Hillary Clinton will make her first late night appearance since accepting the Democratic nomination for president on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, August 22. The former Secretary of State last visited Kimmel in March.
Criminal Minds star Thomas Gibson has been suspended for at least one episode, after a physical altercation with a writer-producer on the set of the CBS drama, according to Deadline. In a statement to the website, Gibson said: “There were creative differences on the set and a disagreement. I regret that it occurred. We all want to work together as a team to make the best show possible. We always have and we always will.”
IFC has partnered with Rotten Tomatoes to air the worst of the worst on “Rotten Fridays.” Namely, movies that are so bad, they’re good. Stunt starts Friday, August 12 at 8p, with a double feature of The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear, followed by Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult. Additional flicks include: Austin Powers in Goldmember and Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.
Alix Steel has been named co-host of Bloomberg Television’s GO, joining David Westin and Jonathan Ferro daily from 7a to 10a. “Alix has the global markets and commodities experience to enhance our coverage for a global audience,” said Al Mayers, Head of Bloomberg TV and Radio. “Global expansion has been a strong focus for Bloomberg Television throughout the past year, and this move will benefit viewers around the world, whether they watch it live or digitally.”
The MTV Video Music Awards will bestow Rihanna with its highest honor, the “Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award,” for her decade-long impact on music, pop culture, fashion, film and philanthropy. The singer will perform during the ceremony live from Madison Square Garden on Sunday, August 28 at 9p.
Barbara Niven, one of the stars of Hallmark Channel new drama series Chesapeake Shores, will be honored with the Legends Award at the Peachtree Village International Film Festival on Saturday, August 13 in Atlanta, GA. Niven has served on the National Board of Directors for the Screen Actors Guild and appeared in over 100 film and television roles as well as more than 2500 television and radio commercials.

TBS is injecting a little groove into its original series lineup. The net has ordered Drop the Mic from producers James Corden and Ben Winston. The concept, which is already a huge viral and digital success as an ongoing segment on Late Late Show with James Corden, pits four celebrities against each other in a rap battle royale. Show is slated to join the TBS lineup in 2017.
Batman vs. Robin writer Grant Morrison and Crank’s Brian Taylor are adapting Aldous Huxley novel Brave New World for Syfy, Universal Cable Productions and Amblin TV. The 1931 novel looks 632 years into the future.
Universal Cable Productions is also developing Happy! for Syfy. An adaptation of a graphic novel originally written by Grant Morrison and co-created with artist Darick Robertson, the black comedy features a corrupt, intoxicated, ex-cop-turned-hit man.
Showtime issued a pilot order to SMILF. The comedy is based on the Frankie Shaw project that won the Short Film Jury Award at Sundance last year. Shaw is writing, directing, producing and starring in the semi-autobiographical series.
FYI greenlit Downtown Shabby from 3 Ball Entertainment. Series focuses on older homes that look perfect on the outside, but are practically unlivable on the inside. Production has begun on eight one-hour episodes to bow fall 2016.
HGTV has ordered a sophomore season of My Lottery Dream Home, after the show garnered 13 million viewers during its inaugural run. Premieres January 2017.
The final season of The Vampire Diaries may include the series’ original lead actress Nina Dobrev. At the TCA on Thursday The CW president Mark Pedowitz said there “are discussions” about Dobrev appearing on the upcoming eighth and final season of the supernatural series. “We would love to have her. She was great and integral to the show’s success.”
The CW’s Supergirl and The Flash are teaming up for a musical crossover, confirmed EP Greg Berlanti. The two-part episode will air during the second half of the 2016-2017 season and mostly feature characters singing preexisting tunes, although there’s been talk of writing “at least one original song per episode,” said Berlanti. The musical event is in addition to a four-way crossover airing late this fall across all four of the net’s superhero shows.
Supernatural lives on… and on. Pedowitz said he’s “thrilled with the creative direction” of the drama, which debuts its 12th season this fall. “If the ratings hold, the show could outlast my tenure in this chair [as network head].” Guest stars this season include Rick Springfield as Lucifer’s new vessel and Samantha Smith as Dean and Sam’s mom.
CW Seed, The CW’s digital channel, is debuting new animated series Freedom Fighters: The Ray in 2017. Based on the characters from DC and produced by Warner Bros’ digital studio Blue Ribbon Content, the series will introduce the first gay superhero to lead a show. Also on being planted: To celebrate September’s tenth anniversary of The CW, the Seed is adding comedies Girlfriends, The Game and Everybody Hates Chris.
Will Late Show’s Stephen Colbert host a live election special on Showtime? Net president and CEO David Nevins hopes so. Calling his news a “half-announcement” since a deal hasn’t been finalized, Nevins said, “Stephen wants to do it, I want to do it, the studio wants to do it…mIt’ll be Colbert unfettered, he’s promised to say at least a couple curse words.” Showtime, of course, is owned by CBS Corp.
Recently axed Saturday Night Live vets Jay Pharoah and Taran Killam have found a new home at Showtime. Both were announced as stars of new comedy pilots. Pharoah joins Jamie Foxx’s White Famous, while Killam heads to the Jason Katims-produced Mating, which has been officially picked up.
Showtime’s Ray Donovan has been renewed for a fifth season. The Hollywood fixer drama, starring Liev Schreiber, will begin production on 12 new episodes, next year.
Premiere dates were announced for two Showtime series. Homeland season 6 will bow Sunday, January 15 at 9p, while season 2 of Billions debuts Sunday, February 19 at 10p. Both series are currently shooting in New York. In addition, Homeland was renewed for a seventh and eighth season.
In other premiere news, One & Done is set for Friday, October 21 at 9p. The feature length documentary spotlights Ben Simmons, the number one 2016 NBA draft pick
The first season of Netflix’s Narcos premieres on Univision on Monday, August 22 at 10p. The series chronicles the real-life stories of the growth of cocaine drug cartels of the late 1980s.
NOVA: Great Human Odyssey premieres Wednesday, October 5 at 9p on PBS (check local listings). The film takes viewers on a global journey through the past, following a trail of fresh scientific clues to help unravel the mystery of how we got where we are.
The next 10 years look upbeat for the U.S. cable industry, according to SNL Kagan. Data indicates that the industry’s broadband advantage and bundling stance will enhance revenues from 2016 to 2026. The revised cable forecast incorporates a slightly improved outlook for the video segment and continued upside for the broadband services, which will translate into revenue growth. Residential revenues are projected to increase from $108.38 billion in 2016 to $117.7 billion in 2026, or $9.32 billion over the 10-year interval. Contributions from commercial services will help push total industry revenue from $130.57 billion in 2016 to $140.99 billion in 2016, or $10.42 billion over the 10-year period.
Real estate agents Lindsey and Eric Bennett take on handyman specials in Palm Springs, CA, while dealing with three young kids and triple-digit heat, in HGTV’s upcoming Desert Flippers. Home renovation series premieres Thursday, August 25 at 11p.
Eight top celebrity chefs battle it out in a five-week competition on Guy’s Superstar Grocery Games, bowing Sunday, August 28 at 8p on Food Network.
TLC’s 90 Day Fiance is back for another season on Sunday, September 11 at 9p. Docu-series follows American-born suitors and their foreign lovers, who have 90 days to meet the family, book a venue and say their vows to live happily ever after…or not. New spinoff series 90 Day Fiance: Happily Ever After? airs immediately following at 10p. A special premiere of 90 Days Fiance airs Monday, August 22 at 8p.
Syndicated Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford heads into its 19th broadcast season in a best-ever 206 television markets covering 89 percent of the country.
Courtney B. Vance and Leslie Uggams landed roles in HBO Films’ The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Others joining the cast include Reg E. Cathey, Reed Birney, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, John Douglas Thompson, Adriane Lenox and Roger Robinson.
Mena Suvari has been tapped to star in TV Land comedy pilot American Woman opposite Aliciia Silverstone..
Rocky IV vet Dolph Lundgren booked a recurring role on Season 5 of Arrow. He’s set to play Big Bad on The CW series, returning Monday, October 5.
Grey Damon (Aquarius) had nabbed the role of DC villain Mirror Master in The Flash. He’ll appear in an early Season 3 episode. The CW series is back Tuesday, October 4 at 8p.
Cinemax exorcism drama Outcast has added to its Season 2 cast. M.C. Gainey (Django Unchained) joins as a hermit who operates the junkyard on the edge of Rome. Madelyn Deutch (Texas Rising) plays a free spirit who embraces an unconventional form of Christianity and Hoon Lee (Banshee), and Hoon Lee portrays the chief of staff and a surgeon at Rome’s hospital.
Disney Channel ordered a second season of Elena of Avalor, the animated series that premiered in July that’s a spinoff of Sofia the First.
Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood debuts a week of new episodes on PBS Kids on Monday, September 5 focused on school readiness. The show helps preschoolers learn appropriate social skills through imagination, creativity, and music.
Nickelodeon is bringing back Rocko’s Modern Life for a new, one-hour TV special based on the classic ‘90s animated series. With Rocko’s original creator Joe Murray on board as EP, the special will feature the show’s classic characters and offer new takes on life in O-Town.
Endemol Shine International has secured a first-look distribution deal for scripted television production with Strong Films, the production company formed by director James Strong.
A+E Networks UK has announced the return of Britain’s Next Top Model on Lifetime. The new ten-part series will again be produced by Thumbs Up Productions, which licenses the format from CBS Studios International.
The Hef is coming to Amazon. The Prime Video service has ordered 13-episode American Playboy: The Hugh Hefner Story. Series will draw from over 17,000 hours of footage and 2,600-plus scrapbooks from Hefner’s personal archives and examine his life and the brand he created. Series is set to premiere next year in the U.S.
In more Amazon news, the service has acquired Cry Now, a An ode to the Los Angeles street art scene, from Princ Films. The project stars Miguel Angel Caballero as Vincent, a street poster artist, who falls head over heels for Luzy (Illiana Carter), a tattoo designer he meets at a backstreet boogey.
Turner has made an equity investment in Refinery29, the digital media company focused on women. The two companies will collaborate on content creation and development and work together on cross-platform ad sales partnerships. Christina Miller, President and General Manager of Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang, will take a seat on Refinery29’s board of directors.
Disney spokesman Paul Melvin clarified his company’s announcement of its upcoming ESPN-branded digital platform. “Our linear ESPN networks content will NOT be part of the service,” noted Melvin. “We see it as a complementary service to WatchESPN. We are not selling our ESPN Networks a la carte as part of the new service. The new platform will, however, be available direct-to-consumer, without a pay-TV subscription.”

Starz original series Power is off to a record-setting start four weeks into its third season, claiming the top viewed premiere telecasts on premium cable over its first four weeks (P2+ Live +SD). Series was also the number one viewed weekend program among A18-49 on all of cable, including basic, premium, scripted, non-scripted, sports and news, three out of four weeks.
OWN summer drama Greenleaf delivered its most watched Wednesday telecast on August 10 with 2.3 million viewers and 1.79 among W25-54, up 13 percent in the demo and 18 percent in total viewers versus the prior six-week average.
