Vice, NBC Sports, and Comcast-backed Vox. Content will initially be available to Xfinity X1 box owners, and eventually on iOS and Android devices.
Refinery29 launched a new talent collective for social influencers called Here and Now. The group includes YouTube stars and content creators like Lauren Curtis (3.1 million subscribers on YouTube), Casey Holmes (nearly 1 million subscribers on YouTube), Danielle Bernstein of We Wore What (over 1 million followers on Instagram) and Justina Blakeney of The Jungalow (1.3 million followers on Pinterest), among others. Influencers will create new custom content and distribution opportunities for R29’s brand partners, with Smashbox the first to join in a new partnership. “The power of influencers, particularly in beauty and fashion, is undeniable. They have real, authentic relationships with their subscribers and fans, and their reach is immense,” said Beth DiNardo, Global General Manager at Smashbox.


Firetalk, an “always-on” live-streaming platform, landed a new partnership with The Young Turks Network, the mega online news network with more than 90 million views per month across multiple channels. Through the deal, the hosts and producers will take questions and respond to comments from viewers live on-air, and the audience will participate in real-time using Firetalk’s platform. The Firetalk-enhanced live broadcasts of The Young Turks will stream Tuesdays and Fridays from 3-5p PT starting last Friday. Firetalk recently announced a similar agreement with What’s Trending.
, via the Des Moines Register, will be the first media company to offer live 360-degree video coverage of the Presidential Soapbox during the 2015 Iowa State Fair. Speeches run through Saturday, August 22 and will also be available on-demand daily online.
Reuters launched the Reuters Partner Marketplace, a place for subscribers to access video content from exclusive partners. Providers include Next Media Animation, Hollywood.TV and Rumble and the content spans from animated news content and celebrity entertainment news to science, technology and viral videos.
Connor Hines, who created the YouTube series “Local Attraction,” has signed on to create a comedy pilot for ABC. Called For Now, it revolves around a group of twentysomethings living in New York City. Hines will write, executive produce, and star in the show.
The ambitious web series “Women on Sex,” which chronicles how South African women perceive sex and status, has been released on YouTube.

The launch of Windows 10 for Microsoft has been a relative success but some users have reported issues with watching online video on the new operating system. Complaints range from audio not syncing and the video not working at all to a green screen appearing instead of the video. Sony has asked users of its Halo system to not make the upgrade before driver updates have been released.
Yahoo released its Livetext app, which allows users to share video images and text without sound in real time.
Dominant Korean chat app Kakao has developed a feature that allows users to watch streaming videos simultaneously on different devices while conversing with each other.


Netflix Inc. plans to shut down the last of its data centers by the end of the summer. This will make it one of the first companies to have all of its information technology being run remotely from the public cloud. Netflix has been moving its data to the cloud since 2009. In other Netflix news, Hawaii News Now discovered that the state workforce spent between 100 and 300 hours of a recent workweek watching content from Netflix. It was the video-streaming service most used by Hawaii state employees. Result? The state cut off employees’ access to Netflix and Hulu.
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. has taken a majority stake in iStreamPlanet, the video-streaming company, in order to help deliver its OTT programming, shift its core technology infrastructure to the cloud and develop new products and services for existing and new businesses. The pair has worked together in the past during the PGA Championships. iStream will remain a standalone entity so it can continue working with other brands.
The TiVo Bolt DVR, which will replace the Roamio, will have three different models, according to FCC filings. It appears that two will be CableCARD models and the third will be an over-the-air edition. All will be much smaller than current TiVo hardware.
Sesame Street’s move to HBO, HBO Go and HBO Now means that Sesame Workshop will also retire its own subscription-based Internet streaming service, Sesame Go, a year-old app that charges viewers $3.99 each month or $29.99 annually to check out Sesame Street content. The app won’t totally be killed but will provide far less content for free or be a portal to the Sesame Street website.


Lotame, a data management platform (DMP), debuted a new Semantic Classification Tool built into its core DMP. “Lotame’s proprietary technology takes audience discovery to the next level by moving beyond page level attributes and focusing instead on the context of specific articles,” said Rishit Shah, Lotame’s Vice President of Product Management. “Through the technology, Lotame clients can build deeper first-party insights and can leverage those insights to underpin highly targeted ad delivery.”

Shock advertising apparently doesn’t work so well anymore. A new paper, “Shock Advertising: Not So Shocking Anymore­an investigation among Generation Y,” published in the Mediterranean Journal of Social Sciences, shows that the majority of respondents for each type of shock either did not remember anything about the brand or the product being advertised, just the imagery itself.


A new report from SNL Kagan confirms the “cord-cutting crisis” isn’t abating. The study estimates that the pay-TV industry lost a collective 625,000 subscribers in the quarter ending June 30, with the direct broadcast satellite sector getting hit with nearly half of those losses. It is estimated that Dish Network lost 151,000 subscribers for the quarter and DirecTV lost 133,000 subscribers.
