PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
ITV-owned Talpa Media USA has entered into a production partnership with ITV America under which Talpa’s North American shows will be produced through ITV America’s infrastructure. (The Voice, however, will continue to be produced by Talpa, MGM Productions and Warner Horizon.) The partnership will allow Talpa to tap into ITV America’s extensive resources. Stijn Bakkers (The Voice) and Tim van Rongen (The Voice UK) are joining Talpa Media USA as co-CEOs.
CBS put in development a nuclear submarine drama, Trident, from writer David Wilcox and Secret Hideout (Star Trek: Discovery).
The Ballad of Buster Scraggs, a western anthology from the Coen Brothers, will debut on Netflix in 2016. Produced by Annapurna Television, each of six chapters will tell a different story about the American West.
Acorn TV has joined season 3 of UK comedy Detectorists as North American co-producer, partnering with DRG, Channel X North, Lola Entertainment and Treasure Trove.
Queen (wt), a dramedy series project from RuPaul and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is in development at Hulu. Story is a fictionalized account of RuPaul’s rise from club kid to global star.
ADVERTISING
The Association of National Advertisers released a report on commercial production practices that said some agencies use “non-transparent” production practices, like bid rigging, in which post-production companies are “urged to inflate the price they would otherwise quote on a bid,” enabling the agency producer to undercut it and land the project. The practice is leading to “costly, inefficient and suboptimal advertiser business decisions,” said the report.
VIP Petcare returns as a national sponsor of the NBC and Telemundo owned stations’ annual “Clear the Shelters” nationwide pet adoption campaign. VIP Petcare will donate preventive veterinary services to adopters.
TALK AT TCA
Will Mayans, the Sons of Anarchy spin-off that’s gone through a reshoot and recasting, make it to series? Reporters at the Television Critics Association summer tour had to be optimistic after seeing footage from the pilot in a promo for upcoming service FX+. “It’s a good sign,” acknowledged FX CEO John Landgraf. “I’m really excited where we are in the process on Mayans. I’m very confident about the future of the spin-off.”
As for a fourth season of Fargo, that’s all up to creator Noah Hawley, currently working on season 2 of FX’s Legion. “We’ve encouraged Noah to think about it and make sure he has something that he’s really excited about and believes in,” said Landgraf, “so there’s at least some possibility that he won’t have that idea for some period of time. I think there’s also a decent possibility, because Noah’s been insanely fertile and productive, that we’ll hear that idea fairly soon.”
Landgraf offered this year’s count of the number of scripted series airing in the U.S. year to date, and so far in 2017, it’s 342. That’s compared to 325 last year, with the biggest bump coming from streaming services – 62 this year versus 51 in 2016.
Confronting “the elephant in the room at TCA – the massive transformations” the TV business is undergoing with the invasion Internet services, Landgraf likened heads of traditional networks to chess master Gary Kasparov battling supercomputer Deep Blue. “I want humans to win against the machines,” said the exec.
FX’s Snowfall landed an early renewal for a second season, set to launch in 2018. While the season one set-up required “table setting” of storylines that takes time, said co-creator Dave Andron, “We would certainly like to hit season 2 very much with the ground running.” The crack epidemic drama is averaging 5 million total viewers across platforms.
Zosia Mamet (Girls) and Lou Diamond Phillips (Longmire) will guest star on season 4 of FXX’s You’re the Worst, returning with a one-hour premiere Wednesday, September 6 at 10p.
COMING UP
Can’t have too much of a good thing – HGTV has officially added a second night of weekend fantasy programming. Sunday’s primetime lineup has helped HGTV maintain a top #3 ranking among cable networks on the night.

AHC special Oklahoma Bombing: As We Watched premieres Sunday, August 13 at 10p, with news footage of the days and weeks following the April, 1995 bombing that left 168 people dead.
CASTING
Aaron Eckhart (Sully) has been added to the cast of Amazon anthology The Romanoffs…. Jackie Goldston (Shots Fired) landed a co-star role in Fox drama The Passage….James Carpinello gets a bump from guest star to recurring when NBC’s The Blacklist returns for season 5….Ruffin Prentiss (Elementary) will recur on season 2 of E!’s The Arrangement.
VIDEOS IN SHORT
Urban Movie Channel is collaborating with Jay Ellis (Insecure) on Hard Medicine, a workplace comedy series of 10-12 minute episodes centered on a quirky doctor in a low-income health clinic. Show premieres on UMC on August 16; first 2 episodes launched on Ellis’ Facebook page.
GOING GLOBAL
Toronto-based LaRue Entertainment struck a distribution deal with Vivendi Group’s recently launched SVoD app Studio+ for dark political/crime comedy Filth City. The 12-part digital series has been available for streaming exclusively on Studio+ in France, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Ecuador, with more to come.
DIGITAL DATA
So long, Seeso. The comedy streaming service from NBCUniversal Digital Enterprises, launched in January 2016, is shuttering. “Though we will be departing, much our comedy will live on – and some of your favorite Seeso Originals have already found new homes,” said a statement on Facebook. HarmonQuest; My Brother, My Brother and Me; Hidden America with Jonah Ray and The Cyanide and Happiness Show have moved to streamer VRV. Paul Reiser’s There’s…Johnny! won’t premiere this month as planned, said Seeso, but “we love this show and can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
Complex Networks fishing docu-series Breaking Bass premieres August 15 on go90. First lines drop in Nashville.
