CYNOPSISDIGITAL
08.16.16 Good morning. It’s Tuesday August 16, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Rich Media Ads: Rich media ads are ads that include advanced features such as audio, video, or other elements that encourage viewers to engage and interact with the content.
Let’s be honest: Even cord-cutters don’t necessarily want to watch an NFL game on a smartphone or desktop. That’s why Twitter is currently negotiating with Apple to bring its app to the Apple TV, according to a report from the New York Times. Earlier this year, Twitter acquired the streaming rights to next season’s Thursday Night Football games; the company has since inked numerous live programming partnerships, for both sports and news content. If the deal with Apple goes through, it will mark the first time that Twitter’s live video content will be available for living room viewing.
According to a forecast from the market intelligence firm International Data Corp. (IDC), revenue from augmented and virtual reality will amount to a whopping $162 billion in 2020. That’s up from a projected $5.2 billion in revenue in 2016. IDC projects that the AR/VR industry will generate a compound annual growth rate of 181.3% over the 2015-2020 period. The firm projects that VR and AR hardware will generate over 50% of worldwide revenues during that span, and that the Asia Pacific region (excluding Japan), Western Europe, and the U.S. will account for 75% of all revenues.

Hulu snared the rights to the sixth and last season of Sony Pictures Television’s Community. The series spent the first first five seasons of its original run on NBC, before moving to Yahoo for its final season. With its acquisition of season 6, Hulu now holds the rights to all six seasons.
“By weaving contextually relevant interactivity into the fabric of the video itself, entertainment marketers can lead the user to a much richer media execution that accompanies the video.” That’s Jaime Singson, Director of Product Marketing at Sizmek. In a new guest piece for Cynopsis, Singson lays out his thoughts on the future of video advertising. Check it out here.
Google announced that, come September 12, Google+ will lose Hangouts On Air, its live video service. Instead, the service’s features will be merged into YouTube Live.
Verizon has renewed its carriage agreement with Pop, the TV network owned by Lionsgate and CBS. In addition to Verizon’s Fios cable service, Pop will also be available on Verizon’s digital platforms, including the Go90 mobile video service and Verizon’s TV Everywhere app.
Discover giveth, and Discover taketh away. In June, Snapchat redesigned Discover, its section for publisher-controlled channels. Instead of small disks featuring publishers’ logos, the section now features larger, magazine-like images displaying a preview of content from the day’s offerings. The redesign also offered users the ability to subscribe to specific channels. Apparently the result has been both a blessing and a curse. According to a presentation that Snapchat sent to its Discover partners in June, the median Snapchat Discover channel doubled its daily users within two weeks of the redesign. On the other hand, engagement actually dropped: The number of views per user dropped 14 percent, time spent dropped six percent, and completion rate dropped 32 percent. According to Digiday, the trend has remained the same throughout the summer.
Twitter will let brands post sponsored stickers. The emoji-like illustrations initially debuted on Twitter in June. Pepsi is the first brand to run sponsored sticker ads. At the moment, only specific brands with their own Twitter sales reps will be able to purchase Promoted Stickers.

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).
