Republic, from Blindspot’s Alex Berger, Martin Gero and Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, landed a put pilot commitment from NBC. “Hopeful political drama” follows a moderate Republican president and his new female chief of staff facing an administration in crisis.
 
Winning entries in the Universal Cable Productions second annual “Pitch Fest” have been placed in development at the studio. Futures, by Erin Wood, focuses on 5 brilliant millennials determined to break free from private shareholders who own them. Sci-fi thriller The Haints, from David Merritt II, is set in the early 90s, when 6 African-American teens implicated in a classmate’s murder are determined to bring her back alive. UCP targeted entries focused on diversity, partnering with NBCUniversal Talent Infusion Programs.
 
 
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
 
El Chapo is back for season 2 on Univision Sunday, September 17. But this time around, the series focused on the drug kingpin will air with English subtitles. “Based on intense interest in this story, we are taking an unprecedented step to expand the reach of our breakout series El Chapo by making it accessible with English subtitles on Univision Network,” said Camila Jimenez Villa, co-president and chief content officer of Fusion Media Group. “This move speaks to the uniqueness of a series that has captured the attention of audiences around the world.”
 
New Lifetime competition series American Beauty Star launches Thursday, September 21 at 10:30p. It’s the first reality TV project for exec producer Norton Herrick and Herrick Entertainment.
 
OWN docu-series Released, following former inmates for the first 90 days after their release from prison, premieres Saturday, September 30 at 10p.
 
Universo Vice, produced by Vice Media, launches on Universo Sunday, August 20 at 8p. Ten-episode series is the first time Spanish-language audiences will have access to Vice content. “The program will be a window to the world with a different point of view, a more direct feel without judgment, and in Spanish,” said Bilai Joa Silar, SVP of programming and production.

Two-hour Oxygen special Snapped Notorious: Drew Peterson premieres Friday, August 25 at 9p on the rebranded-to-true-crime net. The show, featuring an interview with Peterson’s son, Stephen, marks the 10th anniversary since the disappearance of Peterson’s fourth wife, Stacy Peterson (and is not to be confused with ID’s Drew Peterson: An American Murder Mystery August 27).
 
Ready to have the time of your life? Freeform is celebrating the 30th (!) anniversary of Dirty Dancing with an all-day marathon on Monday, August 21, starting at 7a. The film is also available on the Freeform app and Freeform.com throughout August.
 
 
DIGITAL DATA
 
ABC and the Country Music Association are releasing 360 VR experiences for CMA Fest, including full performances from Dierks Bentley with Cole Swindell and Brett Eldredge on ABC Facebook and YouTube channels, and via Littlestar’s app for headsets and mobile devices. It’s ABC Entertainment Marketing’s third VR production, following 2 executions on Dancing With the Stars. CMA Fest airs Wednesday, August 16 at 8p.
 
Netflix also ordered an original young adult series from UK-based New Pictures. The untitled drama tells the story of teenage love, with a supernatural twist.
 
 
ADVERTISING
 
The benefits of less commercial TV clutter may not be apparent in the short term, suggests an article in the Wall Street Journal, which notes that Viacom attributed a 2% dip in domestic ad sales to a reduced ad loads at its networks. “The reality is the reduced commercialization has not translated to incremental rating points,” Gibbs Haljun, a managing director of GroupM, told the WSJ. But its not just about ratings – “ad effectiveness is true value,” said Donna Speciale, president of Turner ad sales (who did comment on revenue impact). Turner research showed lifts in brand awareness of 30% and 39% at truTV and TNT following cuts in commercial time.

Connie Britton (Nashville) will appear in a multi-episode guest arc and Miguel Gomez (The Strain) landed a series regular role on upcoming Showtime comedy SMILF, premiering Sunday, November 5 at 10p. Recurring on the series will be Raven Goodwin (Being Mary Jane) and Mark Webber (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World).
 
Michael Douglas will play an actor-turned-teacher with Alan Arkin as his longtime agent in Netflix comedy, The Kominsky Method, from Chuck Lorre.
 
Blythe Danner has joined the cast of Showtime’s 5-part limited series Patrick Melrose, starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
 
Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) will star in a dramedy in development at Bravo, Suburbs Famous (wt), about a suburban housewife who gains fame in a viral video.
 
Despite the fact that his character’s neck was snapped during season one of Netflix superhero series Jessica Jones, David Tennant will recur on season 2. No details on how that’s gonna work.
 
Barbara Hershey (Damien) will recur on Fox’s revived The X-Files, reports Deadline. Hershey will play a powerful figure representing a mysterious organization.

Fox reports Sunday’s Teen Choice Awards delivered 1.9 million total viewers, up 12% from last year, and a .6/2 rating among A18-49, up 20%. Among A18-34, the show was even with .4/2 in early numbers and ranked #1 for the night in Teens (1.5/11).
 
Bravo’s season 9 finale of The Real Housewives of New York City delivered a season high among all key demos, with 1.4 million P18-49 (up +14% versus the prior week’s episode), 1.7 million P25-54 (up +12%), and 2.7 million total viewers (up +6%) in Live+3 Nielsens.
 
USA’s The Sinner grew in its second week in A18-49 (+7% to 1.4 million), A25-54 (+5% to 1.6 million) and A18-34 (+4% to 543,000). Over its first two episodes, the series is averaging 3.5 million P2+ in Live+3.
 
Part 1 of History’s 3-night The Cars That Made America delivered 1.6 million total viewers on Sunday, growing 35% from its first to last half hour and becoming the network’s second most-watched special telecast of 2017 to date in total viewers. Counting Cars, which followed, drew 1.2 million total viewers, up nine percent versus its last premiere.

Kevin Smith was appointed Senior Vice President Business Development & Partnerships for Dick Clark Productions. Most recently, Smith was SVP at Comcast Media 360.
 
Entertainment Studios hired Eric Gould as Executive Vice President of Finance and Chief Investment Officer. Gould comes to Entertainment Studios from Guggenheim, where was a Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager.
 
Hit+Run promoted Noah Korn to Vice President of Development. Korn was previously Director of Development at ITV Studios America.
 
Deluxe Entertainment appointed Walter Schonfeld as President of Deluxe Distribution. Schonfeld, who joined the company in 2016, had been President of Digital Cinema Global Operations.
 
Sling TV founding CEO Roger Lynch is leaving the Dish Network company to join music streaming company Pandora as CEO and President, effective September 18. To fill the hole at Sling TV, Dish Presdent Erik Carlson will start overseeing the OTT service.

Actor/director/writer Joe Bologna died after battling pancreatic cancer. He was 82. Among the television writing credits for Bologna and his wife of 52 years, Renee Taylor, were TV series Calucci’s Department and American Dream Machine, and specials Acts of Love and Other Comedies and Bedrooms.
